I currently have a Pentium D 950 (2 x 3.4 GHz) dual core processor running idle at 71 degrees C, and 78 on load. It seems to be running oddly slow with the current temps. Do you think a new heatsink & fan would improve performance (I'm currently using the stock HSF)? The processor and thermal compound are brand new, so age isn't a factor. So, would getting a new HSF improve performance?

NOTE: Recommendations for good LGA 775 heatsinks are welcome.

Yes, High temperatures can actually make it run slower even if its at 3.4 ghz, that has to be overclocked right? maybe you should take it back to a lower setting like 3.0ghz until you get your heatsink.

Yeah, most modern Intel processors simply slow down their processing when they reach their temperature limits, instead of exploding or physically breaking. So yeah, if it isn't sufficiently cooled, it will run slower than expected.

These are two top of the line coolers, I'm not sure if that's what you wanted. One thing you should definitely do is measure the amount of space you have for a CPU cooler in your case, then check the manufacturer pages for the dimensions, because these two are huge.

Actually, I haven't overclocked the CPU yet because of the heat problem. It runs stock at 3.4 GHz. I do plan on overclocking it when I get a new heatsink.

A friend has a 3.6 GHz Pentium D with the stock heatsink, and it ran at 84°C for 14 seconds before shutting off. He bought a flimsy $15 heatsink, and it brought the temperature down to 42°C idle, and 48° load. At this point, I'd be happy with 50°C, because my P4 ran at 3.0 GHz @ 54°C just fine. Here's the heatsink.

Like I said, as long as I can get a good 50° I'm fine.

Stay away from water cooling, if you get a leak everything will be ruined.
What is your case like?

Well, it has excellent ventilation, fans in the front, back, and side panel. But the CPU heatsink & fan sucks, well technically, it doesn't. It doesn't get the job done. The motherboard is a Micro ATX, but I'm sure I can fit a decent sized heatsink on it. Even with good ventilation, it seems I need a good heatsink and fan.

I searched online, and there's an apparent severe heat problem with Pentium Ds which contributes to the lack of performance. Apparently, the problem was never fixed by Intel because the D was being replaced with the Pentium Dual Core.
