MDNAA allows you to get free software, including windows. I got Windows Vista for free by using a friend's college account (he used the 32bit for himself, was still entitlted to download the 64bit so gave it to me), however, when I ask my own uni (MMU) about this, I got this response:

Quote: "I'm afraid I can't help you. I've no idea why my contact details are on the website as I'm not a member of MSDN AA and don't know how you would log in. I've asked someone from our Help Desk team who seems to deal with Microsoft if he knows anything about it and as far as he knows MMU is not currently a member of MSDN."

The point is I got this contact's email address off the MSDNAA website as the respresentative for my uni, not only that, but my uni appears TWICE on the MSDNAA list of particpants.

Today I have a lecture with the guy who runs the CS department so I'll ask him about it, but no doubt he'll just refer me to the admin who i got this response from.

The reason this is bugging me is because currently on MSDNAA, windows 7 is floating around for download. Any students out there, I urge you to get your unis on board if they arent already, you can check here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/academic/dd861347.aspx

you may be entitled to free MS software and not realise it

If I was doing a computing course, maybe. Our Uni already has it, I know because those programming sods brag about it. They get to play with Unreal Engine as well.

But MS are releasing Windows 7 for £30 for students and our Uni can sell MSOffice for ~£30 to us, so that'll do me...just when I have £60 to spare.

Also, MMU - Manchester I take it? I'll be there at the end of the month with some of my Uni's societies at the cancer hospital there to perform for people who are running to raise money for the hospital.

anyways, yeh, from what i can tell the £30 offer is once only, and I have 2 systems to upgrade, hence looking for the 2nd offer..

I have access to MSDNAA, and yes two keys for Windows 7 are available on it, one for a 32-bit version, and one for a 64-bit version (interchangeable apparently). Have both installed on my machines at the moment. Visual Studio, every version of Vista, and I think one copy of XP are also available, along with a couple other pieces of relatively minor software that most people won't use.

It's only available to Comp. Sci, Comp. Eng, and IST students here at Penn State though. Best thing I can think of is to contact the head of your department at Uni about it, just to check if your university provides it for your major, but it looks like you did that already, so good luck if it isn't resolved soon

My old uni is listed twice, if only this offer was for ex-uni students.

Yea I just got Visual Studio and Vista Business 64 bit. I might get others if I need them.

I'm in love with this thing though. Makes life so much easier. Not to say my Express editions of visual studio items was too bad either

This is just the topping on the cake. Too bad I legally can't sell anything created with them.

I know my uni is on there, problem is I'm a music major
Hopefully I can get them to let me on there when I take Data Structures next semester.

Yup, I have access to it. It's nice

Under the MSDNAA terms and conditions though, you are suppose to remove the software after your done being a student. Not sure how accurate this is, but here a response I got from a fellow student who seemed like he had read the bs.

"In actuality we are supposed to remove software from our PCs obtained through the MSNDAA when we are not a student anymore. Some of the software also lists Baker College as the organization as well. The Visual Studio that I downloaded from them does not list Baker on it, but since it was acquired as a student when I am not attending Baker or another college with access to MSDNAA software we are required by law to remove it. After reading through the terms and conditions it does make me wonder what they would say if you were to stop being a student during use to potentially charge you more, but mostly it is during purchase that you have to prove you are a student. And about not being able to get updates by not having access to MSDNAA would require them to ask you for a log in every time you went to update, since it is a shared key with "unlimited" number of uses."

So, I was going to download Windows 7 and install it via the MSDNAA, but I decided not to because A) I would probably have to uninstall it when I'm done and B) I'm not sure you can produce anything commercial on educational software.

Going with the $30 Win 7 deal is much better.

Free software? My college snuck in the costs for the Adobe CS4 package into my tuition fee without telling me, a giantic waste of money as I already own the programs from the CS3 suit that we'll be using during this year. I've emailed them about a refund but it looks like they're just going to ignore me.

Sid Sinister, you should be fine, as far as i know theresno special edition of windows that stops working or uninstalls itself (except the beta of course, but thats a global date, not set per person) based on when you stop being a student. how does MS know when you arent a student any more?

I got windows vista of a friends account several yrs back and hes no longer a student at the college, yet i havent had issues with it..

One thing I should note about what Sid Sinister said, the keys that MSDNAA gives out for Windows 7 do not have an unlimited number of uses, and after one use are shut off. I wasn't able to activate Windows 7 64-bit using the same key on both my laptop and my desktop (though using the 32-bit key worked just as well to activate it).

I'm not sure about the other keys, but the Windows 7 one isn't an unlimited key.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

@RUCCAS: Ugh, I feel for you. That's kind of along the lines of one of my professors telling me to load up on all these 'required' art supplies, only to use six of them. $200 in the hole.

Maybe it's because of my contacts within Baker, but my college seems to listen to me pretty closely. I got both the Elements of Drawing class (the class where the story above came from), and the Java Class dropped from the Computer Animation program. Elements of Drawing was reworked into a Character Design class and Java, lol, just went away.

I think your talking to the wrong guy at your school about the issue. Find someone that will listen (sincerely) and then pass it forward. Ask to be part of your programs advisory board. That's what I did, and now they ask me to sit and give my two cents every year.

Are you sure it wasn't just a case of not being able to have it on 2 machines at the same time? I've reinstalled my copy of vista several times since i got it through msdnaa

I used www.dreamspark.com to get visual studio 2008 professional for free. It also has some other useful stuff from Microsoft.
