What OS do you have? Imma guess Vista, is it 64 or 32 bit?

Moral of this story: Anti-virus is necessary.

Who said malware had anything to do with it? It was probably a filesystem/drive failure. It's perfectly possible that a file might become corrupted.

I second that. I've used (how stoopid was I ) a computer without anti-virus some time ago, for a good while, without catching a virus. The idea of how fast you can get one is way exaggerated, IMHO.

I keep a working copy of all our domestic accounts in an Excel file. I've also taken to backing up the file.

Earlier this week I edited the file, saved it, and saved a copy to the backup location.

Later in the day I opened it again only to find the file had been screwed up. "Thank goodness I saved a backup!" I thought.

Unfortunately, unknown to me, the file was already screwed up when I backed it up.

I don't think I have a virus. Although I did pick up a bug while I was on holiday ...

I've really got to stop making statements on this forum if I'm not dead serious about them.

If you're using Vista it might have an earlier copy of the file. I think. Was that implemented or not?

After a while with Vista Windows Media Player stopped working for me. I had to download *shudder* iTunes in the end (I hate apple) but it vexed me greatly. Luckily a recent complete failure of my computer means I had to wipe it and lose basically everything on it, so I can build my library again in preperation for losing it all when this slightly dodgy OS decides once again to throw a spanner in the works. But yeah my solution was just to download alternative programs - WMP is my favourite media player interface in general, but if it's not working properly it's probably time to move on.
