would dual booting it with xp be as simple as partitioning the drive then installing it to the separate partition?

Ones windows, ones linux. No windows programs will run on linux(Or will they?, check out wine). Biggest diffrence i had the the installer deal, completly diffrent to windows.

You've spelt 'I've' incorrectly.

Come on, you could've found these questions in less than a minute with a simple Google search. It seems nowadays people just post in these forums just for the sake of posting

They are nothing alike, except they are operating systems

No, easier: just download the CD image, burn it to a CD, put it in your computer while in windows. An Autorun dialog will popup. Choose "Install on my computer without changing windows" or something like that. And it will install Ubuntu on your computer. Restart your computer. A menu will pop up asking you if you want to boot into windows or Ubuntu. Choose ubuntu. Follow the onscreen instructions for finishing the installation. And poof. You're dualbooting.
If you don't like it, you can uninstall it by booting into windows, and uninstalling it from the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Homever as this uses Wubi (Windows installer for Ubuntu) it installs Ubuntu on virtual image so it runs slower than normal and may have unexpected behavior, and wine wont probably work. So i suggest just installing normally and partioining own partition for Ubuntu.

Just to clarify, it doesn't run in a virtual machine, it runs from a file mounted as a virtual drive.

sure. But for someone who doesn't even know the difference between Windows and Ubuntu, then I'd say it'll do him just fine. And wine works just fine. It's a great way to just try out the OS. If you like it enough, then repartition. Otherwise, partitioning hard drive, installing, hating it, repartitioning... that's a pain and is hardly worth it. Especially if you can just use Wubi.

What if you have plenty of space, but you cant make a large partition because there are unmovable files all over you hard drive(I think). Ive got 30 gigs of free space but i can only get a extra partition the size of just over 200 mb's. So Wubi is extreamly helpfull .
