I'm also not sure how it works, but I think there is some voting involved. TGC only ever makes you a moderator if they really need one or don't have enough. I could imagine Latch becoming one, since he is very knowledgeable about almost everything.

Moderators are quite old, I don't think any moderator is under the age of 30, although I could be wrong.

I remember it said somewhere in the AUP that asking the question you just asked is bad and that you will now never have the chance to be a mod, or something like that, couldn't find the section.

2. You've been an asset to the forums in the past
3. You haven't been here 5 minutes

... or (like me) you were a mod for TGC last century and were invited back after a few years break from modding!

the security and imformation on a board and about its users that a mod is entrusted with is a big responsibility and one disgrunteled mod could really mess that up so they have to know that they can trust you to respect the privacy of others as well

To decide who will be the next Mod, TGC have a list of all active forum members and when a member makes a thread in the wrong board asking about how to become a mod they get struck off the list.
The last member remaining becomes the new mod.

The ceremony to create a mod involves a strange ritual where they sacrifice a one day old noob and circle a fire chanting "Hello World!" in binary.
