Get one with Windows 7. Never freezes, blinks, bleeps, etc. Also, for fast gaming have >2GB RAM with an Nvidia graphics card (dont get a budget one though).

My specs are,

AMD Anthlon x64 X2 4000+ (2.6GHz Dual Core)
3GB DDR2 RAM (800MHz)
Nvidia Geforce 9600 GS 768MB

Runs all games on very high. (Except for crysis which runs at about 12 FPS on very high).

Here's mine (in sig), runs all games on high quality with no lag.

Edit: forgot to mention that the graphics card is 1GB.

I'm looking to build a new high-end workstation soon and I've been really interested about the new stuff coming out in the fall. The new Intel "Lynnfield" core is confusing though. Is it going to be better than the Core i7 or what? People don't even know what to categorize it as. Is it a core i5 or i7?

Some Lynnfield mobo's will have Sata 3 and USB 3 support though... so I'm sorta wondering if I should hold off until the fall until building a new computer. Decisions decisions... Right now it's up in the air to whether an a good i7 or this Lynnfield processor will have better performance.

Yes, there are some computers out you can get Windows 7 for, it might be worthwhile looking into. I was just looking at Windows 7 pre-orders today.

I bought my laptop 1 year ago for £700:

2.0ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB DDR2
512mb nVidia 9500M GS
250gb HDD (partitioned)

I probably wouldn't recommend my exact laptop, though it has been good to me (despite having to get my keyboard fixed) I don't think it'll last as long as other computers I've used. (It's an Acer)

It can perform well at the spec. I can't wait until Windows 7 is released.

What's the best computer today? It's not the most expensive.

The best computer is an absolute bargain. Value for money, people. If you buy from the very top end, you're paying a lot more for what is usually not enough difference to matter too much.

Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz (E6750)
4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256MB
Abit IP35 Pro motherboard (P35/ICH9R)
SeaSonic 430w PSU
WD harddrives, several of them.
Samsung 20x DVD sata
Antec P180B case

About $1k in October '07. It runs cool and is extremely quiet. When I first booted it up, my only indication that it turned on was a light on the mobo. I couldn't hear a single system fan nor PSU, which was my intention when I built it.

So from this thread we can pretty much see that the best computer specs if you are considering upgrading your computer now are either the computer you actually own (and bought several years ago) or a netbook (cheap). Aha...

Cheers

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHZ (Will be overclocking back to 3.0GHZ when my new case gets here (Thermaltake V9 Black Edition). My comp overheated during the middle of the day because of the hot weather + overclocking)

4GB ddr2 1066mhz RAM

ASUS P5Q SE PLUS with PCIE 2.0

320GB SATA Drive

Geforce 9800 GTX+ Black Edition

This whole rig (not counting the new case), cost me about $530 - $550. Thanks NewEgg.

Don't think for a second though that just because these parts are so awesome I can run Crysis maxed. With overclocking the CPU to 3.0GHZ (not recommended for inexperienced users), the AA at 4x and the AF at 16x I can run it with the graphics about half the way up very smoothly at 1680x1050.
