I juar bought a new Intel Dual Core 2 E7400 Processor. The box says it has Intel 64 Architecture for 64-bit computing.
Will this run Windows XP Professional?

Yes. In fact unless you install a 64-bit OS it will ONLY operate in 32-bit! (which means you'll totally waste the potential of your CPU)

Maybe later I will purchase another operating system. I am downloading this one right now.
I am just trying to make certain I have enough for the next 8-10 years which is how long I usually keep my computers before they won't run much of anything.

I've heard that the 64 bit version of XP pro works. But I have had the opposite experience. It was a mess trying to get anything to work (iTunes was pretty much impossible).
Vista 64, however, I have had 0 problems with

Ditto. MSN wouldn't work at all. IE would freeze on loading, and the same with Firefox. There were loads of other compatibility issues, so I just ended up using XP Home 32bit again.

I ended up installing a copy of VISTA Premium 32 bit I had laying around. I had purchased it for another computer that was too old and it wouldn't install on that one.
Now I finally made my home network operational so we have Internet on both computers.(It helps to read the instruction manual.)
I was up until 3:30 setting things up and back up again this morning at 7AM.
Now I am downloading programs and resetting my Favorites files.
