Yep, starting my first day of college tomorrow. I'm really not all that nervous. I guess I am a little bit but not too bad. I'm not excited for it at all to be honest. Everyone says it's the best years of your life, but I'm not going away to college. I'm staying at home but just doing a little commute to the college. Hopefully it's still good times.

I'll be getting my degree in criminal justice. I plan to be a police officer.

Wish me luck everyone

He's in California...

Yeah, I was majoring in Criminal Justice... It's cool you want to be a cop however... You do know once you finish I will be making fun of you... (Not because I'm jealous you graduated, but because you'll be a cop)

Actually, I did the same thing. I graduated awhile ago, but I feel I missed part of the whole college experience by not living in a dorm. Staying at home does have benefits though.

A few people have said nearly the exact same thing to me lol.

That's one of the reasons I'm really not looking forward to going that much. Staying at home seems like it does ruin part of the college experience.

Yeah, that's not near as fun as living independently on or near campus, but hopefully it will still be fun.

I'm in my second year of college (which is used interchangeably with university over here in the US for you UKers). I'm still living on campus, and so far they are the best years of my life: independence, good friends, interesting classes, living in a mini-city of semi-intelligent (relative to high school) peers, and lots of free time (I actually have more now than in high school, because you aren't in school 5 days a week * 8 hours a day, most people only take 14-18 hours in college, meaning you are physically in the classroom for that many hours a week, less than half of what you were in high school).

I do know some people who chose to (or had to) live at home, and aren't having near as much fun, because it's almost like an extension of high school. You lose the independence and atmosphere of living on or near campus, and have fewer chances to meet people (and therefore make friends), but I guess it's whatever you make it.

You need a degree to become a cop? All I thought you'd need is to be able to beat a pedestrian into a living pulp.

Kidding of course. College/Uni is great and I'm sure you'll love it, personally I think it's better to live than to commute, if you're willing to get involve or stay around a mate's, you'll be able to still join in when it comes to the 'fun', though I've had a couple of class-mates that after lectures go straight home, even when offered to sleep on our sofa. On the other hand we have a friend who joined in on our mad-nights out in our first year, despite commuting.

I think the environment is much better too for working in, but then I have a terrible working environment at home, there's no comfortable spot to work in. But at least when you're studying, it's only a short walk to the library. I don't know what it is like for College students in America, but I'm sure you'll meet some awesome people at College.

You need to be 21 to carry a pistol in the USA. Most graduate college when they're either 21 or 22 years old if they start right out of high school.

So by the time he finishes, he'll be old enough to carry a pistol in public plus it'll make his resume better because he spent four years getting a degree.

Makes sense - it could also mean better promotions, I imagine or better opportunities in the line of work in general.

Well here's how my first day of college went...

I'm taking two online classes and was going to take two classes on campus. But that all went to hell. The two classes I tried to get were filled up so I had to get what is called an Authorization code which would allow me to take the classes.

The first class I went into only had room for 4 authorization codes and 28 people needed them including to say. Needless to say, I didn't get in that class. So then I tried to get in the next class. Again, I needed a code from the professor. There were 5 openings and 15 people trying to add the class. So the professor gives all of us the 5 available codes and told us the first five to enter them into the system gets the class. So we all rush out and I didn't make it so I didn't get in that class either. Well since that all went to hell I tried to add another class. Basically the same thing happened to that one as the first class I tried to add.

So pretty much after 4 hours, I didn't go to a single class. Now I'm stuck with only two online classes and I'm struggling to figure out what to do now.

So today was terrible.

Ha, reminds me of my first day of college... Except we did a lottery system, and I won. I always win.

OK dude, you need to improvise here. Basically, a good friend of mine who didn't get as lucky as me, bugged the frick out of the teacher everyday all day asking if there were any drops, and kept checking...

And what do you know, he got everything he needed...

So do that, and you will get your classes.

Yeah I'm going to try and do just that actually. We'll see how it goes. It was just a frustrating day and it put me in a bad mood all day.

Wait, that's your school's system for choosing classes? The first day they start everyone rushes in and tries to grab what they can? That's ridiculous...my school (and I think most others) does online registration 6 months beforehand, and only after you've been advised (through email or in person) by an academic adviser about what classes you should take. It's still first come, first serve, but if needed, they open up more classes, and there are so many options that it's nearly impossible not to be put in a class you need. Also, within those 6 months, people will drop and change classes so that something you need may open up and you have the option to change your schedule as needed at any time up till the first week of school.

Anyways, sorry it's not going well so far, maybe you should just go with the two online courses this semester, and then next semester dive into the real college experience somewhere else, which I think every intelligent person wanting a higher education should have.

Even at a community college you register months before it starts. I registered for my classes (not a community college btw) about a month ago. It pays to do stuff in advance.

I did everything about a two months ago. I was told that it's guaranteed you can add a class even if it's full and there were two classes that I really wanted that were already full. I made a mistake by not having signed up for two other classes just in case. I didn't think I would have needed to. Especially since my counselor told me I should be able to add the classes.

I'm starting my first class in 20 minutes. I'm also commuting to school since I live about 15 minutes away. I am a bit nervous but after today, I should be fine. I only have classes from 8:30AM to 12:50PM on Mondays and Wednesdays.

All im gonna say is: SCHOOL SUCKS! No really, especially gym class is annoying for me,teacher says we dont do it because they force us,its because they need marks that are needed, then he should simply write A+ for all and bye.Such bad thinking.

We're taking a ten minute break in Math 95 and all I can say is that I'm bored out of my mind because I know all of this stuff already...

I'm amazed you logged on in that time. I remember all IT lessons being moved to right after morning break and being told to log in before break so they *might* have started up by then.

I'm on my iPhone. I'm always logged in.

Anyway, my english class is going to be amazing. We're watching 28 Days Later and writing a review of it, and then discussing the role of fear in media, entertainment and politics. The class is called Fear, Terror and Writing.
