Black Mesa in Portal is actually a reference to Half-Life 2.

It's more a reference to the original Half-Life. The first Half-Life takes place in Black Mesa; Black Mesa is just kind of mentioned in Half-Life 2.

Really it's a remake of a remake of Half Life - The original Half Life went onto Half Life:Source, and BlackMesa is pushing the remake further with new graphics and effects.

Thing is, can I really be bothered to play through Half Life again... probably not. Personally I don't think there's a real need to redo Half Life, I'd rather see some new ideas inspired by it. Like how about a remake of Duke Nukem 3D or the original Quake. If your gonna remake something, make sure it actually needs remade in the first place.

Duke Nukem Forever? Or was it called Duke Nukem Wait Forever?
If someone remakes the original Quake, gotta have NIN in there somewhere.

Yeah, that would be pretty cool, having Trent remix the original soundtrack, maybe even get some guest artists. What strikes me is that Quake became an engine then any game made with it had to be just like all the other games. Except Half Life, which actually did a lot with the Q2 engine. But my point is that Quake was a very gothic and mysterious shooter. It could be redone and look incredible. I liked Quake2, but Half Life simply owned it left and right. Then Quake3 was entirely different (but great), and Quake4 is not even worth the £5 you can get it for these days.

The original Duke3D, with all those diverse levels, secret bits, traps. There is very little wrong with the gameplay in Duke3D and Quake, it's the visuals that could benefit, and opening these titles up to new players would be cool. I know that Duke3D already has a XBL version, but it's basically a port - a HD mode with better media would have been cool.

That is the dumbest, most retarded post I've ever seen on this forum regarding Half-Life. If this were any other forum you would be flamed to death, accused of trolling and your reputation would fall 99%.

Regarding Quake, I do believe the first 2 are also being recreated on the Source engine by their own seperate teams. Although none of them reach the high standards of Black Mesa - I think Quake Source still uses the original quake textures

Calm down, it's only a game, you don't have to play the Half Life games to enjoy portal.
