I've been using 32-bit since I built this system almost 2 years ago mainly because of so many incompatibilities with the 64-bit version, primarily with java. Is it safe to upgrade to 64-bit now? (I have legit discs through school) I already know Photoshop isn't supported on XP64, we tried it with my gf's PC and it had issues. (adobe even told us they don't support it)

I know some of you here are running XP-64, know of any other things that just won't work on it?

I don't run it myself (I run Windows 7 64-bit). You probably already know this, but most people say it's no good because of, well, as you said, incompatibilities, and I believe a lot of other instabilities as well. Best to find someone who's tried it though.

I tried it. There's no problem at all. I not once found a program in two years of my father's laptop that didn't work. I imagine there were driver problems early into the variant's lifetime but all seemed fine here.

I popped in another harddrive and tried installing Windows 7 64-bit, but its been sitting for 15min at the "checking video performance". The animation keeps playing so I don't know how long I should have to wait for whatever it's doing.

Just use 32-bit,64-bit is only for people that want to squeeze the last mb out of their RAM.

hehe, that was the reason I wanted to use it too. Is there really no performance gain from the CPUs?

Oh, and the Windows 7 issue, I just rebooted. Seems to be the only answer I found online.

Well 64-bit processors have more registers so applications that are specifically compiled as 64-bit should technically run more efficiently.

Playing around with Windows 7, apparently IE8 is still a 32-bit process.

Maybe its just me, but the Internet seems way faster on Windows 7. Just downloaded a 80mb program (itunes) in seriously 15 seconds. Speed started around 3.75MB and never dropped below 2.2MB/s.

If you check your start menu, you should see a regular Internet Explorer and a 64bit Internet Explorer (use chrome).

I just installed full Win 7 Pro yesterday (thank you MSDNAA), but I didn't have any problems with the "Checking Video Performance" . It seems to have a much easier time connecting to my wireless signal than the RC did, which makes me happy.

I really think Win7 has more efficient network support. After a few hours I installed XP 32 and downloaded the same things I did on Win7. My max speed then was only 500kbps instead of the 2.5mbps.

The internal message passing system was rewritten for Vista, some of it in raw assembler. It's probably one of the fastest on that level on the planet.

I dont know if you'd technically see taht kind of improvement on vista/win7's updated networking pipeline, but it's a little faster. More likely you're seeing increased speed because your old install may have had more bloat.

x32 bit vs x64 bit is pretty much the same thing unless you want more ram accessible. Then you should choose x64. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter. Some particularly old software may complain about x64.
