Hi everyone, I'm having some issues with my computer. Everytime I run a game or 3D application (Blender for example), it shuts down without any error message whatsoever, it just closes the application down. Everything else runs fine, I can browse freely on the web, use GIMP or any other image editing program. But everytime I run a game, it shuts down.

I first suspected the CPU overheating, but when I checked last time a game closed down, the temperature was 31 degrees Celsius. I'm not quite sure if it's a power supply issue since the computer runs completely free from troubles otherwise. It might be a RAM related issue but I'm not sure about that either since I'm having 4GB RAM installed.

My specs:

Windows XP Pro (86x) SP 3
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ (2,49 GHz)
4GB RAM (Though I'm only shown 3,25 due to XP restrictions)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT (1024 MB)

Please share your view on the problem, I'd be very appreciated if you help me solve the problem, thanks.

I'd say its something to do with your graphics card, try updating the drivers.

If it was your CPU overheating your computer would probably just turn off. If it was RAM related the applications should generate some kind of error message about not being able to allocate memory, and windows would complain.

i would first suspect the GPU if it's 3d games/apps causing the problem. do you have any apps/games that have a software rendering option (vs hardware/vid card)? i dunno how fast the apps are shutting down or if you can set it for software render outside the app but worth a try. add here's a shockwave vid that can use various 3d render methods, including software mode. also, check the vid card's temperature, if you can, and maybe dial down it's settings to use less horsepower and see if that makes a difference.

also, how big is your power supply? you could add up your various components and get an idea of how much power you're drawing (and, if close, maybe disable some things to test).

good luck, nackidno!

add: for reference, from Nvidia spec sheet:
Quote: "
Thermal and Power Specs:
Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 105 C
Maximum Graphics Card Power (W) 50 W
Minimum System Power Requirement (W) 350 W
"

@Michael P: Thanks, but actually I updated my drivers just yesterday. The update didn't solve anything. Thanks for your suggestion though!

@Virtual Nomad: Yeah, I should have suspected the graphics card considering the circumstances, hehe. I'll take that in account next time a similar problem arises.

Anyway, as for how fast the apps is closing down, it's a matter of milliseconds, a blink with an eye and the app's closed down. There's no general slowdown after the shut down either.

I tried using that Shockwave app and tested all rendering settings, all worked without any problems. I tried running "The ball", a Unreal 3 Engine game, to check the temperature of the card, I'm using GPU-Z to look this up. I ran the game and it closed down after about a minute. The temperature was at 48 degrees Celsius.

About the power supply, I have 650W power supply.

Thanks for your input Virtual Nomad.

Shouldn't the latest update be in the Graphics card drivers?

have you tried using the nvidia system tools to look at/tweak things? (i think it uses 3d, tho, so might not help? )

I tried using the system tools, and everything looks fine. GPU Usage is at 0% even if I have a game running though.. =/
