This is a sad thing to hear. He was a pretty good actor and I hate to see him go.

RIP Patrick Swayze

Didn't he have cancer?

Norman Borlaug also died (saves making another thread):

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/13/norman-borlaug-dead_n_284886.html

For those who don't know he's the guy who did a great service in dealing with world hunger in improving crops, which is speculated as saving more lives than anybody else in History.

Age: 95. Died of cancer.

Norman Borlaug,

Ive heard of him in the history books, 'modern history', he did the world a great act of kindness. God took pity on him, alive till the age of 95, A near century, he was here for the entire advance boom.

Few would pass that up.

what? did god get bored of him and give him cancer?

So sad that everyone seems to be dying of cancer, does no one die of old age anymore?

My fiance's step-grandfather was told he had cancer. Can't remember which one but apparently with the right drugs you are expected to last about 20 years. Because he was told when he was in his early 80s they decided not to bother with more aggressive treatment because it's not bad to live with and old age will finish him off first. Essentially getting old sucks...

Oh, and RIP Keith Floyd too. He was a good laugh as a TV cook. All that "just a small glass of wine" obviously didn't help as he looked about 90 when he died at only 65 years old.

Cheers

Patrick Swayze was one of my moms favorite actors. Her favorite move... To Wong Foo. I have no idea why though.

Cancer takes a lot of people because we live in an age where chemicals are pumped into our bodies every day, when they were never meant to be. Our thirst for more more more has driven us to create the demon that takes so many of us before our time.

Electricity is to blame too. We're constantly surrounded by electricity at our homes. Houses/schools located close to high power lines have higher "cancer cluster" numbers. Cancer also takes more actors because sets require massive amounts of electricity to power bright lights, huge fans, and other equipment.

Or it could be that most of the other things that killed people off are now more treatable and more avoidable, leaving cancer the biggest killer.

You wouldn't say the biggest killer in most parts of Africa is Cancer...

Then again, electricity there isn't as developed as the way it is on our comfy side of the planet, and they don't eat as much synthetic stuff. So I think it should almost be expected if it weren't for the poverty amongs other things, that cancer would be pretty low on their list.

People don't die of old age anymore because some more specific names were found for it, such as cancer, heart attack and so on.

Well said.

I have no doubt the incidence of cancer has gone up in todays world, but so too has the quality of care.

Cancer would be busy killing whether we go around with mobile phones and TV's or not.

If it makes anyone feel better, by the time the wee sprogs on these forums get to old age, I'd like to think the chances of surviving cancer will be excellent across the board. So much money and research is being pumped into it with small victories all the time.

Perhaps, but I also read that Swayze admitted that his chain smoking may have had something to do with it...

An awful lot of things can cause cancer, it's quite difficult to avoid the risk of.

I really hope you are joking. If you aren't, they are subject to one of the biggest "causes" of cancer daily. I'll let you guess what it is.

That is not factual in the least bit. How about power line workers?

WTF!! Electricity gives you cancer? That's funny, I thought it was radiation! Which quite ironically they also use to kill cancer!

Slightly off topic, Hi Dazzag! It's been ages since I've seen you! Have you been away from the forums?

I'm not sure about power line workers but here's an article that says living near high power lines increases the risk of cancer:

There is no hard evidence that having high powered lights on you causes you to get cancer faster, targeting actors. That does not make sense, when there are so many jobs where people are around electrical devices. I've also read that light bulbs may increase your risk of cancer, and coffee may decrease it. Life in general increases your risk of cancer

Yep, been a while. But no haven't really been away. Simply moved back to the UK, and got engaged which totally eats into free time. Plus I have quite a few projects on the go which puts DB into a bit of a backburner really. Which is annoying as I had something pretty good going. Sigh, too much stuff to do...

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey", died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in.

And then the trouble started.
