Hey! My 16th birthday is coming up pretty soon and I was thinking of getting Unity Indie. I love programming and everything that goes into game making but what I'm not sure about is if Unity is a good game engine. I mean the games made look great, and much better then what Dark GDK (what I'm using now) could make. But, what I'm worried about is 2 things. 1. It looks good but the frame rate is bad and 2. It's just not worth the $200. So what do you think, should I get Unity Indie or something else?

Some Ideas:
-A 2nd full HD computer monitor (I would plug my 360 into this)
-A new graphics card (My current one is a Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT and it's good but I could obviously use better).
-Unity 3D (Some showcased games made by this look pretty awesome but how hard is it?)

So what do you think, oh and if you think I should get a graphics card what's a good Nvidia one?

Figured someone was going to say that. But I got a few reasons not to get one.

1. I don't have the money
2. I don't want to own a car until I have my license (I'll learn on my parents)
3. My parents have an old dodge stratus that will be mine but the problem is, is that it will probably break soon.

And before anyone tells me to get a job, I don't want to get a job until I can drive on my own so I don't have to rely on my parents to get me to the job, and there are no places to work within walking distance of my house.

Try the Unity demo.

Otherwise I would ask for some yummy pie or maybe a pair of socks.

Irrlicht (free)
OGRE (free)
Crystal Space 3D (free)

Unless you meant 3D game engine, which you probably did. If so I would recommend BlitzMax--doesn't include a 3D engine, but there are several available for it for free. Plus it's multi-platform and far faster than DBP/DGDK, and it includes an OpenGL module to make your own 3D graphics if you wish.

Thanks for the info AndrewT! I do like the OGRE engine and it is kinda complicated but I think that will be good. Something for me to learn because right now I'm getting kinda bored because it's pretty easy to make a good looking game. As for the other 3 engines, I think Irrlicht is less powerful then OGRE if I remember correctly, and the Crystal Space 3D I just don't like it the media it has for example games aren't too impressive and considering those are suppose to showcase what it's capable of it doesn't seem too good. BlitzMax is a possibility, but I have used it and something about it I just don't like, I think it's the syntax and the language. So from those 4 I would have to go with OGRE because some of the games made with it are very impressive and it uses C++ which I love. So that could take care of a 3d engine. I'm looking at Unity 3d now and as cool as it is I don't think I want to speed $200 on something that produces the same thing as something else that's free (OGRE). And I know that I would have to make my own game engine if I use OGRE, but personally that's my favorite part of programming. So thanks for the links AndrewT, I really appreciate it!

Oh sorry I didn't mean modeling I meant either graphics engine or game engine, I'll edit the first post Thanks for the advice on Blender though!

Do you have any suggestions on which Nvidia graphics card? I have a pc store that will be ordering and putting the graphics card in, but I wanna go in there with a good idea on what to get.

Well here's the thing Dark Dragon, my parents can't really afford to get a new computer and since I already have one they wouldn't get one anyway. And I'm happy with the one I have it's just I can't play all the new games.

Lol, I'm looking at this:

What kind of performance improvements do you think I will have when I upgrade to that from a Nvidia GeForce 6800GT?

For starters, you can expect to run nearly every game that has come out on highest settings.

That is, only if you have high end parts everywhere else- CPU, Ram, etc, etc.

Ok, I don't have high end parts everywhere else but, at least I know I'll see improvement Right now I can only play crysis on medium settings so hopefully now I can play on high and actually enjoy it lo.

I have unity, And it seems to be decent. I have not played with it that much but runs really well. The interface is a bit confusing, And they could of done alot better with it. But all in all, It is all about performance witch it has.

Personally I'd choose the second monitor.

I've had two computer monitors for years now and I could never go back to just one.

Makes life so much easier for work. Also means if you doing your programming you can watch a video on one monitor and program on the other.

I have two 26" 1920x1200 monitors (one has a TV tuner built in), and its just computer heaven.

Thanks for the responses! I don't think I want to get Unity 3D now mostly for the reason that making a good looking game in Unity is much easier then in Dark GDK and therefore I would be less proud. But, now the question is, the graphics card or a 2nd monitor. The decision is this graphics card:

or this monitor:

If you don't have a graphics card that can pump out the max resolution that monitor takes, there is no point in getting the monitor. And on the video card... wait until DX11 cards come out in late October with the Win7 release.

EDIT: Ah, you said you'd plug your 360 into it... in the case, the monitor wouldn't be so bad of a choice then

Well my graphics card now can support up to 2048x1536 resolution and the monitor is 1920x1080 so the resolution isn't a problem. My only concern is that my computer will run slower if I hook up an additional monitor, so could this be a problem?

Also remember the higher the resolution you go, the greater the performance hit. Just because you'll be able to hit that resolution, doesn't mean you'll be able to play games maxed out.

The same goes for having an additional monitor. I go back to single display for gaming.
