EDIT: Pioneering: Explore the Early American West is out now, if you wanna have a look you can download the demo here or visit the website here

Hi all

This is the work in progress thread for my entry into the Fight for Indepence Contest. My game is called Pioneering, and is set during the American Revolution, on the frontier territories of the time. The game is (more or less) a single level, but that level is huuuge! Anyways, I won't talk about the specific gameplay as I've not yet implemented my ideas - but it will be something kind of different. If you saw the WIP for my other game (a seperate project called Daniel Boone and the Hunters of Kentucky) you'll have a rought idea of what I am going for but I have some tricks up my sleeve for this release. I even figured out how to implement a door that requires a switch (as per contest rules) in the 1700s

Anyways, the game mainly concerns the Indian war that took place on the frontier during the revolution, so settler-Native American relations and enmity will be at the centre of the game. Here are some screen shots:

The framerate is currently sitting at around 30-38fps although in these pictures it is lower - it seems that my game takes alot of processing power so taking screenshots gives a lower FPS readout than normal, although the framerate is something I am trying to make more consistent

Also, the gun in these images was created by EAI, and is an authentic Kentucky/Pensylvania rifle from the period (thanks )

Any feedback would be appreciated

I believe the contest thread specifically says you can't post your game outside the thread itself, otherwise it won't get submitted as an entry.
The game looks and sounds very good though! I'd love to see more

-Cheers

Ich will in Beifall untergehen.

I did not realise that - was trying not to spam the contest thread. Mods, can you lock this for me?

You got EAI to make a custom weapon? Nice...looks pretty good, can't wait to judge it!

Look for me on CoD4 online for PC. My username's Arbiquator (strange I know but it's the first thing that came to mind)

Looks great chidem! I'm also making my entry set during the American Revolution and I've been making custom weapons, characters and entities as well. Good luck.

[rant]Ridiculous. Seasoned contest promoters should know that just getting people to participate, in earnest is 95% of the challenge. Seriously, contest promoters should be giving points just for creating/maintaining a WIP thread. [/rant]

EDIT! I just read the compo guidelines and there is nothing prohibiting a WIP thread or linking to it to show off progress. You simply can not submit the entry outside of the official thread (which actually makes sense). If am wrong, see above... LOL

Looks like a good start, Chidem! I'd reccomend using a more pleasing light color. Something more orange-hued. That greenish yellow is not easy on the eyes.

Oh, I'll be sending you an email shortly. Had to get some things sorted but I'd love to get a copy of your book!

Thanks Errant . I've just read the original post again and noticed you made that musket/rifle (did that weapon have rifling?) It's nice to see you making some classic weapon models. What else have you got in the works? Anyway, sorry for almost hi-jacking your thread chidem.

I am so thrilled you are taking upon the challenge of making a game in a time period that hasn't been used frequently. The American Revolution and the French and Indian War, are great time periods to be used for a good FPS Game. What I love most, however, is that you have researched the gun used during the era. When I am making a game, my research tends to take much longer than the making of the game itself, so I applaud you for conducting the proper research.

I hope/think you're right - doesn't make sense banning WIP threads for entries!

I'll give that a try when I get a chance - at the moment pulling my hair out as Conjured's cash system doesn't work with S4 mod - and when I removed the mod the entire graphical look of the game altered - very odd (and annoying)!

@ Opposing Force - Awesome - can't wait to play your entry!

@ Keith C and Dark Peanut - Thanks for that, will try no to disappoint

Did EAI make the entire model? Rifle, sleeve etc

And how much did you pay for it? (If you dont mind saying)

Cos that is some quality right there, but paying as much as modellers like EAI ask for in times like these seems absurd for a one-off contest entry which you may not even win..

I recognise the rifle from one of EAI's old WIP threads.. There's still a lot of epic stuff on that 2008 page that he's yet to release

I am deeply impressed that someone takes the challenge to try such a different setting

May I ask if you made the torch holders yourself? I have a lot of fantasy packs (MPs/store and free stuff alike) but I never saw these before!

Cant wait to try your game out!

Yep. I did all that. It was testbed for my v2.0 arm rig system. New hands, rigging, etc. Chidem was VERY patient waitng for delivery as it was a backburner project. His previous game project was a companion to a book he was writing and I wanted to help out because at the time he only had Bond's bow and arrow which really wasn't a good fit and so I felt compelled to help. As such, there was really no charge. He got the media for a song... or more to to the point- fr a book. One I'm going to ask him to mail to Bangkok for me since there's no chance I'll find it in stores here

Quote: "May I ask if you made the torch holders yourself? "
Sorry, I missed this last time. No, I didn't make them - the torches came with Benjamin's fantasy/medival pack which was released ages ago. If memory serves he got some hassle on these boards (I don't know that the story was - nor does it matter) and has since removed the pack from his site - but it was great - the fort, for instance, is built using his pack, and most of the internal furnishings were created by him. Not only that, but the pack was a bargain price if I remember.

And also, I should have mentioned that the wigwams were created by SamHH who did an incredible job!

Hey there chidem, I had the same problem with S4mod and Conjured's script and I don't think it's possible for it to work. All the older mods were for the 1.07 source and the 1.07 didn't contain variable support. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. As always someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I figured that must be it so I uninstalled the mod. I've had to tigthen up the level design a bit but I've got the framerate running OK, if not 100%

Ok, time for an update! I've been working on this game quite alot, trying to create a large outdoor environment that runs at a steady framerate and it looks like I've finally cracked it. Running without the S4mod it currently averages around 30fps and is almost completely set out doors with quite a few large set pieces.

As for the actual game I've tried to create an RPG as opposed to an FPS. The game is somewhat inspired by certain aspects of Fable II, Fallout 3 and GTA IV. Set on the frontier during the American Revolution players take on the role of a pioneer on a recently settled area. The player's ultimate goal is to become a successful land owner by purchasing houses and other forms of property. This is accomplished by exploring the open world environment, hunting wild hogs for money and completing a handfull of other missions. As you play you will be rewarded money for killing wild hogs but the wilderness is filled with Indians allied with the British - if you look at the screenshots below you might notice that next to "Cash" in the HUD is another variable "Conscience". Everytime you take a life your conscience level will drop - conscience can be restored by seeking out "Public Notice" signs which give the player a short historical fact or some context. These signs, however, are quite rare and the opportunities to be drawn into battle many.

The reason that conscience is important is that one of the game's goals is marriage. A potential bride will only accept a suitor of high moral standing. So far there is only one potential bride in the game but I may add another one or two for some variety. Everytime you buy property, marry, or complete a mission for an Indian you will also accomplish a "life goal". Only once you gained enough life goals will the game be complete.

The game world is an open world environment - or at least the best I could do on a single level. I love games like Fable II, Fallout 3 and GTA IV but let me emphasise that I am not comparing this entry to any other those!!

Anways, here are some fresh screenies:

Wow, this seems to be very in depth and you've put alot of work into it, this should definitely win the compo...

If I was ever given the opportunity to remove all the bad from the world, I wouldn't, because for there to be heroism, compassion and all that is good, there must also be all that is bad.

Oh, I forgot to mention that each property you buy contains a unique bonus. Most of the cabins will produce a rental income (which periodically regenerates), one regenerates health, whilst the church increases the player's conscience level. Phew, think that's everything!

Can I just ask how you did it?

There must've been a lot of scripting done to achieve that. I'm also thinking of how you did the quest options, with variables right?

Well, I've tried to give it some depth but the tough part is making the 40x40 grid seem alot bigger than it is. Hopefully I've given it a fairly good try though

Ironically I have virtually no scripting ability. Most of the quests, etc, use variables, yes, but also alot of smoke and mirrors to get the desired effect. By far the most important script i'm employing is Conjured Entertainment's Cash System which I've adapted to suit my own purposes. Hope that helps.

When they release the source code for the Map, then I'm sure some modders will make it so you can have bigger maps, because really, 40x40 is nothing.

same here, i used conjured's cash system in my zombie survival game.
you should make a competition to see who can find + post screenshots of all the portraits in the level first.
that would be fun...

As I stated in the FFIC thread, WIP threads are fine. It's just the entry has to be posted in the FFIC thread. I apologize if I didn't make that clear.

This is a good game, but still needs work in some areas.
I played it last night for quite sometime and I have some things that I noticed maybe you would like to hear about.

1) your prayer skeleton has no alt texture when your press enter, it just turns white

2) after playing for awhile after killing the wild hogs just once they seem to just stick around and didn't reward me until a few mins later when I entered the fort

3) I think the cabins that have a bed, it would be nice to say be able to go to sleep to heal up

4) a faster reload time, I happen to have an old pen rifle and it reloads faster than what you are giving(maybe if you were an old man it take that long) you can see from other games like the "Civil War" or "Gun" they sped up the reload time to make for better gameplay

5) more direction in game, if you want to kill indians then great, but don't send the plr into their camp whithout a reason(or maybe I missed your reason)

6) missions started out great, but I never recieved that I had actually completed the mission like " Thanks for clearing a path for me." or " Thanks for bringing back my medicine bags." Give the plr a sense of accomplishment

7) background music there is none, maybe some crickets, wolves howling, something to make an atmosphere seem more alive, more Pioneer

8) now for your praise. I really enjoyed playing this game, so Please keep up the good work. These are some things that I thought you might like to know. I also wish to tell you that another weapon would be nice like a tomahawk, sam colt, bow, etc. I realize that these things take time to do and I praise you for the work that you have done and I encourage you to do more. I think that all will agree that this is a great game to be completed. In the words of Tanya "Great Job and Keep up the Great Work!"

Hi all

Been a while since I updated this - I've been creating a new commercial version of Pioneering and I am now almost finished. The idea for the final game is to make an episodic release with each download giving roughly 2-4 hours of gameplay - episode one (Pioneering: Explore the Early American West) will feature the original Fight for Indepence entry as it's main content but I've been working to fix all the bugs and criticisms given from all of you. For instance, the bug that stopped pigs dying and awarding money has been fixed, the game has a comletely new soundtrack, difficulty has been adjusted and main story/quest has been added. The original introduction level has been greatly extended to include a town as well as introducing a main quest (search for the missing daughter of a former frontier settler). I've also added a new level set in an underground mine and optimized the main open world environment. I've also decided to employ a mod to make the game run better - I've settled on the horror mod. Here are some screenshots from the mine level:

I'll hopefully add a few more later

Commercial eh? From the sounds of everything, it should be a fun game Looks very good! How much do you think you'll be charging each episode?

In any case, can't wait to see more of what you can come up with

Thanks Ekipshi

I won't be charging much I am thinking £5 or $7 though I've not given it enough thought yet. The idea I have behind my product release strategy is to release the title as if it were DLC (for a game that doesn't exist) - small cost, limited but focused gameplay chunks that add up collectively to a large game. I am thinking about three episodes, each brining 2-4 hours of gameplay adding up to a total 6-12 hours at a total cost less around $20. But I gotta get the game finished first though I'm about 1 day away from that now...though I reckon I'll add in some content from Cosmic Prophet's new pack first. If you like you could beta test the final build for me?

Yea sure, I'd do that, me and my friend always find bugs in even big company games, so be ready

7$, not a bad price at all, doin sort of the style of Half-Life 2 releasing the game in smaller less expensive parts?
