Greetings fellow geeks,

I am writing a research proposal, and I need your help to do a brief survey.
If you respond, then please just answer the three questions with the appropriate letter response.
There is no need for detailed explanations and it will keep the thread cleaner for evaluating the results.
Thanks in advance for your participation…

(1) Do you prefer using automated systems or dealing with humans?
        A) I prefer using an automated system.
        B) I prefer dealing with a live person.
        C) I have no preference.

(2) What is the reason for your preference?
        A) I trust humans more than the machines.
        B) Humans have emotions like me, so they are friendlier than a machine.
        C) No reason, or other.

(3) Do you think more people would like automated systems if they were designed to simulate human emotions?
        A) Yes
        B) No
        C) It would make no difference.

I'm not trying to be fussy, but your survey is too broad.

-If I'm calling the bank about a missing deposit, I want to talk to a real person.
-If I'm calling the theater to get movie times, an automated system will do.

For me at least, it has nothing to do with emotions.. unless I'm angry that my deposit doesn't show up.

Brian.

The general basis of the questions is intentional, and does cover everyone.
1) Either you have a preference, or not.
2) Either you have a reason similar to the first two choices, or not.
3) Either you think simulated emotions would make a difference in user acceptance, or not.

Please, select answers that best reflect your response.
It sounds like you would pick ...
1) C
2) C
3) C

Thank you for your co-operation.

Sometimes I have very specific questions and need specific responses, and because of this, I feel like I waste my time going through an automated system just to get to a real person. Sorry for the detailed answer, but I don't really care about emotions. I care about answers. Like this more specific post.

There's something in this room that makes you can't speak well.

And similar to what xplosys said, none of the options on any of the questions closely resemble my thoughts/opinions. Consider rewriting it. If my answers don't represent my opinion correctly, then what good are my answers to the survey results?

the last two questions had very poor choices, like others i couldn't find an option resembling my thoughts.

When you talk to a machine, to have t follow a menu system which can sometimes take time, whereas when you speak to a person, you can more or less get straight to the point, Whenever i call my bank, i press 0 to get to a person for this reason, 0 Also tends to be a default with the companies i have to call to skip the automated Phone services.

I'll be happy speaking to a Machine when it can tell what im saying, therefore avoiding all the anoying menus, Unfortunatley i fear that wont happen for many many many years.

A
A (but other way around, this answer makes no sense given the one before)
B

Automated systems can't have a bad mood. Humans can. And so the quality of service from a human is very inconsistent, I've found.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home
Air cooled, total cost £160

They give me a general idea of how many people do not like the questions, or have different views other than the ones offered in the available answers.
Again, the questions are general in nature and specific to the topic of the study.
Detailed explanations are not needed at this point, and they will be reserved for future questions based on these answers.
Thank you for your participation.

This is tremendous help for me guys.
I have considered re-writing the questions, but I am not because we already have these participants who have answered them.
I did reduce the answers for question 3 to a simple Yes and No, which should help without corrupting the answers already given.
Thanks to everyone who has answered.

EDIT
I apologize for the poor wording choices for the questions and answers.
This is the first time that I ever conducted a survey, so let me further explain what I am trying to accomplish with these questions...
1) This is pretty obvious, and is an attempt to determine how many people prefer automated systems, how many prefer dealing with people, and how many have no preference.
2) This establishes whether the preference is related to Trust, Human Emotion, or some other reason.
3) This is to determine whether people think simulating human emotions could fill the void (trust, personality, other) that causes the reluctance to use automated systems.

I hope this explanation helps.

Thanks again, and I look forward to more responses.

C - Humans can be faster and more flexible, but machines can be more accurate. Example: activating Windows over the phone. You can read out the numbers fairly quickly to a person, not having to wait for them to say "Great! Please say or type the next group of 6 numbers." in an annoying peppy voice beween all 10-12 groups of numbers. BUT, humans can hear you incorrectly. And when they train people from other countries to talk in an American accent, it can make them even more difficult to understand sometimes.
C - I think people are used to automated systems be now even if they grumble about it, and an "emotional" automated system might enter the uncanny valley and weird people out.
