Hey,,,

I know there has been an Ipod Touch programming thread, but not normal ipod(as far as I know - Sorry if there is).

Does anyone know if it is possible(preferably easy) to program for the iPod. I know it has to be possible for companys e.g saga but is it possible for a regular joe like me to? Im not worried about what language it is in really, I am competant with both C# and Basic and Im pretty certain I could learn it.

Thanks,,,

There's the iPod touch and iPhone: you need a Mac with the SDK on it (99 a year isn't it?), and you need to sign contracts and stuff. Once you get past all of that, you can program the iPod/phone in Objective-C (look it up)

The SDK is completely free. You only need to pay to submit an app to the store

I believe you only pay to submit apps if you're selling them. No charge for free apps.

Officially, no. Apple never released a public SDK to the classic-era iPods (they only released one to a select few developers, such as PopCap).

Absolutely no idea whether they can be unofficially made, but my bet is yes: I have an application on my 80GB iPod Classic called "Book2Pod" which lets me read big chunks of text. It's text based and simply uses underlined links, so I assume it's probably just exploiting some simple flaw in the notes functionality (I know the same can be done for images too) but I can't say for certain. You'll need to investigate

It depends: do you mean the officially labeled "iPod Classic," or the 5th generation iPods?

There's something called "iPod Linux" for 5th generation iPods and earlier. I've used it on mine before. The site disappeared for awhile, so I don't know if it's still around, but check it out with Google.

With iPod Linux, you can compile programs (it comes with the toolchain).

I've had a look at that, just a couple of days ago and tried to put it on my old ipod mini... didnt work. Im not sure why but I thought I would wait before the official ipodlinux site came up again (if it does).

Thanks,,,

It's pretty easy to do it incorrectly. I know it took me multiple tries (PROTIP: Linux *is* a necessity .

I downloaded it when the site was up. It's gone now, but sourceforge has some files left.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipodlinux/files/

However, that's entirely useless without the install guide. Unfortunately, I have no clue where to find it.

Try Google, though. I honestly don't have the time to find it myself, as this is the last day of summer for me, and I'm going to enjoy it.

Do you live in Europe, then? Or are you college?

Try Rockbox instead.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

I didn't think any schools in the US were that far apart for summer dates.

I live in the US, and school always starts the day after Labor Day (Which is the 7th of September this year I think).

Without the site up, you can't use the auto-installer (which rarely works, anyway; never did for me). Like I said: you'll have to find a copy of the instructions for manual-installation. I know, it sucks. :/

I've searched to find out why it is down and it looks like it has gone down a lot of times in the past. I'm not sure why though. Hopefully it will come back up soon

Thanks,,,
