Following the free release of dark-basic pro I'm now considering trying a new project to make a game using completely free software.
so ill be using

Programming : Dark Basic Pro (ad-supported version)
3d models: Blender
textures: GIMP
music and sound: Audacity

so what do you think, could I make a commercial quality products using just free software?

Merry Xmas everyone ^^

I said a commercial "quality" product.

I'd say it's very possible to create a commercial quality game using just the software you have specified. Dark Basic Pro can easily create a commercial quality game but you'll need to be one heck of a programmer to do that. The same with Blender and GIMP, it's about the artist and not the software's price. So many people wrongly think that just because they have 3DS MAX and Photoshop that they can automatically create perfect models and textures but they're wrong.

As for Audacity, I use it myself but you can't really create music in it though. For that I suggest you download the free version of FL studio where you can create great music. However, with the free version you can only export music and not save your project. Also, you should browse the forum for some free plugins for DBPro (Sparkey's collision DLL for example). Anyway, good luck with your project and have a Happy Christmas. ^^

One can make commercial quality games with these, yes, but you'll soon find yourself not trying to make this game; you'll be finding yourself just learning how it all works, and working on one project at a time. But have no fear! You will enjoy it!

I don't know about Audacity for music, yes you can record sound effects, but recording live instruments with Audacity and making it sound really good would be difficult.

Which is why you should email me when you want music instead

[/shameless plug]

But yes, it's amazing how many free game creation tools are available now. 6 or 7 years ago, my friends and I dropped $1000 on game development software, which we could now get equivalent tools for free.

You're missing something, I mean the sharing we're not supposed to talk about, the bad kind of free.

I suppose it's not too bad if you're wanting something simple, that is if you have decent equipment, though if you're not looking for quality, you can pick up a mic pretty cheaply, I picked up a boundary mic for about £4 from Maplin to record interviews...the silent bits you could hear are fuzzy, but it's not noticeable with a consistent noise - like with the interview I did in a public place last week. I suppose if you really were a cheapskate, that'd be your option...assuming you had a music instrument, you might go as cheap as making music with your voicebox...which could work in a quirky sort of way, though it couldn't be a serious game.

Hmm...I think I've just had an idea. New project title, "I are Seri0us GAMe!"?

Insert cutting, emotionally traumatizing laughter here.

Audacity is teh se though, Sep, I must agree. But you kind of point out the necessity of extra equipment. I think a better all-in-one solution for music would be something with some good midi editing. Not to say I don't like recording with my friends though, looking forward to meeting up with my combo this winter.

I honestly dont believe you can make a high quality game without shelling out $ somewhere especially where models and artwork are concerned. Purchasing anything that you might need for making your game (models, artwork, music, sequencers, ect) might cost you but if it goes perfect with your project then the end definately justifies the cost and it has the added bonus of saving you time

Anvil studio does free music (midi) sound, so that's your music sorted.

For the music, how about LMMS - http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

It's free, open-source, for Windows & Linux and is a lot like FL Studio. It's supposed to be good.

I've spent around a thousand $$ and have managed to make a sub par game. Which isn't that bad, considering. $$=A Little, $Free$=nothing.

I typed Darkbasic Pro into Youtube and I found this game. I don't know who this guy is (or if he's a member on this forum) but you can't deny that his game is commercially worthy...

Of course, he didn't use free software to make the models and textures but it's still made in Dark Basic Professional so that's pretty amazing.

Edit: Sorry, my bad. I've just realised he is a member on the forum and he's got a WIP thread.
