Has anyone been contacted by Hans Olsen or www.indiedeveloperconsulting.com?

These are two separate groups, apparently. They contacted me in reference to an indie game press release for a fee. Does anyone know anything about either? I'm very interested, the only problem is it seems too good to be true, so it probably is.

They made a post not so long ago, which was locked or deleted, put to death.

Really, I doubt they'd actually be doing anything that you couldn't do for yourself - if you don't think so, they're probably lying. We have a saying, 'Take it with a pinch of salt', I think your gut instincts telling you that it's dodgy are probably right.

I mean, does the word Consultancy and Indi really go together? - nope, and they never should. Consultancies and consultants are for idiotic managing directors and top level management - they have to visit a company, and do their best to get rid of anyone who questions or disagree's with them. They have no place in the indi game market - not enough people to oust you see.

Join Gameleon, see how press releases are made by wading through them, then post your own up there.

What exactly are they offering you? Maybe some people on here (who know more about this than I do) would be able to judge what's feasible, what's fantastic and what's empty promises.

I've received one from Hans Olsen a couple of days ago.

He was not that credible:

1) The site points to a blank directory.

2) He promises too much:

3) And to top it all, the last sentence of the email:
Quote: "PS : This is not a mailing list and you will not be contacted again..
This is a personal email from me to you. please do not post this email on a forum. I do not wish to get spammed or bombarded!"

Personally, I am staying away from him/them.

Well, he's offering a press release for whatever I'm doing for $100. He caught me at a good time because I'm actually doing something - I'm about to start pushing MetalMorphosis once I get version 1.3 done (tonight maybe?) hard. I just want as many people to play it as I can get, thus accumulating imaginary credibility and lots of 5's on Youtube.

They do promise an awful lot. The price I listed is for what I'm doing, not the other things on that list.

I've done a good bit of searching, they did a pretty exhaustive Internet press release of their own, getting attention on some non-forum sites.

I know I should do it myself. It sounds like a great deal and the price is right. $100 is nothing. If I could pay that much and save myself the hassle of contacting people that matter then I'm sold. I just don't want to pay for nothing. It's the principle I guess.

I've got their phone number, I'm going to give them a call. If I do decide to do it then it will be a $100 experiment for this whole community. I've spent $100 on worse things.

Press releases don't cost anything

Even if you're paying for them to write it for you - it's silly. They can just pump out a completely garbage press release and put its failure down to "bad luck" and keep your money.

Do it yourself if you really want a press release.

I just had a long conversation with Hans Olsen on the phone. He called me.

He really knows his stuff. I'm going to work with him, what he's offering is better than what I could do. I'll let you all know how it goes. If it goes well then it's a fantastic opportunity for indie game makers. If not then it's a $100 lesson, no big deal anyway.

Later!

I've heard there's another site offering help, maybe you should pay them some cash too - it's something like www.nigerianroyaltygamedevelopment.com

I'd just be careful of getting into any kind of contract. You could find that you have payed him $100 to give him complete rights to your game. When something sounds too good, it ususally is. I don't know if that is the case here. Just be careful!

Yep, seen it first hand and its true. Get rid of people or pigeonhole them somewhere. We had Toyota come in and tell us how to run our squadron, needless to say, fellas like myself who had been 'round the block several hundred times were pigeonholed.

I'm not signing over rights to anything. He's got a lot of real gamedev contacts, basically he's going to contact everyone that he knows and has worked with about the game. I spent a bit of time researching him and he's been involved with lots of games for quite a while, and I talked with him on the phone.

He's drafted the press release and I'm quite happy with it. It's short but still says a lot, I think it will expose my game to a lot of people and generate interest.

Like I said, I'll let everyone know how it goes. If it goes well I won't really need to because everyone will hear about it in one way or another.

In this case it's different. They are consultants in the sense that they provide assistance and information about something they know more about.

Well good luck, I'm still worried about what's in the Hans Olsen email from what was posted up here, but as long as you're careful and read everything through you should be alright.

Doesn't Hans Olsen write fairytales and has been dead for about 200 years!? Oh no that was Hans Christian Andersen, you'll be fine then.

If you want press releases, I can get you in touch with someone who writes around $0.20/word, price negotiable. Shoot me an email if you're interested and I'll get you in touch.

I would definitely advise against getting marketing and promotional advice from a corpse, just as a general rule of thumb. Especially such a mouldy one.

Here is the final version of the press release by Hans Olsen.

I've made the payment, this will likely go out on Monday.

Can a mod delete this thread? I'll make a new one after I have feedback to provide about the press release. Right now this thread has run its course.
