Hi everybody

Just wondering, except the fact that hibernate starts up faster, why is hibernate better than shut down, or vice versa.

If hibernate starts up faster, why doesnt everyone use it?

Hibernate requires like 1 gig of hard drive space doesn't it?

Says it requires that amount to hibernate. I always assumed that meant it takes over a gig of hard drive space. That's why I never used it.

Hibernate shuts the computer power off after it saves everything in RAM to the HD.

It doesnt save on electricity bills, Hibernate saves the ram image to the harddrive( i think :S something like that anyways... ) and loads it up faster when you turn it back up.

the 1gb of space taken up is deleted afterwards.

You need as much disk space as you have physical memory - it dumps it to disk.

Hibernate lets you start up where you left off, they both power down completely so power is not an issue.

I hibernate 90% of the time, and shut down when it's convenient. Sometimes you need a restart to clear out the rubbish that's accumulated in memory or is clogging up the OS. Otherwise hibernate would be the best option every time.

I never use hibernate because the computer never stops hibernating until I cut the power completely and restart 5 times or so.

I stopped using hibernate for the brief time that I had Vista on this laptop, mostly because there were processes that kept using more resources the longer the computer was running, and were only reset when the computer was shut off. Now I have 7, but I haven't gotten around to turning it back on. Saves a few gigs of HDD space I guess.

I will live forever or die trying.

I never hibernate or use sleep mode/standby. I don't even shut down Windows properly 99% of the time... I just hit the master power switch on the surge protector under my monitor. Windows still boots up normally almost every time.

Have you enabled it?

Control Panel>(Classic View)Power Options>Hibernate

If it is enabled, then if your running xp, go to shut down as you normally would,
start > turn off computer

then press shift, and standby should change to hibernate

@ grog,

i do that when i cant be bothered

This is fun if the HDD is in the process of modifying system files.

Amusing thing about hibernate under XP is that if you tell it to with a registry setting, it'll hibernate to a RAM disk if it's more than 50% the size of RAM.

Meaning it's lost... the moment the system powers down.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

Strange, I tried that yet I still don't see the option for it. Unless it now hibernates instead of shutting down?

It's not there.

I close all open programs (not counting the ones loaded at startup) so no corruption happens. I really only have problems when my Grandson turns off the computer while I'm occupied with something else like fixing something to eat.

i like the hibernate option. its all i use.
its easier because it requires less effort to activate.
it boots my computer up in a matter of seconds.
i can charge my devices whale my pc is off
and i can leave programs open for the next time i log on.
i don't think ive fully shut down my laptop for... a loong time now.

It reserves the 1GB as long as it's enabled, actually.

I've had nothing but trouble with hibernate mode with every single version of Windows, including Windows 7, everytime I've tried it.

Something always fails to wake up, whether it's my audio card drivers, one of my monitors, certain 3D apps fail, etc.

My computer pretty much stays on 24/7 anyway, unless I know I'm going to be away from it, then I just shut it down.

Probably drivers not restoring hardware to their original state on wake.

One of the reasons I don't use hibernate (other than the fact that Windows needs to shut down periodically ).
