You can get an awesome card for under $200, either you're not looking very hard or you have unrealistic expectations of "good".

Radeon HD 4890 1GB - $200
GeForce GTX 260 869MB - $200

Those aren't good cards?

Those cards are to die for!

Seriously Travis, check out newegg.com. They have great deals on graphics cards. Just make sure they're compatible with your motherboard and monitor.

I haven't heard good things about swapping video cards on laptops .
Try looking on newegg best site so far for computer parts.

I don't have any clue about messing with hardware in a laptop, but i got a laptop with a GeForce 9600m GT and it's really good (not quite as good as a comparably priced desktop graphics card, but still good).

tigerdirect also has some decent stuff... but...

Laptops are a pain in the butt to upgrade other than RAM or maybe a HDD.

There were some Dells (I think?) which had changeable graphics cards many a year ago but it was scrapped because the cards were expensive due to their proprietary nature and so nobody bought them.

Doesn't change the fact that the graphics chipset is BGAed to the board.

I don't think you understand how difficult it is to remove a BGA.

It isn't like a chip with legs. You can't just be careful with a soldering iron and get away with it. You either need to put the whole board in an oven (risky!) or use a reflow station which Geek Squad, I can guarantee, will not have.

Bold, capital letters aren't going to make the GPU upgradeable, you know. Just sayin'.

That's what he's talking about... jeez, can't you read? The Intel Mobile 965 Googled conjures images of Intel mini-PCIe cards. Mini-PCIe is usually used for WiFi cards in laptops.

I've got to wonder, though; how is the image getting to the display? If it's going back down the PCIe, that's gonna be sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Listen, between this Intel PCIe card you're trying to find (I can't find any info on it either, past it's the name of a chipset, which you can't just swap out), you should forget about upgrading the graphics card for any laptop.

Yes, there have been external and/or swappable solutions. One that comes to mind is the ASUS XG Station, which works through an Express Card slot on your notebook, which runs roughly as fast as a PCI-Express x1 slot. But it wasn't put up for sale anywhere but Australia, and it was pulled from production in 2009, so you're kinda out of luck with that option.

If you're looking to upgrade your graphics capability, buy a newer laptop with a better graphics card, or buy/build a desktop with a better card. The internal graphics card with your laptop isn't upgradeable in any sense of practicality, and even if you did find a Geek Squad location, like you're intending, that would be willing to do the work, you'd be better off just buying/building a new rig after how much they'd charge you for the service.

well there is a geek squad in my location, they said they could on the phone, they dont charge alot to replace them either!,but im probally going to get one of those windows 7 laptops,i figured out the other day that i could get a laptop with windows 7 home premium for $400,i could just sell my current laptop for $300 and get the better one for $100! so i think i will just do that. thanks for the help anyway.

They probably think you mean a graphics card swap for a desktop, which is effortless to do. You gotta remember that Geek Squad is also the kind of group that'd charge $100 to install a game console at your house, so they might assume you're just mistaken.

But if you're referring to one of those NVIDIA Ion platform Netbooks coming out on Windows 7's release, go for it. The graphics card it comes with isn't the most powerful, but they're certainly better than any intel integrated chip (which I expect your laptop has, if you're wanting to upgrade it so much), and do a damn decent job of running a lot of modern games at decent settings with playable frame rates. Though, don't expect miracles. I might even pick one up too to replace the laptop I have for taking notes and doing school work.

Before you let Geek Squad do anything watch these videos:

I've been fixing computers since the 90's and the amount they charge for the service you don't actually get is outrageous. If I was you I would only trust a mom-and-pop computer shop rather than the Geek Squad.

Just looks like all the other Intel graphics stuff to me. It's just integrated into the northbridge. Nothing you could upgrade/replace or stick on a card.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

You've just got to be social and talk to any customer that knows about computers. They can usually direct you to a cheaper and more reliable tech guy than any major stores techies. There may be a mom-and-pop store near you that you've never heard about because they can't afford advertising.

I doubt HP would do it for you. A reflow is so expensive to setup and do that on motherboard failure most of the time they just replace the whole motherboard.

Sometimes getting a new laptop is the answer.

If you want one with nice graphics, you'll have to plan on spending at least $550+ for decent graphics. Dell has nice laptops and so does Gateway, but HP and Compaq are decently priced. Be careful when making your final decision!

Don't expect to be able to rely on a laptop with powerful graphics... a combination of colossal heat production and abysmal cooling systems means three years if you're lucky.

The last thing you want to buy a Laptop for is price!

You get about half the power of a desktop for the same cost.

It's not dragging it around that aggravates the heat death, it's bad airflow due to aesthetic design compromising practical design.

You can get a mini-tower. This one I use at work... it's 10 inches high, 4 inches wide, and 15 inches deep. It's tiny but it's a dual-core, 4gigs of ram with a GeForce G100. I'm pretty sure the case is made out of steel since it's heavy for it's size.
