I was just reading a post on digg. The battle for best game of the decade is raging. They've narrowed it down to: Half-Life 2, Halo 1, SSB Melee, and WoW.
It made me think what I thought the best games of all time were. I'm still trying to decide, but I was wondering what you all thought the best 5 games of the decade are? Then for kicks and giggles, what do you think the best 5 games of all time are?

Rate the games based on how revolutionary they were to use (innovation!) and how much fun the game is the 2nd, 3rd... 100th back. (Like Mario... it's still fun 20 years later!)

I'll be back later with my list when I finally decide

I say Halo 1, because it paved the way for modern, well-designed FPS games on consoles and it's simple yet deep multiplayer experience really got the majority of players into machinima and emergent play. These things existed before, but something about Halo lent itself to this very well and their popularity shot through the roof as a result. It was like the game that wasn't supposed to be social but ended up being the most social game on the Xbox--before Xbox Live was even launched people were trying to play it online with XBConnect.

Half-Life 2 was great, but I feel the glory lies with the mods that were inspired by it and the Steam platform rather than the game itself. That's not to detract from the game itself at all, but when forced to pit it against Halo I tend to pick Halo.

Smash Bros. Melee was also amazing, but it didn't do anything revolutionary really. It was primarily just a kick-a game.

What about Guitar Hero?

I'm not going to make a list or anything. But I do hope that Halo 1 receives game of the decade. I'm going to poke my eyes out of WoW gets it. Internet cocaine does not deserve game of the decade!

Wow...those are the top games? Halo 1...mediocre, Half-Life 2, haven't played it, SSB Melee, much worse than the 64 version, and WoW....never played it. But an MMORPG should not be best game of the decade. It's just wrong...

For a multiplayer game, I would say Allegiance...that game basically invented real online gameplay (back when online play was still experimental) and still is very fun to play. But it came out a year too early to make this list...I would have to say LOTR: The Return of the King is the best single player game EVER. It's original, and the fighting style is amazing. No other single player game competes with it. That's all I can come up with...other than maybe BF1942. It was one of the first shooters with large scale online battles.

Final Fantacy VII(7), Metal Gear Solid, Halo 1, Call Of Duty 4, Guitar Hero.

FF7 was one of the first 3D rpg like games. MGS brought tacticle thinking into games while being really cool.(except for sneaking around in a cardboard box like a bumm) H1 had great AI, graphics and a epic story mode. COD 4 did'nt have much new but had a great multiplayer experiance. GH is like "Dance Revolution" but with a "cool" guitar and no crappy songs.

just tack on Mass Effect, and those are my five nominees.

I don't really play WoW, but I know enough about it from my friends and acquaintances to say that it's pretty epic.

Portal. It actually combined interesting new gameplay with story telling elements not seen in other games (i.e. a sort of 'unreliable narrator' doubling as an antagonist)

Literally every other 'big' game is rehashing (or sequel-ing) something else. Portal isn't - it's fresh AND it's an extremely good game to boot.

I'd agree with Portal, that game just redefined what FPS puzzle games could be like - before that we were collecting no more than 3 different colours of key or keycard - and that was about it.

Most of my friends just don't get it - but in my opinion that makes it all the better, because they don't have to get it - they can like it or lump it... it's a single player game that sucks you in, you really feel like your involved in something, and the climax is about the best I've ever seen in a game. It shouldn't be compared with other FPS games at all, it's a unique and incredible game that defies any genre.

Personally though, if I had to say 1 best game ever - it would have to go to Halo. That made me buy an XBox, and it made me buy a 360 as well. No other game has sold me a console so efficiently. The same day I saw it, I went and bought a controller so I could play too, having all that storyline and gameplay for 2 players just amplifies it.

The Sims came out in 2000, and it's sold more copies than all of the games mentioned so far. I'd say it was the most popular game of the decade.

Yup, it's on every single daughters laptop that I have to fix at work. If there's no Sim's icon, and a Twilight backdrop, then I assume it's a fresh install.

Great game, but I wouldn't say it's a great game of the decade...it's over 10 years old.

I recently nabbed Dragon Age: Origins, I'm having fun with it - I'm running 2 characters side by side - a Elf Mage and a Warrior Noble Dwarf...I feel like I am real D&D geek here now. I'm doing 2 because simply, in these sort of RPGames, you need a good character and an evil character to get different outcomes. My elf is pretty evil. Also on the 360 version, if you're one of the early buyers of Dragon Age, you get 2 DLCs for free - the dragon armour and an extra question...also, the Dragon Armour will be transferable to Mass Effect 2 when it's released. That's pretty cool.

So far, I'd say it's looking to be a game I'd put on my list, alongside:

Bioshock -> Excellent Atmosphere - quite cinematic, a nice approach to FPS gaming
Oblivion -> An improvement on Morrowind (IMO), both games have brought a quite large and open fantasy world, ready for modding. Also, hours upon hours of gameplay.
Final Fantasy X
Star Ocean 4
Lost Odyssey -> An excellent example of storytelling in a game, it's a gem - it uses an old combat system, derived from the original final fantasy games, but it's not too often where people put a lot of thought behind a video game plot.
Fallout 3
Call of Duty 2
Shadow of the Colossus

FF7 was released in 1997, so it wouldn't be in the last 10 years. Hard to imagine since the game's still popular today.

MGS was releaed in 1998, so it doesn't really make the cut either.

Good choices though, just not for this vote

Since when is popular = best though? If anything I'd say those two things are normally mutually exclusive.

1: World of Warcraft, though i dont even play it anymore, it IS realyl a great game though, since its a 5 year old MMORPG. the graphics is fine, the gameplay is great, instances have a great feeling. and all the time i played the game i got that old Warcraft feeling. the story (though next to non existing) is good aswell.
2:F.E.A.R, this is the scariest game i've ever played, played the whole game with a friend (didnt even dare to touch the game when he was goneXD) and we screamed, and hugged each other and had a GREAT time. really an awesome game. multiplayer sucked though =/
3: Diablo 2 (pretty sure this game came after 2000..) this game is a brilliant hack and slash game with lots of great bosses and an really awesome story line. long time since i played it though...
4: Half life2, this FPS is the sequel to the award(?) winning Half life, both of these games are great, but since its 2000+ i cant include half life... anyway, this game has great graphics, an epic storyline and gasmasks! you play as Gordon freeman and you are at a quest to destroy what you created (in the first game, you and some other dudes made an experiment, wich went totally wrong and you by accident let aliens and such into the world) you do this by traveling through out the world and kill combines (aliens(?) with gasmasks) and zombies. the only BAD thing with this game is really that the graphics is pretty much the same everywhere.
5: Warcraft III. this is really one of the best RTS games i have EVER played. it has an really epic storyline with epic bosses and heroes. the strategy in this game is really excellent.

It was really hard for me to think of a good list of games. Compared to the 90's this decade of gaming has been kinda disappointing in the fun sector. Sure, we've made tons of advances on graphics, etc. but the gameplay is overall not as good as last decade (but how do you compete with games like Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Golden Eye, etc?)

5. Zelda: Twilight Princess - I'm just too much of a Zelda fan to not put a Zelda game on here. Not just that, but it was an awesome game. It really cleaned up the mess that was the Wind Waker (didn't mind the graphics, it was just so BORING). The story was cool, that graphics were awesome, the items were loads of fun. This game made me feel like a kid again. Playing the original Zelda games and always wondering what the next castle was going to be. What cool items I haven't found. It was at least as good as OOT, maybe even better.

4. Super Mario Wii - I know it hasn't been out more than a month. But it's amazing. But it's my favorite genre for video games. It is absolutely amazing to me because I never got to learn any of the mario games on my own. I learned all the secrets of the old games from watching my older brother play. Now I get to explore a whole world of mario on my own. On top of that, it was EXTREMELY well made. The multiplayer is absolutely amazing. Being able to play mario with up to 4 people AT THE SAME TIME! I love it. And the way it uses the Wii-mote. The controls are incredible. Having platforms dependant on how you hold the controller and stuff. It feels natural and is amazing.

3. Halo 1 - I'm not the biggest Halo fan, but you have to admit, the game was pretty revolutionary. The single player / co-op mode was really fun, and the death-matches were great fun too.

2. Half-Life 2 - HL2 probably even makes it on my top 5 of all time. The single player for HL2 is hands down the BEST for a FPS. I've never been so immersed in a FPS story before. The graphics are INCREDIBLE. The game play is linear, but they did an amazing job at making you feel like it's NOT linear. The multiplayer will never get old. The weapons are awesome and very well done. It's an amazing game. It will be fun forever.

1. Diablo 2 - This game... is just amazing. It's definitely on my top 5 of all time. After 10 years of playing, it still sucks me back in and is just as fun as the first time I played. The storyline is amazing. The cutscenes are of INCREDIBLE quality for its time. I still look at them today and can't believe how amazing they look. The items/skills/etc are very well made and well balanced.

Sep, how did Star Ocean 4 compare to Star Ocean 3? I picked up SO3 used, and it's a fun game and all, but I'm a little disappointed in the dialogue, and of course the quality of the voice acting is, er, amusing.

Not played the third one...I imagine the voice acting in SO4 is worse...seriously, it's terrible, well especially the female characters - stomach it and you've got yourself a decent game.

Though if you wanted you could mute the voice and have subtitles. I think it's one of these games that would have benefited with the option of having Japanese voices.

i really dont think this game was any good, i didnt get the old zelda feeling (OOT) and putting a wolf in there just made me wanna kill myself. the castles/bosses were too booring and way to easy, the enemys didnt give me an zelda feeling either, except for a few ones. the only time i had this old time zelda feeling was in the beginning, when u were to help the monkeys... i was REALLY dissappointed in this game =/

I would say...

3. Fallout 3 - A lot of hours of gameplay but the scenery was dull after a while
2. GTA IV - Again a lot of stuff to do but also very nice graphics, great physics.
1. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Good graphics, a bunch to do, great replay factor, generally all around awesome.

Well you can't really have a "best" list, as it's entirely subjective. A "popular" list can be done with pure numbers. There is absolutely no point in people making "best of" lists, because no two people are exactly alike. I mean, can someone say what the "best pizza recipe" is? Ask 100 people and they would probably all give different answers. Many people here listed Diablo and I couldn't care less about it, and would actually rate The Sims above it. Best of = lame (IMHO).

Thinking about it, I probably would rate "The Sims" as one of my best games of the decade.
Although the Sims 2 and 3 are incredibly poor compared to the first.

But I think my no.1 would have to go to Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. I had so much fun with that game!

Zero Wing FTW

Seriously though, it is a difficult choice, because in the past decade, games have evolved so much, that each year at least one game brought a significant feature that will be used in every succeeding game. I will vote for portal, because I have beaten it at least 50 times, it still is awesome.

Based solely on the amount of fun I have had playing them, my top 5 would be (I'm counting series as one game):

-Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 & 3 (the first came out in 1999 )
-Age of Empires III (once again, the first two came out in 1999 )
-Dragon Quest V and VIII
-Final Fantasy X
-Super Mario Galaxy

Definitely '98 or '99--- I remember seeing a presentation at my art school by the folks from Relic in '99, discussing the making of Homeworld and how to get a job at their company. Seems like only yesterday

Halo
Halo defined console shooters again, after GoldenEye there hadn't been any well-executed shooter and this one suddenly blew us with an epic story, controls, multiplayer and a green mean killing machine.

Deus Ex
One of those games that defined 'meaningful consequences' in the modern game-industry.

Portal
Maybe the cake was a lie, but the promise of a revolutionary take on the FPS genre wasn't.

World of Warcraft
Succeeded and succeeds at something many have failed at: a persistent MMORPG that keeps challenging players.

The Sims
For realizing there's another market out there.

Assassins Creed II
Assassins Creed was the techdemo that birthed this: a game in which the city is the playground.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2)
If Halo redefined the console shooter, CoD4 and CoD:MW2 perfected it.

1. Mafia - I judge game rating sites by what they say about this game lol. It doesn't look like much now but it's still a charm to play. No game I've ever played has a change of pace like Mafia.
2. Fahrenheit - Totally original and awesome, epic.
3. Fallout 3 - Love the game, love the setting.
4. GTA San Andreas - I spent countless hours playing this, it's the most fun of all the GTA games. When are they going to release a San Andreas stories?
5. FIFA 10 - I spend so much time playing it I have to nominate it. It's like a football RPG now, which is kind of cool. Online play is brilliant.

Jeku has a point; I've never played Halo or Half-Life so they're not on my list. If I played them maybe I'd change my list.
I bet there's a really obscure game none of us have played that's awesome.

Quote: "Resident Evil 4 has garnered significant critical acclaim, averaging a score of 96 on Metacritic.[13] It has received dozens of awards from various organizations and stellar reviews from various video game websites.[47] The game was considered by critics as a top contender for 2005's Game of the Year, and was seen as a successful crossover hit; the new gameplay alterations and immersive style appealed to many not previously familiar with the Resident Evil series.[48] Nintendo Power named it their 2005 Game of the Year, and ranked it number 1 on their list of the "Top 20 Best GameCube Games of All Time" in their 20th anniversary issue.[40] Resident Evil 4 was ranked number 1 on IGN's Top 99 Games of All Time list.[49] The Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine named it the Game of the Year for the PlayStation 2. Game Informer gave both editions of Resident Evil 4 a perfect score, and along ranking number one on their list of "Best GameCube Games of All Time" they named it their 2005 Game of the Year.[21] It tied with Kingdom Hearts II as Famitsu's Game of the Year 2005.[50] Subsequently, Resident Evil 4 was named "Game of the Year" at the 2005 Spike TV Video Game Awards.[51] Also, the G4 TV show X-Play named it the greatest game since the beginning of the series in April 2003. best games of this decade?

cant ignore HL2 series, the best fps i ever played i guess it would be the best fps of the decade (halo might be a classic but its not as awesome as HL2)
also S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series cant really compare it to any other FPS, its one of a kind and very well made. Also the multiplayerin it is wicked fun much better than CS.One of the best games i played.

best RPG would have to be morrowind (the world and atmosphere was really badass and unique with a somewhat mysterious history and backround)
oblivion (a little more happy and colorful than morrowind but the gameplay was somewhat better and the graphics were awesome if morrowind woas made on oblivion engine it would be the best rpg of the decade)

also fallout 3, was one of the best games i ever played the chrecters were unique and made very well compared to oblivion and the postapocalyptic world and atmospherewas just awesome.

in action adventure id have to go with GTA SA and GTA4. GTA SA had ahuge world tons of vehicles and tons of fun stuff to do. GTA4 on the other hand had less vehicles and the area is much smaller it did add to the gameplay a lot of new features which made the world and charecters more believable. also the storyline was much better than in previous GTA games.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

I might have to rent SO4 once I snag myself a 360 to take to school then.

Quote: "4. To devote, give up, or apply habitually to a practice. a. trans. with refl. meaning. (A person addicts his mind, etc., or his tastes addict him.)
1607 TOPSELL Four-footed Beasts (1673) 247 It cannot be..that ever he can addict his mind to grave, serious and profitable business. c1630 JACKSON Creed IV. vi. Wks. III. 68 To addict our best abilities to the service. 1662 FULLER Worthies (1840) III. 195 His genius addicted him to the study of antiquity. 1667 OLDENBURG in Phil. Trans. II. 413 If these men would addict their palats to the pure fountains, and not wander after every poluted stream. 1829 SCOTT Antiq. xvi. 107 The researches to which your taste addicts you.

b. refl. and pass. (A person addicts himself, or is ADDICTED.)
1577 HANMER Anc. Eccles. Hist. (1619) 226 Addicting myself with you vnto the same busines. 1597 SHAKES. 2 Hen. IV, IV. iii. 135 To forsweare thinne Potations, and to addict themselues to Sack. 1611 BIBLE 1 Cor. xvi. 15 They haue addicted themselues to the ministery of the Saints [only occurrence; Wyclif, Rhem. ordained, Tindale, Cranmer appointed, Geneva given]. 1665-9 BOYLE Occas. Refl. (1675) Pref. 34 Addicting themselves..to write Occasional Reflections. 1704 T. HEARNE Duct. Hist. (ed. 3) I. 414 He addicted himself to the Discipline of Pythagoras. 1782 PRIESTLEY Nat. & Rev. Relig. I. 33 Persons who addict themselves to vice..become miserable. 1846 MILL Logic III. xiii. §6 (1868) 339 Such persons..will addict themselves to history or science rather than to creative art.

Hence addicting ppl. a. = ADDICTIVE a.
1939 [see ADDICTIVE a.]. 1965 Listener 23 Sept. 465/1 Lysergic acid..is not addicting. 1970 Nature 22 Aug. 773/2 The use of methadone, a synthetic drug that is addicting..is on the increase in New York. 1984 A. HAILEY Strong Medicine IV. xvi. 397 It was not addicting. Incredibly, adverse reports about its effect were almost nil."

OED says addicting is indeed word.

Half-Life 2 still amazes me when I play it.

I have fond memories of the first Halo, but never owned it.

Gotta be one of those two.

EDIT: Smash Bros Melee aswell? Aww man, I spent days on that awesome game.

Stupid decision making.
