Hmm...I thought I'd see if Chrome was any better than the last time I used it, so I've just downloaded it, but as soon as I start the installer, Kaspersky detects Firefox as a Trojan...do I smell a conspiracy?

No, Webkit is developed by the KDE project (Apple forked KHTML into Webkit, but either way, it's still KDE's tech, and they still actively develop it)

Mainly FF3.5 plus Safari on the iPhone. Used to be Chrome 3 beta (really good and rates much better than FF and IE on Acid3), but freezes too much, plus apart from FF I can't find anything else that allows the bookmark bar to have it's favicons configurable, even the folders (takes a bit to manually configure the plugin install file to work with 3.5 though):-

I still miss my old Mac at Uni running Mosaic (used to be mentioned in IE about box until recently) back in the day

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I use chrome on windows for light browsing. It isn't really suitable for heavy use as it has no noscript equivalent. That I often end up with zombie tags that won't die unless you restart the browser.
Nicer to have the whole browser crash and reload tabs on start up than have to kill the browser then reload tabs by hand.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

You can re-open the whole window if it crashes.

Honestly, though, I'm surprised so many people say it crashes. I've had it crash once in the past month. Perhaps you all haven't used it since 2.x was released? :/

I've had Chrome crash once, and that's because i went out looking for sites that might crash it just to see how it would react. The page just gave me a picture of a sad face and kept my tab open.

While Mozilla is faster at patching than MS, you can't ignore the fact they have more to patch.

While that is an important point, they have left major security holes open in IE for over a year at a time. Not trying to put down your point or anything, though. Just added to the discussion.

I think people who have major virus/spyware problems with IE is due to looking up too much pron. Chrome has an incognito mode for a reason people!

That article talks about bugs, which are easier to spot in an open source browser! Do you really think MS will publish all their bugs?

Isn't that mode meant for people to hide their surfing habits from others?

or from anyone else who uses the computer. I'm assuming one who views online porn would want to hide that fact. I'm not saying Incognito mode is more secure, just that its a reason to use Chrome if in fact porn is the reason people are being infected using IE. It was joke, but after having to explain it, it's lost its humor.

That's interesting o.O I've had a few times where AVG detects false trojans...in fact it's moving one of my games to the virus vault every morning at 5am(daily scheduled scan), ever since a recent patch...trying to get it to stop doing that. I am sure the program isn't a virus

I have VERY slow internet, and a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I used IE. IE is the heart my digital passionate hatred. I switched over to Chrome, and I must say, the paint on the Chrome side of the fence tastes so much sweeter

I currently use Firefox, but I have tried many other browsers. I like it because it looks okay, it performs pretty well and has plenty of addons and a nice bookmark system, and makes it easy to clear your history too.
I have tried Maxthon, and for some reason I can't even enter my web address.
I have tried Netscape, which is fine but I decided to stick with Firefox.
I've also tried Flock, which is fine but a little slow.
Internet Explorer I use as a backup, but I don't like how it's all cluttered, though it loads pages pretty fast.
I like Opera and Google Chrome because both are blazingly fast, but Opera has some problems with downloads, and Google Chrome just doesn't have the features I need.
And lastly, I have tried Safari. It looks pretty and the downloads seem somewhat faster, but it is slow to me.

In relation to the discussion on Safari...

A little over a year ago my friend allowed me to play on his MacBook. He had 3D software on there that I really wanted to try out, and so invited me over one evening. I didn't just mess with the 3D software though; I messed with every aspect about a Mac that I could in the two hours that were available. I must say that I really liked the Leopard OS, and Safari was really fast on the MacBook.

However, as much as I liked the Mac, I am just a little too dependent on Windows to really completely switch over someday...I suppose that's why dual-booting was invented.

But anyway, back on subject...

After reading this entire thread, it looks likely that most people use FireFox or Chrome. I really want to try out Chrome once I purchase my Dell Laptop next month, it sounds really cool.

Thanks to everyone who gave their input here!

Hoping that, one day, I'll finally get around to producing a game for you all to play.

Well, I use AOL, mostly because we can all agree that it's the best browser to ever be!!!

Yeah right! I'm jk - I'd rather not own a computer if I had to use AOL.

I mainly use Chrome because it's really fast to load up and is much lighter than Firefox, but the only downside is that there aren't much toolbars/plugins for Chrome (Including StumbleUpon). So I use Firefox when I want to do some heavy duty Stumbling.

Why only FF and nothing else? I think that's an issue with your computer. Only IE makes browser-specific technologies!

*bump*

I finally downloaded Chrome, and I love it! I've literally had it on my system for all of twenty minutes and love it so much, I want to snuggle it. Well, okay, not really, but still...it's great!

I love that every tab uses its own process. I listen to a lot of music via YouTube and when I was using FireFox, it would always 'break' the music for a second as I was loading another website. With Chrome, I've had multiple tabs open and the music going, without it stopping once. That's just utterly fantastic.

Oh, and I like the interface, too. It's pretty neat.

Sorry for the bump, just had to share this bit of info.

I use Firefox for both Windows and OS X, because I loves me some add-ons. In particular, I like Tree-style tabs (vertical on the left) and tab count, Greasemonkey, and one that lets you close all tabs displaying a page from the same domain.

Safari's nice and fast, but you can't do anything with it. When the Quicktime plugin installs you get a "This Frame" option in the right click menu that lets you look at the Quicktime media in a JSP page. I use this to download mp3s from the Blackboard for my uni courses like Music History--saves having to buy the $80 anthology.

I think I'll try Chrome on Windows though, it sure looks sexy.

What is the appeal of Opera? I've used it but a couple of times, what's that magical element that attracts people to it? I'm not bashing, rather I'm genuinely curious.

It's very lightweight and compact compared to other browsers. It doesn't have the huge, complex engine of Firefox for themes and addons and it doesn't take an hour to open a tab like IE. If you tell it not to write to the drive, ever, it doesn't. Firefox is bad for this. You tell it to use no disk cache and it still writes often to your documents folder, which causes a strain on networks if you're on a networked account and burns cycles on SSDs.

Not to mention they don't break everything every time they release an update.

One thing IE lacks that every other browser has done better is managing the history. Safari 4 crashed on my the other day (in windows, go figure) and I had a few dozen tabs open(which chrome can handle ok). Safari didn't have the recover state feature, so I opened the history in hopes I'd find some of the sites I was on. Safari 4 uses Apple's cover flow to browse the history, its awesome! Basically you just scroll through snapshots of the pages you were on, very helpful when you're not sure of the name or address of the site you're looking for.

Apple claims Safari is the world's fastest browser, I'd like to know what tests they've done to justify that claim.

I do wish Chrome would ditch that annoying download animation and just have a download tab.

Well..........

The new Safari 4 was installed on the college iMacs over the summer. Very loud startup noise that sounds suspiciously like an early version of Windows, heh.

The first thing I did was navigate to this forum and try to log in. Halfway through typing my password, it pinwheeled and then crashed, taking the Dock with it and the crash reporter crashed too. Then the Menu Bar locked up, too, so I just reset the machine and continued using Opera.

So, from my analysis, I'd say by far it's the fastest browser to crash.

They claim that the Javascript engine is the fastest. I tested it myself. Only slightly faster at Javascript than Chrome, but a far more unresponsive/laggy-feeling GUI.

That will be the case on Windows because it doesn't use the Windows standard font renderer, ClearType, but instead the softer, print-orientated Apple solution which looks blurry because it doesn't align type to pixels.

Ouch. Doesn't even used ClearType? Does iTunes, by any chance, use similar Apple libraries instead of Windows libraries? (It, too, is inexplicably slow at times)

OS X/Apple for Windows

Windows Vista Cleartype

As you can see, although it's more true to the original font because it's not distorting it to fit into a pixel grid, it's fainter and fuzzier. I think Apple's solution is still good - for print. I can see its merit inside desktop publishing software and typesetting/graphic design software as you want the output to be true to form as possible to the input. I also think the OS should "cheat" a little to gain readability though...

Ubuntu, above, is based on the FreeType engine and is more similar to Vista but with harder edges.

Suffice to say, there's not "right" or "wrong" way to render text, just preference and perhaps to a degree fitness for purpose.

Interestingly, Opera will actually display that like any other image... Firefox never used to do that with BMP files.

Interesting, but not surprising. Most basic image files should really be viewable in most browsers by now.
