Geek Culture / Help with DB Pro Free Version: It doesn't appear to run!

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with DarkBASIC Professional. I've tried asking questions in the actual DBPro board, but nobody responded to any of my questions, so I figured this might be a better idea.

Problems I'm having:

1) The free version of DB Pro does not work. Every time I double-click the icon, the only thing that happens is my cursor will show a background process is happening, and my CPU usage will increase about 20%. If I try to run DB Pro again, my CPU usage will again increase. If I try once more, my CPU usage goes to 100% and then doesn't decrease. I tried running Task Manager to see if DB Pro Free was running and just not showing its window, but it couldn't be found anywhere. I restarted my system and tried once more; again, CPU usage (after three attempts to run the program) was at full 100% and there was nothing I could do to fix it, except restart my system. Does anybody have ANY idea what's causing this?

2) I uninstalled DB Pro Free, and downloaded the trial version. At first I was having a couple of problems, but after I set it to run in XP compatibility mode (service pack 3), everything worked without a hitch. I then experimented with it and disabled compatibility mode and tried running a small program. An error message popped up (screenie attached), but the program still compiled and ran great. I just don't get why if I fun it in XP compatibility mode, I don't get the strange error message? Can anyone please enlighten me as to why this is happening?

My system specs are:

If anybody can please help me figure out why the free version of DBPro won't work on my system while the trial version does, I'd GREATLY appreciate it! Like I said before, I tried asking these questions in the DBPro boards, but nobody responded and the question quickly fell to the bottom (I can't believe how many new posts are made in that board a day!).

Thanks to all who respond!

(BTW, I don't have DB Pro Free installed on my system anymore, I was tired of messing around with it. I'll install it after a bit so that I can try out suggestions people have.)

When you open it all you're opening is the IDE. Use a different one, try CodeSurge or BlueIDE 2. Or, try the original IDE, which is in the installation folder. I never use the new default IDE, which is Synergy.

I'm trying CodeSurge, but for some reason it's having trouble finding the DBPro executable. I go to File>Set DBPro Path...>Local Disk (C: )>Program Files(x86)>The Game Creators>DarkBASIC Professional, and nothing shows up! I even went to the Compiler folder, but again the .exes wouldn't show up. I tried the latest version of CodeSurge, perhaps I should try an earlier release?

If it still doesn't work, where do I find the original DBPro editor? You said it's in the installation folder, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks!

You shouldn't need to set the path in CodeSurge unless somehow it got erased from your registry or wasn't setup properly.

If you do need to set the path manually, it's just looking for the DBP folder, which should be C:\Program Files(x86)\The Game Creators\Dark Basic Professional. It needs the path to your DBP installation, not the actual file.

Edit: Just to clarify, just select the "Dark Basic Professional" folder, and it should work.

Edit 2: Cash, have you ever had a chance to try out any recent updates of CodeSurge on Vista/7? I think I got all the problems fixed it was having. Since you have some of the largest projects of anyone I know, I'm curious how it performs now.

Okay, that works. But when I try to compile it won't run, and that's because I'm not able to put the registration key into DB Pro. Is there a way I can do that from CodeSurge?

BTW hyrichter, CodeSure rocks! It reminds me a bit of Visual Studio.

That's odd. When I tested it, on your first compile, it would ask you for the registration code. You can always run the registration program manually. It's c:\program files(x86)\The Game Creators\Dark Basic Professional\Compiler\TGC Free.exe

Edit: Actually, you'll need to run the TGConline.exe to enter the order key. The other one just registers your email address.

Glad I could help. BTW, I just noticed that the Debug mode in CodeSurge hasn't worked for quite some time. I just posted an update a couple minutes ago.

Glad you like it. I'm not trying to copy Visual Studio, though. For some reason, I've had this incurable desire to create the very best IDE for DBP that one single human can create.

It's really just the file structure on the right of the screen that reminds me of VS. Other than that I think it's a unique editor, and a very good one. I'll download that new version, as I know I'll eventually need to debug.

Again, thanks a lot!

@Coffeecoder - Glad to see that it worked!

@hyrichter - I haven't yet. I didn't want to change IDEs in the middle of a project. I'm going to test it tomorrow, since I'm officially beginning phase 2 of MM. Looking forward to it!

What exactly does the debug mode do? The only difference I noticed is that 'esc' doesn't close the program any more.

Ohh, wait. Now the "DBPro Debugger" popped up the second time. Nevermind then, though I'm not sure how to use that either. *newbie*

I will live forever or die trying.
