I say color/colour like "kuh-ler". To me, "colour" looks like it should be said "kuh-loor".

If there weren't any mods watching over this forum... *shudder*

I'm working on Swordfight again! Come tell me what you think!

Us Americans say it like "kul-er". I like the way the British pronounce it much better.

Or just perhaps different sections of Britain pronounce it differently. Geordies say 'Cul er', Londoners say 'col orr' and the Irish just say 'Guinness'. Because they don't know how to say anything else.

Or if you're my Irish nan, "don't drink any of my wine".

LOL. Nothing like fresh ethnocentricism . . . That's okay, because I think most Americans feel the same way about English spellings. For me, meh! As long as it's spelled right in whatever language you're using, hooray!

Anyway, with how much Mods have to do, I'm surprised there isn't some kind of Mod holiday. Or, maybe there is and I just don't know about it. There's a ridiculous number of holidays. :}

Once in a while all the mods pack picnic baskets and go to the beach together. Frolicking may or may not ensue.

Jeku always gets drunk and tries to Moderate the ocean. Tirelessly slapping the waves as they roll in.

To clarify as everyone seems to be posting pronunciations that could be misconstrued into other pronunciations:

color is pronounced kuh-ler
colour looks like it should be pronounced kuh-lure

It would be like the old team request boards... except EVERYWHERE.

[edit] btw, the TGC forums are directly responsible for making me (in the U.S.) spell everything the British way. I've even slipped up and done it in a few college papers lol.

We brits need some of our words just a little bit longer, so that they sound like the US equivalents when we say them at about 120% speed. See if we spelled it 'Color', then it'd be pronounced Colir, with that U - we extend the tail of the word and it's probably the about the same audible length as the US version. I guess you could see that U as a verbal speed-bump.

Brits tend to speak too fast, and the further north you go, the faster we speak. There's nothing funnier than hearing a Scotsman trying to be understood, it's like every word is being nailed up.

I bumped into a drunk Scotsman at a festival a couple of months back, and it was the most indecipherable thing I've ever heard. There were vague references to his brother, and something to do with drugs, but the only bit I actually caught was where he stopped for a bit, looked at my mate's leather jacket, then yelled GREASED LIGHTNING then burst back into his 180mph slurred Scots accent. It was great.

You make a good point, but this bloke was well above the average state of intoxication even for a Scotsman.

No. It looks like "kuh-lure" to us English speakers because of the massive French influence on our language.

We didn't add any letters, you took them out.
If you're talking about "colour" it's spelt that way because it's French.
If you're talking about "audio" it's spelt that way because it's Latin.
That's why English is awesome, we are the children of the entire world!

I can't stand female New York accents, I think they're New York accents, the really whiny ones you hear on TV. They sound more like angry cats than people. I think the american government removed a load of vowels so that New Yorkers have a chance of actually finishing a sentence within a decade. I swear they pronounce at least two vowels for every one.
Again I'm not sure if it's New York, Wherever the endless supply of crap actors come from is where the annoying accents come from.
