This is a sequel (I suppose you could call it that) to Wooded Grotto. You play as the same man, and have the same goal: Find your love.

Story: My love weeps tears for me. I can hear her cries, but I cannot find her. I can feel her tears on my skin, but I cannot embrace her. I must find her, I must return to my true love...

Features:
Version of FPSC: v1.16 with PB v1.7
Weapons: None
Voice acting
Multiple levels
Varying and contrasting environments.
A deep and engaging narrative-based story.

I may go back and remake this in X10 once its completed and the competition is over with, but we'll see.

EDIT: The area used for that screenshot is no longer being used. I will update this post later with a newer screen.

EDIT: See above. This screenshot was taken down because the area isn't being used. It didn't match the style of the first one, and I wasn't too fond of it.

It looks really cool, but I have to say that so far it lacks that "something" that your first game had. It doesn't have the surreal, but very stylish look that The Wooded Grotto had. It wasn't the darkest, most forboding looking horror game on the forum and the screens almost looked peaceful - and yet extremely atmospheric (which in my opinion was why it worked so well).

These screens look like your more standard horror game. Brown lighting, ruins and a dark setting. It looks great, but as I said, lacks something.

I know, for some reason, I'm finding x9's lighting system to be harder to work with. I'm gonna try going back in and working the lights around. (Part of the problem is that the plants I'm using seem to block lights, and won't get lit themselves. I was hoping for a jungle theme, but I might just go with a forest theme again.)

The plants are static right? That happens to mee too. When you turn them dynamic, you can see them. But they appear black when static.

Hope this one is as good as the first. I think the original and surreal atmosphere of the Wooded Grotto was what made it so successful.

Thanks, I just got finished making a small area, and I wanted to get everybody's opinion on it before I go any further. This is in a new level entirely. I kept trying to change the old level (that you see above) to match Wooded Grotto's, but I couldn't. I hope this one matches it better.

And here is a second screenie from that.

EDIT: In case you couldn't tell, I'm considering using PB instead of Fenix.

Looks really good, but maybe lower the ambiance a bit? The screenshot looks a little bright.

The ambiance is lowered all the way, so I'll try decreasing the range of the lights.

Make the lights' colours darker; it provides good atmosphere and interesting lighting. Especially good in hallways, like CoZ once said.

Because you have Project Blue you can have a play with the screen shaders such as project blue and motion blur

Sorry for the doublepost.

Here's the first 'real' outdoors area I've worked up. Tell me what you guys think about it.

@PW: I wasn't too fond of making the lights darker. I'm trying to make a unique look here, but there is on more light color I want to try.

Alright, well, I was just looking over the screens, you could submit this for BOTB or even VBOTB, I'm not trying to be nice, this is really good! Although some of the trees' textures look a tad stretched. And trees coming outta the wall is cool, but right where the base of the tree connects with the wall, there should be extra green grunge or something, know what I mean?

Cheers

PW Productions, I think that is a fallen tree. But I am not sure if it's that. Nice screen, really. But only thing I got is, try what it looks like if you make the walls a bit taller. But this looks very nice. Keep it up! I like your light colour in the latest screenie!

Here is the outside area with an additional story. This needed to be done anyways, since you could get to a spot to see the pipes that just abruptly end above the roof, plus you could easily get outside of the map.

I'm gonna start doing these mini-blog posts about developing Wooded Grotto and Sylvan Bliss, mainly because I feel like it and I have alot to share about the subject.

-----

I'm not too shaken by the thought redoing anything in this. The first Wooded Grotto took me about 3 months, and was slightly rushed at the end. The truth is, the voice acting was decided on, and added in almost at the last minute! I'm glad I did, because I have a feeling that it's what won me 1st place.

As for redoing things, there were at least 10 rooms I redid, or cut completely in the first Wooded Grotto. Some were because of performance issues, while others were because something didn't work in the room and it needed to be changed. However, some rooms were cut all together because of uselessness (remember, I wasn't thinking about voice acting when I made the level.) In retrospect, those rooms would've added alot to the re-playability and exploration factors.

The first time you play through, for example, you go through one room and hear one voice clip. The second time, you decide to explore a little more, and go through the second room. You hear a different voice clip that changes, if only slightly, how you look at the story and the conclusion to the story.

There wasn't much of that in Wooded Grotto, unfortunately, but I'm hoping to include some in Sylvan Bliss.

-----

I'm still working on getting a good entity for the green & grunge to make the stumps/trees not look bad coming from the walls/ceiling. I don't have much to say about this area though.

Looks good The landscape looks a little blank though - there are some amazing grass entities in the TGC Store (as a grass pack) which would fit really well in this scene.

@GJ: Thanks I just bought them

@All: Here comes another massive update/blog post, lol.

-----

In the last blog I talked about redoing parts of the level and adding on last minute. This time, I would like to talk about what gave me the idea for Wooded Grotto, but nothing really did. It just came to me while working on the original level I had made. I went back, perfected the lighting (I'd estimate that I change the color/range at least 25 times before I got the final result)., and added in the bushes and brush.

As for the dialog, I had a hard time coming up for the lines. I sat down, and thought of what lines would fit in with the story, while still adding more contrast to it. The search for ones love seemed perfect. I'll wait to give my interpretation of the dialog, but if you guys don't mind I'd like to hear your interpretation. I want to hear what you guys thought the deep meaning (if you thought there was one) of Wooded Grotto is. I'll provide what I was thinking while I was making the lines, and my analysis in retrospect with the next update.

-----

Anyways, here's the screenshot. I need to make a dead/snowy retexture for the grass before it can be added in, but I went in and added the dead trees I bought today (thanks Kravenwolf and Simon Benge). Tell me what you guys think.

Wow cool concept about finding ones love. Never played wooded grotto perhaps I should give it a try. The art style for these games seems to be really great. From judging by the screenshots it seems like the games Wooded Grotto and Sylvan Bliss (cool name) share a surrealistic setting which I think makes it worth testing. I mean so much can be done with surealism it doesn't even have to make sense because it's the players job to work out what everything means in his own head which makes it so much more interesting.

The first line you hear in the Wooded Grotto about the character coming back after several years suggests that the place was emotionally significant to him, and something happened to him there, possibly during his childhood and has become attached to the place in an attempt to restore a feeling of nostalgia. Perhaps the place was once well kept, but after several years of neglect and desertion, it has become overgrown. Maybe the sequence was a dream which has been twisted by his persona and perception of the place. The drowned man could represent how he feels inside himself - lonely and grieving - "drowned his sorrows". I couldn't really understand the other lines, so you'll have to let me know what they are

@Seerzack: Thanks. Wooded Grotto uses x10, so make sure you can run a game made with it. You can reach the thread about it by clicking the image in my sig.

@marc steene: lol, the main lines I was going to talk about were some of the ones you couldn't understand. I really see it as that the place represents him, left alone and driven insane on the inside. He searches for his love as the only memory of happier times that he can see achievable to find. (It's also good to know that people are actually reading those long posts, lol)

Thanks guys. I'll try to get a new screen up soon.

EDIT: I began work on Level 2. There will be 3 levels in this probably. It's not to the point where I would post a screen yet, but its getting there.

Alright, here's an early screenshot of level 2. This level started really empty, and has worked it's way up. Ignore the night-time skybox for now, I might end up changing it. I feel that the lighting needs to be tuned a bit, but this is generally what I'm going for here.

@MD123: Yes, indeed they are. Anyways, I'm sorry that this has been dead recently. (I had some trouble testing level 2 after I had just done some work on it, but I found the solution after searching the bug reports forum). Anyways, this project is not dead, and I'm working hard on it. Here's a little preview for level 2. (note: the wall won't end there, it will be a corner. I haven't added that area on yet, because I'm still fine-tuning the first two areas for this level.)

The Wooded Grotto is one of the few FPSC games (X10 or otherwise) that actually left me wanting more and the graphics were pretty good... Looking great Coach Shogun, really hope you do an X10 version as well if only for the great use of normal/specular maps
(or better yet do it Unity, the game i was going to make for the comp is now being done in Unity and I'm quite happy with it so far)

@Jingle: A game like Wooded Grotto would be nice (and fairly easy) for my first Unity game. Minimal scripting would be required (haven't had too much time to sit down and do tutorials.) I'll consider that. I hadn't thought about it much before. Glad you like it.

I actually don't have either enabled right now I think. The bloom was far too strong, IMO. Do you know how to reduce it. I couldn't find it any where in the manuals (plus, I still need to download v1.8.

Update: I'm actually not feeling too motivated to finish this. I'm starting to see that I should have just left Wooded Grotto where it was, and made something completely different for FPNS. However, I'm not going to let this die, but I think that I'm just going to focus on level 1, and forget about level 2.
