Firstly, I can not even begin to stress how PHENOMENAL the movie was.

Watching it in theaters, I'd have to say, was better or just as good as watching The Dark Knight in IMAX.

I just got back from seeing it, and the expectations I held for it were no match for what I actually saw in the film.

It's a very different movie, but nonetheless it was fantastic. Well-paced, great plot, great directing, AMAZING character development, and overall exciting theme.

I hope you all find the opportunity to watch it.

This movie was brilliant. One of the best I've seen in a long time. I had no idea what the movie was actually about from watching the commercials, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The South African apartheid themes were really well done. The way the main character explained the details of the brutal murder of the alien eggs with such a cheerful tone sent a chill down my spine.

I'm glad it didn't go long like other Peter Jackson movies. But it was pretty good, very realistic and the CGI didn't affect that. I wish the main character was a little more interesting, and I felt like his personality was a little bland.

That being said, the sequel is probably

It looks amazing, I want to see it soon, and have heard excellent things about it. Peter Jackson did not direct it though, Neill Blomkamp, one of Peter Jackson's students, apparently, directed it, Jackson just produced it (ie: gave them the money for it).

Ya, I've wanted to see this since I saw a trailer on the web. I don't really watch TV, so I didn't even know it was coming out until about 2 weeks ago! I also want to see GI Joe, so I haven't decided which to watch at the theatre yet...

I saw it with my already ex girlfriend yesterday (lmao don't worry I'm not depressed about she was a freak but a really hot one actually) but I don't know what I thought about it. Didn't dislike it, but I certainly didn't think it was amazing. It was just a weird movie to me.

THAT. WAS. AMAZING.

We should pool money to fly to Peter Jackson's studio and collectively hug him.

Very slow in the beginning. I don't see what was so awesome about it. It was alright, but that's about it.

EDIT:

I liked Dark Knight much better.

I saw it over the weekend and didn't find it anything special. The whole "documentary" aspect of it was just stupid, the main character was annoying, and the movie started out slow I thought. But good action sequences in the last half. I give District 9 a 3/5 stars.

I swear if I hear another F-Bomb in a foreign accent, my last nerves will have been completely grounded. That was the biggest annoyance IMO.

Ok ok, let me clarify. His particular accent when swearing- I found annoying. NOT all foreign accents are like his.. My apologies for not being clear.

I agree. There are some American accents that annoy me alot as well. I shouldn't have made my comment exclusive to one particular set of people.

Maybe it's not the accent, but the swearing part that's annoying.
Anytime it's overdone, it's annoying. It didn't fit his character well, which seemed more of a pencil pusher and yes man trying to get somewhere in a corporate environment.

I kind of liked the documentary feel at the beginning. I think it added credibility to an otherwise far-fetched situation. The portrayal of the native people was especially interesting. It was good, but not life changing.

Yes, that's what I meant. If the colonel (the Merc) spent the whole movie swearing, it would've been acceptable because of his nature in character.

I'm with rami on this one.

Although, I too get very annoyed by many american accents, and I live here. Southern is annoying and nearly impossible to understand, North Dakota (think Fargo) hurts my ears, and the worst is west virginia which really sucks since my uncle lives there.

But I watch so many foreign films, most accents don't bug me, unless I'm trying to order a cheeseburger.

Upstate New York is horrendous. Soooo nasally and annoying. I kinda fall victim to this, but it's not so noticeable because of my deep voice.

I personally think that the main character was done really well. The pompousness he had in the beginning was done so naturally, the character felt like he was a real jerk that I could hate in real life. I especially enjoyed his interactions with prawns during the eviction scenes, which, according to Neil Blomkamp were completely improvised between the actor who played Wikas and the actor who played the Prawns.

This movie was amazing, but alas, I did enjoy the Dark Knight better. Still a favorite of mine.

Large, ground breaking, plot shattering spoilers:

I thought it was a very well put together message all around about humanity. And I thought how the government reacted would probably be how we would react too.

I thought the F bombs by him were great Didn't find them the least bit annoying.

The only part that was annoying to me was the plot kai with that stupid main antagonist dude. I would have liked to see him with a few more wounds. He always had the best luck.

One last thing, I have spent some time in my youth living in South Africa and am half south african - people in SA swear alot in my experience. So this character trait was correct in my eyes.

I've put it in a tag now, but seriously... if you don't want to take the risk, don't come into this thread. I think it's silly people cry spoilers in a movie thread. Don't click on it if you want to be that surprised at the theater.

And if you want to see how it was being reviewed, go to metacritic or something, instead of a forum, where you know, people talk about the movie instead of just straight up rate it.

Be careful, the picture might reveal he is in some fights. Also, the synopsis tells much more than I did in my post. A lot more.

I thought the racial hints towards the aliens was amusing.

After looking at that link, its very ridiculous. So a guy shows signs of cannibalism? I didn't take it that way, but because it was a black guy, then its racist?

Quote: "The aliens are loathsome, trash-eating [...], which isn't a truthful or flattering allegorical comparison for actual black South Africans "

Seriously? That's because they're not africans, they're friggin aliens! Sorry, but there's nothing racist about the movie unless you believe that alien race really exists.

I thought racism was another one of the movies messages. I quote someone from polycount on the issue:
Quote: "Racists always feel like they have a legitimate reason to be scared. In the U.S. people are scared of Mexicans because of the drug war violence. People instituted Jim Crow laws because they were scared that former slaves might become violent, and rightly so.

I thought it was really true to life. The aliens as a whole never really become human or likable. But when you get to know one or two of them, you like THOSE aliens. If they had been cute or pretty, it would have just made the humans look like senseless demons.

Just saw it last night. AMAZING. Second half was my favorite - constant action that was actually backed by a story with characters you cared about!

Great movie! I'm grabbing it on DVD when it comes out. Too bad all the alien set guns that went off on ebay went for thousands. I'd like to own that one that makes people explode...

If you spend a lot of time around South Africans, they speak like that, and do swear quite a bit. It isn't as overt as American swearing though, it just seems to blend into their conversation. I loved the accent.

Brilliant film.

I just got back from it and thought overall it was pretty good. I didn't like the last part where:

And, the main "bad guy" was fairly cookie cutter. Those two problems irritated me the most, but overall it was pretty good. The special effects were amazing, as I couldn't tell a lot of the time what was real and what wasn't, which is a first.

I saw this movie yesterday, and it was awesome!
Quote: "Just snuck into see it with my younger brother"

I don't know if that was literal, but i really did sneak in to see it. Me and my friend went to buy tickets, but the lady said that we had to be over 17 to buy tickets to an r rated movie. So my mom came and asked to buy the tickets, but the lady said we had to be accompanied by someone over 25 years old during the movie. After that, we snuck around, and snuck in the back door when someone left the theatre. I know it's illegal, but... we were willing to pay, and that lady was a jerk!

after that... it was awesome! When the movie started out, it almost seemed like a thriller, but the storyline developed very nicely. What i really liked about the movie was that...

But there were several inconsistencies...

All in all, i thought it was AWESOME. with capital LETTERS. AWESOME.
The swearing didn't bother me too much, I think I've become desensitized to swearing, with swearing at my school, at movies, on tv, in magazines, and everywhere i go, it's hard not to be.

I feel so left out in this thread, but I seriously want to watch the movie. I mean it's directed by Peter Jackson, I haven't got around to watching King Kong yet, but still, I can see how amazing his movies are. I really want to get around to watching District 9, unfortunately I don't pass the age limit.

watched it this morning, and i applaud the director, script writers, special effects guys... everyone, basically. with the type of film it is, it could have been scewed up so badly (case in point: independance day), but District 9 was done perfectly, not stupified in any way.
