I don't know - it doesn't seem to be advertised with it, but on the other hand a lot of things can.

I have a simple 3-step plan for how to find out though
1: Take out any disc in your wii
2: Put a music cd in
3: See if it will play

That's probably the route that I would go down if I was you.

[EDIT]However a quick search of google implies that it needs a little fiddling about with. The first and second results seem to suggest that with some messing about (which probably isn't a good idea unless you know what you're doing) then you'd be able to.

Otherwise I refer you to this:

Basically, no.

No, that would make it a useful device, so no. Damned paperweight.

I have heard that they are planning a movie service channel for the wii (you can rent or buy movies from the channel, and watch them on the wii). For music, you can put songs on an SD card, and then listen to the music on the photo channel, by playing a slideshow and changing the background music to a song on your SD card.

I'm one of the rare few who thinks it's a waste of time to have all the consoles play every single type of file, especially as CD players have been around for over 20 years. Do we really need Nintendo to spend time on that?

Surely it can't be wasting more time than 2-3 days in initial designing... how hard can it be to make a simple mp3 player built into the wii?

The old generation Wiis (Like mine unfortunately) do not play DVDs, but the new ones do. (I'm sure I read somewhere a while ago they were adding DVD playback)

There's a homebrew application to play back DVDs but as far as I can tell no official method.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

I still can't stand wii's as they are incredibly useless, but that does not mean I wont help you out

How is a Wii useless if it plays games? My Wii is far from useless and I have had many hours of enjoyment in front of it with or without friends. Your statement is completely ridiculous.

I wouldn't want to use my Wii (and hated using my 360 up til I recently got a DVD player) to play DVD's. Why wear it out for no reason?

That's a good point, actually - my Wii's DVD drive isn't in good shape as it is and the odd off-balance print on top would probably finish it after an hour or two of films.

So... I guess you should throw away your phone, microwave, toaster, oven, stove, fridge, table, and all your chairs, because they can't play DVDs or CDs. Dang paperweights.

Edit: Almost forgot, your couch, PSP, NDS, gameboy, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, printer, and scanner.

None of those have fully compatible DVD drives which require a (fairly) small piece of software to use. The Wii does. Heck, homebrewers managed it. Or maybe your tables and chairs have DVD drives and you're not telling?

+1

Nintendo could have bumped up the price if they added this function.

Yah, the system plays games. That's all I want it for, and all I need it for. Yes the media is DVD, but that doesn't mean it has to support VideoCD, DivX, MP4, MPG, MP3, etc. does it? Where will it stop? And who doesn't have a DVD player nowadays that wants one? They're like $20 new.

Nintendo would have had to pay an extra tax to the dvd format licence holders to add dvd-playback. Same reason as with the original XBOX you had to buy a seperate plug-in dongle to enable dvd playback.

Just the facts, no comment on the rights/wrongs of leaving it out etc.

Besides, physical media is so 90's

I don't want to start a flame war AT ALL, so please don't, but it's not because the wii can't play DVD's it's just that I never really felt anticipation for a game on the Wii games just sorta pop-out and honestly a good portion of them are not good, however there are some really fun games, but I haven't seen anything new that I would wait for or that is not by Nintendo. Really it's Nintendo they just milk there old games I want some new Mario adventure not more ported stuff like the super Mario wii and ds, or maybe even a actual new character.

On Topic: Click that link that is a way to convert the Wii into a DVD player also

Super Mario Wii is not a port and is certainly worth looking into if you at all liked the classic games... It takes what was awesome about Mario 3 and Super Mario World but makes it 10 times better and allows 4 players simultaneously. I was really skeptical that it could be good when I bought it, I too thought it'd just be beating a dead horse, but it's the best thing since Super Mario 64. Pretty much the definitive party game. And if you want a 'new Mario adventure' what's wrong with Galaxy? It's pretty unique too.
