People are struggling to get my programs with Winzip, and Winrar, plus they cost money. Is there another way for me to hand out my programs, but also to compress them, or make them fast to download.

Thanks!

Pincho.

Just link them to http://www.jzip.com/. Based on 7-Zip and its functionality, but better UI etc.

In terms of not distributing with ZIP files, there are tons of 'transparent' compression mechanisms: the problem is they're also widely used by viruses (UPX, for example) - so by avoiding ZIP etc. you're probably going to shoot yourself in the foot by triggering AV or suspicion.

Winrar is totally free.

I suppose you could use a self-extractor, making it so they only have to click one/two buttons to extract the files.

Winrar isn't free, the trial just never ends.

never got that...

Is it a flaw, or did the creators give up with it?

I know! Is that some stupid programming error? Although that dialog box that reminds me to buy it IS getting quite annoying after the years...

Hey, why complain when it works?
Anyway, zip archives are handled natively by Windows, aren't they??
(XP and Vista at least).

It doesn't do RAR. I don't understand why people bother to install WinZip, it's not much better than Windows' own solution.

Just use 7z, it's easy to use, lightweight and importantly has a wide range of compatible formats.

I think in some older version of WinRar once the 40 days were up you could still extract archives but it wouldn't let you create any. Now it does everything even after you time is up, you just get the nag screen.

I've had my copied registered for many years now. I like to support the people who make the software I use.

I also registered Winzip many, many, many years ago. At the time I registered I was told free upgrades for life. Then when version 10 came out they said you had to pay to get the upgrade. I haven't used it since. I don't mind paying again but don't sell something with a promise of free upgrades for life when you don't mean it.

In my opinion the best ZIP program is IZArc. It supports so many formats and is extremely fast. Oh yeah, its totally free as well!

Here's the link for the lazy ones,
http://www.izarc.org/

Supports: ZIP, RAR, 7-ZIP just to name a few (And probably the most popular).

Winrar, I'll have you know, is actually free! The trial is like mIRC's, it lasts forever!

No one knows just what has become of her, Shattered, dull, desperate, oh so innocent and delicate. But too damn obdurate, And obstinate to let go!
