Well good evening gents!
I am wondering what different software you prefer in the different catagories.

Programming Language,
3D Modeling,
Textures,
Sky/Scenary,
Sound Effects,
(EDIT) Animation/Frames

I would like to thank you for spending your time on helping me out!

Heres My Answers

In case you hadn't noticed, All the software i've listed here is all available for free, infact, the only one in the list i have spent money on is DarkBasic for things like Plugins, not that im a cheap guy, but i dont make money of any of this, so i dont see why i should spend large amounts on it, But im sure some people will mention a few heavenly overprices items like Max or Maya.

I did manage to get an old copy of maya once with a few Pixar Plugins for things like adding fur to an object, but you really needed a mainframe to run it, it was an excellent program, but if you wanted to buy maya now, it would proberbley cost you a small fortune, I'd say stick to the free programs to learn, and Only buy when essential.

Frames Probably means Object Animation

I'm gonna change up the format, and now my post is longer, muahahah!

Programming Language
Visual Studio Professional for XNA stuff (I love you, Dreamspark), DBPro for quick prototypes, DarkGDK if I want to do something fancier, and Netbeans for Java and GNU-C++.

3D Modeling
TrueSpace 3.2 and Blender. GameSpace's .X exporter never worked as well as TrueSpace3.2's did. DBC hated the GameSpace models for some reason.

Textures
Turbosquid ftw

Sky/Scenery
Turbosquid

Sound Effects
Pro Tools, Audacity, Soundtrack Pro(Logic Studio)

Frames
??? I'll just list all my favorite 2d painting programs:
The GIMP, Paint.NET, Seashore (for Mac), and of course mspaint

Sorry about the confusion of frames up there. What I meant is the softwhere you use for object animation. I had a brain freeze and couldn't think of the phrase so I just said frames, becuase you have frames in them (I think). Thanks a lot for your answers so far!

Ah, frames. I've never used objects with animation in them (at least yet), so that question still doesn't quite apply to me. But it will soon!

Agreed that Blender has a horrendous UI. They've released an updated version with a more customizable interface (called Blender 2.5.0 Alpha), but it's still immensely complicated.

I don't know... It's definitely complicated, but I think it's a case of easy to use, difficult to master - it takes a lot of learning but once you've got it it's dead easy and well worth the effort.

Whilst everyone with a shred of sanity and/or knowledge of interface design believes it to be difficult to use, difficult to master. I mean, seriously, why did they think it a good idea to put the face/vert/edge section in edit mode on ctrl+tab? Any suggestions? Does it follow any standard UI concepts, conventions or strategies? Is it obvious at all?

Meh, I've always loved Blender's GUI--and I'd like to think I have a shred of sanity left.

Maybe Oracle designed the interface?

I found something earlier today I just had to share. You can use OpenGL with the BF language now.

No... but it's the button I press most and it's much faster than having to press a button on the toolbar.

That's what shortcut keys are for, no mousey clicky here. Which is why I hate this new DBP editor, no shortcut key for anything, even save. Very annoying, especially when we know adding that functionality is like 1 line of code. (at least in java anyway)

I think the biggest problem behind blender is that it's almost exclusively short cut based - e to extrude, r to rotate etc, and it's impossible to actually find out the short cuts without looking in the help files etc... or the internet as Phael just pointed out.

lol ^^. I love arguments so I'm joining in. Since blender is difficult to use/master or whatever than doesn't that mean that it is a good if not one of the better modeling softwares? I've used only wings 3d for the short time and it's really simple. I recommend it to all beginners. I'm switching over to blender and it seems like a really powerful program. uhh noob question, What does the UI stated above mean ?

User interface.

And yes, Blender is easily the most powerful free 3D editor out there.

Buttons are good, but they should SUPPLEMENT an interface which can be navigated without a manual, not DEFINE it entirely. And they should be obvious. Ctrl+E for edge, etc. would be nice. I mean, that makes sense doesn't it? Ctrl+Tab is completely inexplicable. How does this relate to changing edit mode? It just doesn't. It's good software, I'll give it that. Completely free, expandable and really quite powerful. But you can't say the interface is up to scratch, let alone superior.

That said, I don't think any 3D modeller in existence has an interface that's comprehensible without an A3 spread with hotkeys on it and a manual. Maya's just as bad in some ways when it comes to the cryptic little symbols that adourn the top bar.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

I think part of the problem in designing the interface for a 3D program is vast number of controls that need to be implemented. I remember the first time I used studio max, I was overwhelmed. But after using it for a month with lots of tutorials, I got used to it to where I know find it very simple to use. Most software doesn't have to accommodate so much in the UI, so I think that's what makes it feel so complex right from the start.

I agree. It's sort of like when you have a button cammand like Ctrl+T you open a tab, but if you want a button cammand for tools you can't do Ctrl+T.
