Anyone have it? I've got it preordered, and am flippin' pumped for it. I should be picking it op on tuesday.

For those who don't know, Borderlands is an FPS with role-playing elements. The main reason it looks so bloody awesome to me is that fact that there are over 70 million different gun combinations, so you could make a pistol that shoots rockets or silenced shotguns, or whatever.

So, anyone have it? Is it good?

I got it for 360 the day it came out and have been playing through with my friend in split-screen co-op. It's pretty awesome so far. The controls are perfect (because they are EXACTLY CoD4's, which I love), so it feels like an FPS, but it has the leveling, skill trees, and quest system of an RPG. It is definitely made with good co-op in mind though, and it's quite a bit more fun to play with friends than to play alone. It's the first RPG that properly executes split-screen co-op, and it's also the best FPS-RPG hybrid I have played. Granted, it's not perfect, the AI is pretty primitive, and the story is pretty weak, but I think it's pretty clear that those weren't aspects of the game Gearbox focused on. If I had to assign it a number score, I'd give it 9/10.

Oh, also, the cell-shaded graphics are pretty awesome and give the game a unique style.

It looks like a total rip of Fallout 3 to me. Let's see... FPS with RPG elements. Check. Deserts. (Borderlands = Capital Wasteland) Check.

I can't confirm this as video is unwatchable on this internet but comments mention mutants and vaults. Confirm?

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

Pretty sure that the story is fuelled by some fuel running out, or some season on its planet is blossoming and it causes the human race to be wiped out.

P.s. I think you are talking about RAGE that has mutants and stuff in it.

Also the fact it has some many gun combinations won't be that good, I hate the fact actually, as it won't be simple, I'd prefer just to crack out a crowbar and kill, not have a crowbar with a laser and a sticker of Chewbacca on the handle.

The story may sound similar, but the game play is totally different. Theres none of that cheap target aiming business.

I know I'm just joking. It is practically just a run and gun with RPG elements, of what I heard.

As far as I know you can't make the weapons yourself in the game, but you can find them in loot drops.

That makes no sense, as Bordlerlands development started before Fallout 3 was even announced. Also, F3 just came out one year ago, hardly enough time to "rip" them off.

I wasn't referencing your post Deathead It's just I keep seeing people say this is nothing but a Fallout 3 rip-off when it's seriously nothing like Fallout 3.

It's more like a MMORPG Lite. The way it's set up into zones, has drop-in, drop-out gameplay, quest lines etc.

The drop-in/drop-out gameplay is superb... I joined a friend in his game, and after I had finished playing with him and went back to my Single Player game, I had kept all my loot/XP and quests we had completed together. Plus the more people whop play the better the loot that drops.

The guns are incredible, I currently have a sniper rifle which has explosive rounds

My favourite part of the game so far is when a 'midget psycho' fired a shotgun at me and got knocked flat on his back from the recoil

I honestly couldn't care less how much a certain game is similar to another, so long as the gameplay is solid.

EDIT:

No you can't make the weapons yourself... but almost everything drops new weapons so you'll have no shortage of gun to play with

Old thread? Yes, but I've just bought it for the PC and what a great game it is! The 'cartoony' textures are just right for this game and exploding a skag with a high-powered rifle from 100 yards is quite satisfying.

I thought the game lacked alot... It just seemed annoying.. I don't mind a RPG, but the way it was done is just here is a FPS and now you can buy things. Also the gun thing, I thought was un-nessecary, I mean I couldn't careless if my gun has a longer barrel to the other gun I just picked up pretty much identical to it. Yeah sure the game is fun Co-operatively, but even then the game just seemed to be repetitive.

I loved that game. Got all DLCs, beat the crap out of it basically. I love my level 61 soldier, I just have a blast playing it. Shotguns are easily my favorite weapon.

All missions complete, all four characters maxed out to level 61, 70/70 achievements, around 300 hours of playtime, more money than I could ever ask for, every DLC, and I have enjoyed every second of it.

Dunno about Red Dead. Maybe I'll try it, but I need to set some money aside for games at the end of the year. I've got to buy Halo Reach (Legendary edition is very expensive), Fallout New Vegas, and maybe CoD Black Ops if it turns out to be good (after MW2 I've learned not to put too much faith in games with loads of advertising). All in all that could add up to $400.

Same, cept I have only 1 level 61. And I don't think I finished the second DLC.

I thought the second DLC was pretty lame, any one else agree?

I never bothered with mad moxies thingies - I did enjoy the Zombie DLC, and I do like the way they've went with the third DLC.

It's an awesome game though, I'm waiting til I get my projector installed before I start playing it again - I like to play it on a bigggg screen. The annying thing for me is the weapons, too many damn useless weapons - in fact my brother and I have had the same weapons for about 20 levels, we cannot find better. Maybe we'll find better weapons in the latest DLC, only played a little bit of that so far.

Catch a riiiiiiide!

Yeah, General Knoxx is easily the best IMO. 11 more levels, tons of loot...Just overall better. Zombies were good, but they weren't varied or challenging enough IMO to be that good.

Currently a Level 45 with 47/50 achievements (need to use the Hunter's and Siren's special attacks and achieve level 50)...I say 50 because I haven't got the expansions yet. However, I've not played it for quite a while.

I did play it online for a little while, for some reason I enjoyed playing with those between level 10 and 20, some of them don't even realise that at a higher level you can have the ability to heal an ally by shooting them, so they shoot back. Though to me, it's just like a massive sandbox.

The game is pretty addictive, although there's nothing too special about the gameplay, I found it to be really enjoyable. The only annoying thing is, Eridian weapons are next to impossible to find, I've only ever found 2 in the entirety of me playing.

Eridian weapons aren't worth the trouble. They're just rare crappy weapons with a cooldown. Sometimes it's fun to collect them, though.

And about Moxxi's... Man, that had to be the worst DLC I've ever purchased. It added absolutely nothing to the game except for a few achievements which took at least 10 hours to get. Completely boring to the highest extreme.

I used to play online quite a bit. That is, until it started getting flooded with Modders. Infinite shields, 1-hit weapons, game ending class mods, infinite ammo, infinite backpack capacity, infinite skill points, and you'll even see a few level 70's playing around. Just eats away at mah insides because there has not been a single game that I've played recently that doesn't include one of these people. To get a legit game, I have to play with friends, and that's just sad. Good thing the singleplayer is also addictive.

Yup. I never use them. Just collect them.

Agreed. Really stupid. Only upside was I got a place to put all my old Eridian guns while saving space for useful stuff.

Ugh, frikken hate those. I saw a level 255 once. Another time I saw someone who was invisible, challenged me to a duel, and I died instantly. Just...Hate them. Fortunately I don't enjoy online play as much as others do.

I've never played it online, always split screen with my brother, in fact I don't really play online games at all these days - Red Dead will change that though . Recently got Killing Floor on 3 PC's, so we tend to play that more than anything right now, that game is just epic.

Same.I almost always get games for singleplayer. Sadly local co-op (splitscreen) is being phased out in favor of online play. Probably so that they can sell more units.

Haha! So true. But bare in mind that Borderlands not only had a complete style rehaul, they also had to code in all of the game, whereas Fallout 3, just done a complete rehaul on the Construction Kit, so all it took was to make the media, add some story, some voice acting and then BAM! You got yourself a game.

Borderlands uses the UDK, so it's not like they coded the engine from scratch - but anyhoo, we can't surmise what the development cycle was, they are both very different games anyway.

I love them both, but Borderlands has co-op, but Fallout3 has a great storyline, but Borderlands has over twelfty-million weapons, but Fallout3 has great weapons, but Borderlands...

Keep on like that and you'd have an aneurism!.

The bottom line is that if you like Fallout3 then you'll probably like Borderlands, and vice versa - but I would say that Borderlands has a much wider appeal, non-RPG folk are more likely to enjoy Borderlands than Fallout3 I'd say, it's more accesible.

The way they play, well it's opposite ends of the spectrum - Borderlands has quite a lax attitude towards collision detection and accuracy, it's more like an MMO and an old FPS mixed together. Fallout3 is more intense, you have to take your time and be stealthy, usually not a good idea to go in, guns blazing. I couldn't choose between them, they are both vital and unique games IMO.

Oh yeah, but I think that Borderlands is the "mirror image" of FO3. Like so:

FO3 is mostly serious with a little bit of humor
Borderlands is mostly humorous with a little bit of seriousness

FO3 is an RPG with FPS elements
Borderlands is an FPS with RPG elements

Catch my drift? They have similar qualities, but in different quantities.

Yeah, I see what you mean Shadowtroid.

When that guy gets hung early in Borderlands, that really annoyed me, I liked that character - it was like coming home in Call of Juarez all over again . But it's quite unusual to kill off a funny character, kinda threw me a little bit - especially after seeing all those incredibly annoying 'immortal' characters in FO3. At least in Oblivion you can do more permanent damage.

Fallout3 has a different sense of humour, much darker, as with Oblivion - but it's good though, I like the creepy posters and weird locations. With Borderlands the humour is more in the characters themselves, it's blatant compared to Fallout3's morose style.

Yeah, Borderlands is much more slapstick HEY LOOK AT ME MY SKIN JUST EXPLODED type humor. FO3 is much more subtle. Both are funny though.

i still do not see why people keeps on comparing the games, they arent alike at all. sure, there happen to be a vault in both games.

the gameplay, story, enviroment, characters, graphics, everything is just DIFFERENT, so how can they possibly be close to like each other?

Yeah, but then so's Texas, and Texas is nothing like Fallout 3.

Borderlands seems to me to have connections with a lot of things, but its whole wasteland reminds me more of Mad Max than Fallout 3, probably hence some of the mad max references (Mad Moxxi, Mad Mel, Underdome...) but then the game is just full of references everywhere, it's quite fun to spot them. The vault is very different to what it is in Fallout 3, The Vault in Fallout is a shelter, whereas in Borderlands it's referring to a treasure. The only similarity is that it's called a vault, but hey the planet's called Pandora...just like it is in Avatar.
