<=======Program Announcements Thread, download the game!=======>

There's a contest going on right now. If you want to enter you still have... 4 days It's the Indie Game Challenge!!

The grand prize is $100,000 (2 top prizes, one for pro and non-pro). There are lots of other prizes.

My wife mailed my entry this morning. I'm so glad I'm finished, it was ruining my life. My kids are glad it's done too. It's called MetalMorphosis, made with DBP.

I'm going to post the game in Program Announcements in a couple days. I have a few things to fine tune first. I'm pretty happy with it. I've got shadows, PhysX physics, and deformable walls, to name a few. Seriously, if you shoot the walls you punch them in and make holes. That took me a week to get right.

I've been in a cave for a long time working on this. How many other people here entered the contest? Hopefully we have a strong showing. Hope you like it!

Looking great man! I was considering entering until I saw that you had to live in the US so I decided not to, but I thought you lived in Germany?

I'm a US citizen, a US vet, and a US homeowner. A military base is America, after all. Really, I'm just visiting Germany.

@ Cash Curtis II - Can't wait to see your entry! I'm helping the IGC get the word out, and reminding people that the deadline is this Saturday, 10/31.

You remembered to include 10 copies of your game, right?

I'm glad you guys like how it looks.

I did remember the 10 copies That was a bit of a pain. And, two copies of the pitch video.

Did anyone else enter? It was short notice and cost $100 but for the chance at winning $100k it was totally worth it. Even if I don't win I have the chance to invterview with real gamdev companies.

I actually started this game from scratch on 11 Aug. I've been wanting to do it for a while and I finally got a chance to use Enhanced Animations, which is incredible.

@flashing snall -
I didn't notice that exception. I'd have definitely worked that one out, had I seen it.

Thanks Yeah, I lived in Okinawa for a couple years.

I'd also like to put it out there, I've completely abandoned the overhead view I used in GH. I did it in the first place for nostalgic reasons, because Ultima was like that. I haven't met one single person who likes it, though. I'm all alone The biggest dilemma that I'm faced with now are my transparent particle effects. They look like garbage in 3rd person. In an isometric view I could just disable their zdepth and problem solved.

Looks great Cash, good luck!

I think you can disable ZREAD or ZWRITE on an alpha transparent particle to get it looking better, try them both. I'm sure my particles are fine after adding that - I could post up the particle initiate stuff I use, seems very good for alpha transparency.

As for viewpoint, well if you can fix the particles and stuff, I think it would be great to have a few modes, like a top down, maybe top down with a narrow FOV and a slight angle - Auxiliary view is more like the more recent Ultima games. Isometric as well, but true isometric really has to involve that FOV hack, but it is possible to say, recreate Marble Madness quite easily this way. To get perfect 2D style 3D, you have to narrow that FOV and take about a thousand steps back. But my point is that when it comes to adventure games, people should be able to play them in whatever mode they like, 3rd person, first person, Auxiliary, Isometric, top down - whatever works for the game. That's how people fall in love with these games, because it fulfills just one of their wishes, like having that old 45 degree top down view of the classic Ultima game, but in a 3D engine.

Quote: "How the duece did you get destructible walls in dbp?"

IanM deserves more credit than I, his Matrix1 plains make it possible. I laid lightmapped plains over the level's walls. When I shoot one I test for vertex collisions then I push in the appropriate vertices. Behind it, the level walls are textured with bullet ridden concrete. Thanks to Green Gandalf I darken the affected vertices, so I get torn up looking walls without having to retexture. Using IanM's plains, it's very fast. There's practically no slowdown.

Thanks Van B I initially included the overhead 'isometric' view but I disabled it for some reason. I'm sure that reason is obsolete. I definitely want to include multiple game views. I agree, it will help endear my game to players.

I just disabled Zwrite and Zread, it's almost like disabling the Zdepth but not entirely, and I'm really happy with how it looks. I wish I'd done that beforehand. I've done it to all my particle effects. My particles and billboards are the weakest part of my game, maybe they'll download an update? Probably not.

I credited everyone I could in this, every plugin I used, every bit of game media too. And, TGC got several mentions.

Looks absolutely spectacular Cash! The only suggestion I would have would be a first person mode, which I expect would be completely unworkable, but I always have difficulties aiming in 3PS's. Looks brilliant regardless, you deserve to win.

Excellent work Cash Curtis. It looks like this year had quite a few entries from what I've heard. I couldn't believe the game that won last years contest, it was like a Nintendo DS game on pc. Any way, I will hopefully be entering next years contest and best of luck to your game.

Cheers,

Where have you seen all the entires? I see a couple on Youtube but surely that's not it.

I just posted this in 'Program Announcements'. I was hoping to make the Newsletter and have this downloadable first through it but I guess I was too late. There's always next year.

Can anyone suggest gaming sites where posting this wouldn't be considered spam? This is the only forum I've ever really used and I know lots of people here frequent other places. I don't want to spam uninterested communities.

Game Torpedo--it was started by a user on here not too long ago. It's still relatively new but it's worth a shot.

The IGC finalists have been announced! You can check the games and their videos out here and vote for your favorite.

Not only does your vote decide the winner of the Gamer's Choice Award, but it also enters you to win a trip to the G4TV studios in Los Angeles, $1000 in spending money, and an opportunity to meet gaming guru Adam Sessler.

There are some really neat, innovative games in the there. Which one is your favorite?
