I hope that all who are in the flooded areas are OK.

We're flooded?

Well, I've not checked the news in a while...perhaps I ought to have a look.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091120/ap_on_re_eu/eu_britain_floods

I see - The Lake District, well I hope those trapped are okay and of course, anybody who are effect (and their families and friends).

Reminds me back to when it was Tewkesbury that was the center...which is kind of disturbing as I was on a camping holiday there in the exact same week of the year, but only 2 years earlier.

Theres flooding in this country every year, usually about the same time each year, so i dont really know why people seem so suprised.

The scale of the flooding is unheard of.

I saw it on Fox News here in the US and those reporting on it said it was a 1 in a 1,000 year flood. Well, something like that, not sure of the stat.

You're not the only one who's not sure. I think you'll find a lot of those stats will be revised.

Wasnt it only a year or two ago when there was such savear flooding that there where areas in the UK which where turned into islands? I remember a report which showed flooding near the top of ground floor levels, boats, (as all surrounding roads and bridges where flooded), and boats taking essential supplies like drinking water to these areas.

Every time theres a flood in this country people say its unheard of, but if you go through the facts, it not, its now an anual thing, to the extent I have an argument every year stating this, and no one ever seems to remember the floods from the previous year, it was so bad that insurance companies complained to the goverment that they where suggesting alting all insurance polocies so there would be no cover during floods unless the goverment spent vast amounts on improving flood defences, Or has everyone already forgotted this?

I think you might be exaggerating somewhat. If you can name be 5-10 major floods in the last 10 years. If you get 10, you're not exaggerating at all, though I don't think there's been more than 3 in the last 10 years.

We have this one, the Glouscester one and I am sure there's one more. It is possible than the next flood is larger than the other...so "The scale of the flooding is unheard of" could be quite accurate. Especially if floods on that scale are rare.

Also...I remember the one from 2 years ago, I mentioned it in my first post and INH commented on it.

Yes - flood defenses are built in response to floods, and the Lake District was one of those places that had flood defenses built for it, no doubt to avoid anything like what happened in Gloustershire 2 years ago...but they were useless, the defense ought to have stopped the flood, but it didn't. You could take that as a suggestion for why the flood could be worse than previous ones...after all, the defenses were most likely built in thinking of the scale of floods we could potentially get. If it exceeds expectations, then there's room for people to be surprised.

People know we get floods...some floods provided fun in my childhood...but they're minor ones. Larger floods happen once in a while. Major floods are rare from what I understand.

Weren't the flood defenses placed on a truck and sent up the gridlocked A5 and so didn't arrive?

I was just concerned. The reporting was that this was the worst flood since record keeping started 247 years ago. One person had died and the video shows many homes inundated with water at least a half story if not more. Many many people had to be rescued. So, I pray for the person's family who had died as a result of the flood and for all those who have been devastated because of it. Am I surprised by any catastrophe? No, I'm not; but, I do have compassion to even the slightest bit of human disaster. From what I understand this was in northern England (over 300 miles north of London?).

Hope y'all over there in the UK get things up and running quickly again in the affected areas.

I don't give much credit to mass media either, regardless of what country its from. The internets is just as bad though, unless you can get to a documented case, like first-hand accounts (even thats flaky sometimes), video footage (again, flaky), or in my case where I tend to frequent a lot - the US code, CBO studies, and voting records of politicians. In that case media says one thing, but the records within the government usually say another.

The problem with thier defenses is that its all soft engineering, The goverment will not allow the land to torn up as it is a really nice place. Soft engineering is just building smaller levee's from soil and material from surrounding areas.

Even then thats unheard of due to it being a national park.

Heres a flood plain of the area.

http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/lake_district_docs95/the_lake_district_national_park_flood_risk_assessment_maps-2.pdf

Its similar to the one i used to use but its a little more deatiled than nesscery lol.

I guess it all depends on what is meant by, say, a "once in every 100 years" event. Does that mean anywhere in the UK or any given spot? For example it could be the case that a major flood occurs every year in the UK but always in a different part of the country so any one spot only got flooded once every 100 years. Does anyone know what these terms actually mean? The media in particular are notoriously useless at reporting such notions accurately.

In any case flood "defences" can only protect against a certain amount of flooding. If flooding above a certain level becomes too frequent in a given location then there's ultimately only one rational solution - live somewhere else. Various governments around the world may have to face up to that at some stage and actively intervene in the siting of homes and businesses.

Workington on the coast was pretty drowned, and so was Burneside, which is pretty near to where I live.

Does anyone have advice for getting through floods in Vauxhall Corsa's? Trust me, it gets pretty hairy at times =S

Build up massive amounts of speed before you hit the water, then you'll just simply aquaplane across said water.
