Alright, I've decided to buy a heatsink I have a few questions:

Will it fit on my mobo? I know I need one that's LGA 1366 compatible, but the one I'm looking at seems huge, and I'm not sure it would actually fit on the motherboard.

Is it a good choice? I've looked at a few reviews, forum posts etc, and this one
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8444/cpu-tri-57/Thermalright_Ultra-120_eXtreme-1366_RT_CPU_Heatsink_Socket_LGA_1366.html#blank

is what I'm eying.

As for my current stuff, here is my motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128374&cm_re=Gigabyte_GA-EX58-UD4P-_-13-128-374-_-Product

And what I'm worried about are those two blue things(heatsinks?).

I'm considering just going to a local computer store, finding one of these, measuring it, then measuring my mobo. But if anyone has any advice in general about buying a heatsink, please share it!

Thanks!

Air cooled, total cost £160

I'm using the stock heatsink/fan, and it's been fine, and quiet.

Or are you into the overclocking thing?

Lol, it did however its quite loud and its idling at 50.

I've taken the heatsink off, cleaned it out, reapplied thermal compound and put it back on with little success.

I'm not into the overclocking thing...haven't really had a need for it (yet). But like I said, its idling at 50 and is kind of annoyingly loud.

Must be something wrong... do you have a case fan? Is the side exhaust blocked? I'm using a highly overclocked low-end AMD with all stock hardware (as below) and it's all under recommended temps even on full load. I mean, 19C at 3.9gHz... that's awesome.

Sometimes fans, even when idling slow, will hit the "resonant frequency" of the case. And they'll be as loud as a mofo, because they're vibrating the whole case. Once they start spinning just a little faster or slower, everything will be quieter.

Have you tried squeezing your case in different places to see if you can make it go away? Sometimes just shifting the case slightly will help. Because my stock fan is pretty quiet at least to me.

I have a case fan, and when you say "the side exhaust" do you mean the holes on the side of the case? They aren't blocked...

I recommend a zalman upright, either the 80 or 120mm. Friggin amazing heatsinks. Almost completely silent. My uncle has a zalman upright 80mm copper heatsink with a zalman 400watt PSU and a zalman gpu heatsink (no fan), it's completely silent and has been running great for over a year.

Just read a few reviews, seems quite good. Thanks for the suggestion.

I still have to make sure that the one I buy will fit on the motherboard though...

And if possible lower the temperature/noise that its making with the stock fan before I spend 75 bucks

EDIT: Interesting, using different software is giving me different temperatures...coretemp is giving me stuff in the high 40's while speedfan is giving me temps in the mid-low 30's.
