So I just bought a new d-link router and usb dongle to connect my computer to the internet. The router is a wireless n basic router, and I'm using it as a switch. When I connect to the router, everything works fine, internet is fast and my signal strength is 80-100%. But after about 30 minutes or so, it just won't let me connect to the internet, even though it says I'm still connected. I'm using Windows Vista and the latest drivers. The dongle is a d-link Dwa-130 Rev.C and the router is a DIR-615.

I think you're granted a certain amount of time on the network each connection; look in the settings. Here I've set it to 3 days, as far as it'll go.

Are there any other computers connected to ur router?

The Combined network traffic could be knocking you clean off the internet.....just a thought.

What would that be under? I know how to access the router and everything, I already made sure none of the ip addresses conflicted(Three routers).

I'm using it as a switch, only one other computer is connected to it(not wirelessly). The router the switch is connected to is full though.

Edit: No I don't think it's the DHCP lease time.

One thing to look at is the power usage, a lot of these USB dongles are set to drop connection to save power - check the screenshot and open up control panel, classic view, then follow those arrows... but obviously selecting the USB dongle from the network connections, or wherever it hides.

You want to un-click that part that says 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.' - then it should stay connected all the time and also give more stable connection. This is definitely a factor with laptops, but I expect it could cause this issue in desktop PC's too.

EDIT: Duh, remember to attach the damn screenshot!

DHCP leases renew themselves automatically (rebind) so that's definitely not the problem

I have vista and a linksys router and have been fighting the good fight on this for a while now. Some say it's a linksys bug and some say it's a vista bug ... I don;t know, but they are linked. I have used linksys for years with no'problems. Got a vista laptop and have connections problems off and on for no reason and with no consistency. I have local networking, but internet just shuts off. It may work for 3 months and it may work for a week. Then it just starts back working on it's own. Sometimes after 3 hours and sometimes after 3 days. No matter what you turn on or off, reset, or power down for a time. There are 2 setups doing this same thing (my aunt's house with her own router and vista laptop) and there was 3. Google it and you'll find lots of people having this problem. My buddy Chris had the same problem with his and went to walmart and bought a different name brand router (a cheaper one too) and so far hasn't had any problems. That's my next move.

I get a similar problem on our satellite machines (both XP) but not on the main PC (Vista). The symptoms are that the signal strength shows as Low or Very Low and the machines won't connect for a while. No idea whether the problem is our thick stone walls, a fault in the hub or something else. It could be a power down/power up issue so I've just tried Van B's suggestion on the laptop as an experiment.

It's not a major problem but is puzzling.

The problem isn't bad signal strength, I can connect to the router just fine, but after a while it just wont load webpages, even if I reconnect to the router. But I did find that I can fix it if a do an ipconfig/ renew in the command prompt, so what could the problem be?
