I have the following graphics card in my system: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440.

I was curious to see how much power it had, and it only has 64MB memory! The PC it's in is from 2003, so I'm not really surprised, but still, it's no wonder that games like Star Wars Battlefront II slowed down often!

I then Googled the MacBook Pro's graphics card, and it's got 128MB of memory. A little tiny laptop is more powerful than my current PC.

Just thought I'd share that with y'all.

Just wait until NVIDIA's Ion becomes more widespread in things like Netbooks, which should happen around Windows 7's actual release.

Here's a benchmark test of NVIDIA Ion on a netbook setup, to make your wrinkled graphics card weep:

Wow!

Well, I'm now confident that a MacBook can run the 3D software I want it to! And dual-booting it with Windows 7 (for DBPro game development) won't be a problem for it either!

But man, I thought for sure my PC's graphics card was at least 128MB. Do they even sell 64MB cards anymore? Seeing as laptops (and now even Netbooks)are more powerful, the answer is NO. I'm ancient.

FYI, the video memory a graphics card comes with is largely irrelevant. As long as it's 256mb or above the actual card matters far more. 512mb is reccomended. Otherwise, the system will start paging video RAM in and out of main RAM.

The model no. and the letters afterwards matter more. A 9400M will flatten pretty much any game on low detail nowadays, although the paltry 128Mb makes it quite useless.

That certainly explains why SW:BF2 ran slow on my system! I've never even dared to run anything like COD4 on it.

On the bright side, it runs all three of the first Harry Potter games decently.

Lol, you have problems with Battlefront 2 - on my mom's PC (which I'm using until I buy a new one - my previous' card burned down) I have (rare but still present) problems with first Max Payne ...

Make games, not war.

My computer's so ancient, it looks at DarkBasic and says "DAAAAAAAAMN!".

It cannot even run Counter Strike: Source at a playable speed on lowest detail and special set-ups made to quicken it up.

WOW That's a seriously ancient PC.

Don't feel too bad, though, Jer. I had a 32MB NVIDIA TNT2 card for the longest time. It's only recently that I upgraded to a GeForce 8600. Even still, I've noticed a serious need for 512MB video RAM over my 256.

And I hope to get an ION-powered netbook come Christmas time. I'm in desperate need of a more powerful laptop.

My older computer's chipset has 16mb of memory.
I actually tried setting it to 1mb in the BIOS... had to flash the BIOS to make the computer work again. So much for consuming 1MB of memory

The other PC (the one I'm currently on) only has 32MB, which explains why it ran DarkBASIC games really slowly. Wow, these PCs are outdated...

512? Dang it, that makes MacBooks even more expensive! Over $2,000. I guess I'll just have to stick to either 128 or 256MBs. I'm really only concerned about the graphics because of game development, which I'll do with DBPro on the Windows 7 partition I'll install on the MacBook Pro. That's pretty much all I'm going to use 7 for is game development and some casual gaming. The Mac side will be for video editing and web browsing.

Really though, what programs/games are you running that require 512MB?

Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Resident Evil 5, Crysis (duh ), F.E.A.R. 2, and others. All could benefit from it.

Indeed they could!

Luckily, I won't be running such games on the MacWindows Laptop, probably just games made with DarkBASIC. I think the default 128MB card will work just fine, but I will consider upping it to 256MB.

128MB will work fine for that. Macs are expensive enough as it is.

Yes, yes they are. It's a really good thing they can dual-boot with Windows, otherwise I'd feel like I was WAY overpaying for just a fancy lookin' interface.

I don't have a graphics card and my PC has 128mb RAM!
It can barely count to ten without breaking into a sweat...

How well does it run Windows '95?

Nice! I'm jealous of all of you who have more than 64MB VRAM!

It really humors me (for some reason) that tiny laptops and netbooks have more powerful graphics capabilities than the high-end PC we own (well, it was a high-end gaming machine when we got it). 80GB hard drive, 512MB RAM, 64MB graphics card, and of course Windows Xp Home Edition! It sounds so outdated now...

Windows XP x64
3.5GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (Dual Core, 3ghz each)

I don't overclock - too risky.

Its a good day to do what has to be done by me and help my brother to defeat the enemies

I've never liked the idea of overclocking. With my luck, I'd fry the processor within five minutes and then have to buy a new one. Heh, that reminds me of this one time when my dad wanted to clean out the PC. It was all full of dust, so we took the cover off and used the vacuum to suck it all up. He then proceeded to take the processor off of the motherboard and sucked the dust off of it, and bent a few of the connectors in the process. Luckily he was able to use needle-nose pliers and bend them back to normal and put the processor back in the system. It ran great, and still does. I have to say I'm really glad we didn't have to buy a new processor.

Then again, I kind of wish the processor had been un-usable so that we could have bought a new computer altogether. xD
