Just recently I decided to take in a stray cat and take care of it. It makes me sad though, because it always runs to the door that leads to outside and meows. It's winter now, and it has no front claws (obviously it was someone elses at some point and something happened). But if it isn't sleeping and sees me walking toward the stairs to go to the main floor in my house, it always follows me and will run to try and catch up.

I know it wouldn't survive out there long so I'm not sure why it is making me feel so bad.

Has anyone had similar experiences? Or any advice on making a stray cat feel at home would be helpful as well.

We had a stray cat at our house one day and on the way to school it got ran over.

No I don't hate cats but,
I would just ask around to see if anyone lost a cat or hang up posters or somthing. Why don't you post a picture of him...her.....it on the forums so we can all AWWWWWWW at it.

I took in a stray cat several winters ago when I found him in my yard. He had frostbite on his ears, and was very friendly. He still loves to go outside, so once a week or so I walk him on a leash. Yes, you can walk cats, just like dogs. Housecats love exploring the yard, and it gives them something to look foreward to.

Here he is in the house, happy, as long as I give him a walk outside every now and then

I've known two people who have taken in strays before. Always the same story, "we're just gonna keep it a week...". Yea right, 2 days later both dropped a litter of kittens on the floor.

The last cat i had use to clime ladders, to get into the loft space, from there he would somehow get under the floorboards in the loft, use to get on my nerves as when i was trying to sleep, all you could ever hear was the cat on the ceiling, then to get back down, he would jump back to the ladders, clime half way down, then jump from there to the banister.

If you'd walk him in a leash a couple of times, he would soon know his way around good enough to find his way "home" to you if let out by himself. You might have to feed him good for a month or so first though, so that he sees it wortwhile to return... I don't know, do you think he has been a housecat before?

My cat is outside (on his own), regardless of season, about 20 - 50% of each day. Always comes back and waits for the door to be opened to be let in, eat, sleep and just lay around being lazy

Edit: Then of course, he is what you would call a tame cat. But I guess yours is too, if he accepts being indoors.

Well he was always coming back since we gave him food. He would wait by the door meowing. Now it's just he waits by the door meowing from the inside.

hmm...try petting it and scratching under its chin, most cats like it. If you feed it long enough, it will know where to go for a meal, but try to be outside with it when you can and watch it. it would also be a good idea to name it, just so you can call it and have it respond.

Eat it.

I could look up a recipe for cat soup, but it's really trivial.

One man, one lawnmower, plenty of angry groundhogs.

I also like cats. I just like making fun of them (it's just too easy sometimes).

some cats have bar codes tattooed in their ear to help identify them and their owner. you should make sure you can't find the original owner of the cat. thats what it is probably looking for.

Well... then just let him out, if he comes back anyway?
You can't expect him to be happy sitting about inside unless he's a 100% indoors cat

A cat that has been allowed to roam outside for a decent period of time won't be happy being stuck inside all the time. Although, the fact that it has no front claws means it's probably safer for it to stay indoors anyway.

If he/she has been de-clawed it belongs to someone and may have got lost (due to the fact that it obviously yearns to get outdoors).
Its the worst thing you can do to a cat is remove its front claws its their first line of defense, still I think your safe to let it out as it seems to have adopted you and if has no home nearby will certainly return, they know where theres food and warmth, two things cats need badly.
If the weathers really bad it wont go out anyway, just wants to check it out first, if it doesnt return then I reckon its went back to its original owner who probably lives nearby and may be frantic at the loss of their cat, I havehad many cats adopt me and would come into my home for a snooze or a feed, they werent lost, just smart, they know a soft touch when they find one.

You shouldn't let cats out of the house. They're not natural to the ecosystem, and will kill birds and other natural wildlife. This is the reason a buddy of mine picks off strays anytime he sees one wondering about.

Hmm... i've never though about that before...

[edit]

found this on a google search:
Quote: "Oh and early man appears to have been primarily hunted by our friend the leopard. So man's main predator is the nocturnal cat, which his why we fear the dark and modern cats dont take no guff."

it was from yahoo answers, so it's not reliable in the least, but it's interesting, and might be worth researching a little bit.

Cats i've had in the past have always liked leaving me surprises, from dead birds in the kitchen, half dead mice, to n one occasion, a dead frog in my shoe, think that as mainly as we had a cat flap, so she could bring anything in at any time.

If you want him to be an indoor cat, don't ever let him out. If I let my cat out once, he will want to keep going out for a week. If I never let him out, he forgets about it and stops trying.

Be firm. It's a test of wills.
