Hi,
Does anyone know any decent alternatives to GPS?

I am trying to track a number of people in quite a large room for a simulation. I have tried GPS but its not sensitive enough. I did think of using a number of IR cameras with IR LED's and use that but the room has lots of obstacles so it would require lots of cameras fitted which wouldn't really work. Also I wouldn't be able to distinguish between the targets.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Alex

Do you need to be able to identify the individual objects transversing the room or will just a big pile of tracked blobs do? What shape is the room? Is it tall enough that a camera could be mounted on the ceiling and see everything? How is it lit?

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home
Air cooled, total cost £160

Basically I need the X, Y, Z positions of about 6 people in the room. The room is well lit. The positions must be very accurate. The room contains 3 sub rooms.

There's a system called LPS, Local Positioning System.

What sort of range can you get on RFID? I thought that was only close proximity stuff.

On average, about 40 ft, but latest RFID chips could reach over 100ft depending on the density of the surrounding environment. But typical real-life scenarios would be between 40 and 60 ft.

And no I will not be implanted with an RFID tag.

Good choice... I too would like to avoid implanting the mark of the beast.

Where can I buy 3 long range RFID readers? All the ones I look at are for about 1 meter or less.
Thanks

Edit:
This looks what I want: http://www.rfid-radar.com/introduc.html though it is only 0.5meters accurate

There is a russian system called GLANAS which is a gps alternative, not very popular yet but its still new hopefully it will become big in the next few years, they are promising it to be better than GPS.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them
