For a school-related research, I'm looking for people of ages 30 and up that can answer some questions in this thread related to platforming titles.

While I've already got a lot of results, the following 4 questions need some more answers to give satisfactory coverage of my target audience.

If you fit in this category, would you please be so kind to answer the following questions in this topic?

1. Which of the following conjures the feeling 'classic platformer' to you the most?
A. Retro graphics
B. Simple gameplay
C. Level / Worlds-system
D. Other [Please define]

2. Which of the following elements is most important in a good platformer?
A. Reflexes
B. Timing
C. Simple Puzzles
D. Quick choices
E. Other [Please define]

3. According to you, can a game in which you cannot directly control the main character still be defined as platformer?
A. Yes
B. No

4. If you had to give a tip to a game-developer developing a platform title at this point, what would it be?
A. [Please define]

Thanks in advance.

I have reached the ripe old age of 40 this year.

1. A. Retro graphics - Manic miner, Jetset willy, monty games, etc

2. B. Timing - manic miner is prime example

3. B. No - must be able to control main character. Can't even think of a platform game where you don't play the main character.

4. Lots of variety, not too hard, no time limits, hidden bonus areas, clean layout, easy to see what to do next, no silly backtracking the same screens over and over again.

Boo!

I wouldn't necessarily rule out time limits, many classic platformers had time limits.

1. B
2. A/B kinda go together, C would be my second choice.
3. No, that just sounds absurd.
4. KISS (keep it simple stupid) Simple and fun.

4/ Go for plenty of animation frames, and look at Psygnosis games, and Prince Of Persia to see how more animation looks better.

1. Simple gameplay,
2. Timing/Simple Puzzles,
3. No,
4. Target both young & old market for testing, as well as different people that prefer different genre's(FPS, MMO, RPG, RTS), after testing, make sure you get fully detailed feedback of them to develop on.

1. C - Level / Worlds-system
Can't have a platformer without levels.

2. B - Timing
Jumping to moving platforms and not dieing is a timing skill.

3. A - Yes
Even if you use other characters it doesn't change the main dynamics that make the game a platformer.

4. A - Don't be afraid to occasionally make a level hard (but not all the time). The harder you make some levels the more determined people will be to beat the level. And never put cheats in a game because those are only for whiny kids who can never play a game without cheating.
