Geek Culture / Wow... I've got some bad thoughts about "green" energy generation technology...

I was bored at work and my mind started wandering. I thought it'd be nice if I had a windmill and solar power installed onto my house, and hydrogen fuel cells to store that power for my personal use. Then I realized that someone could pass a law that would make me pay a monthly license fee for each power generation/storage device I owned for producing power for my house, and that I'd have to pay income tax for any power I sell to the grid. The reason? Electricity is dangerous, therefore only those people who know what they're doing should be able to operate the things. That means mandatory classes to get the certification needed to be able to have windmills, solar panels, etc... installed.

Thank goodness I'm not a politician or we'd stop moving in the "green" direction because of this horrible idea...

The way the green movement is moving now is quite distasteful anyway. I'm thinking of the focus on CO2 as a "pollutant". It's a greenhouse gas and the more the merrier. Plants grow more numerous and stronger with more CO2 in the air, it's what they breathe after all. There are currently ~390ppm CO2 in the atmosphere (that's 0.039%!), that's far from the 5000+ppm that the world seemed to enjoy just fine in pre-industrial times. There's bigger issues like the global sock shortage we'll be seeing soon as people continue throw away their socks that they can't find both of, only to later find the missing ones and throw those too as they aren't a pair anymore. Very concerning. Once the ice age comes we'll have nothing comfortable to wear on our feet, will you be ready?

I always thought that it would be cool to build a windmill and set it up for my house. Maybe one day when I have money.

When that day comes, the few people who stocked up on socks will be in complete control, like in Waterworld (actually I have never seen the movie but I assume it has socks in it).

Yes, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king (or in this case, the sock-horder). Don't say I didn't warn you. I'd like a windmill, too... And you should see that movie sometime.

Oh ok, but I don't want to cheat on Benjamin. You see, I'm Grandma, he's a cat. We are obviously meant for eachoter, whilst you are a constant stream of particles? Not my type actually. Edit: whoops, I looked at the wrong avatar. Apparently, you're a cat too, that complicates things...

Will I be ready? Well, um... er...

*quietly closes and locks his wool sock filled closet*

I guess this thought goes way back to my high school years. Back then I asked a local senator what would happen if everyone switched to solar power. His reply was that the government would find a way to make money from that. I guess that makes sense in a weird way; you'll still be paying your power bill even if you're the one producing that power. >_<

@ Grandma

Eh?
~390ppm now
5000+ppm then?

I thought the CO2 went up not down since pre-industrial times? (Seeing as it's CO2 that most industries pump out) Please explain.

It's been going up and down for a long time. Most graphs begin at the 1960's or later, obviously showing an increase. But look at a different time scale, a more geological-friendly timescale, and you'll see it has been declining for a long time. It seems to be at its lowest in known history.

This one is good, it's compiled from 5 different sources and even the oddball Rothman graph agrees that it has been far more CO2 before than we have now. If enormous CO2 levels were catastrophic in any way, we wouldn't be here now. Of course, too much of anything is bad, but CO2 has a good way to go before I get worried.

Edit: From your pic "The industrial revolution has caused a dramatic rise in CO2". That's nice theory, but it could also just have increased the way it has naturally increased/decreased troughout history.

i hope this doesn't become hijacked into a debate about the validity of the global warming theory i'd rather talk about socks.

have you ever thought about socks?

they're like little bags for your feet...!

Anyone here ever invested in electric socks? I hear they're quite toasty on cold days.

I dont see why solar panels are "green"

They create so much CO2 when their made, you have to use them for at least 10 years to make up for it.

Also, their visually, black.

A very environmentally friendly way on making energy is burning rubbish. If we dont burn it, it will go to landfill. Take ages to rot, when it does it creates methane which is a 5x as bad greenhouse gas as CO2.

If we burn it, we save land and create CO2 which is better than methane. We can also make electricity out of the heat.

We should kill my brother too, he creates alot of methane.

The solution is simple. Make thousands of huge transparent socks and put all the cows in them Cows are some of the biggest producers of methane! (No joke!)

Or we could just eat them all

I like that this discussion is now about socks, it's heartwarming to see the general public involved in things that really matters.
This is a good pair of socks, I always wear this pair.
