I know, I had never thought I would say this, but I love windows vista. I got an Xbox 360 Elite console for christmas, and i love it, and I wanted to go on Xbox live.

Well, I wasn't going to dish out £50 for a wireless adapter, and a giant ethernet cable running through my house is less than welcome, so I had a thought, use my laptop

However, upon plugging the crossover cable into both my XP laptop and my Xbox, and sharing the wireless connection, i found that it did not work I even tried bridging and all sorts. So i booted up my vista laptop, and it worked straight away I can even stream music and videos directly from my laptop, as its always plugged into my Xbox, because I'm always on it So essentially, I have a 220gb harddrive

I just thought I'd give Vista a bit of credit

Welcome to the future. We have Windows 7 here. It's like Vista, but good.

I know that windows 7 is here.
I don't have it.
I feel Vista deserves some credit.

Funny, my Eee 701 manages this fine on the rare occasion that I actually want my 360 connected.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home
Air cooled, total cost £160

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw how much the xbox wireless adapter is but I think the reason is that while gaming packet loss is very bad, so the packet loss on the xbox wireless adapter must be much less than a standard PC adapter.

I must be the only person in the entire world satisfied by XP, Vista and 7.

XP and 7 FTW, but Vista gave me nightmares. I only ever used it on my grandma's laptop, but I quickly learned why she never used the laptop. Vista was slow as heck on that computer, which had like 3 GBs of RAM, a 2.2 GHz processor and a decent hard drive size (like 160GB+). I did some maintenance on it and quickly learned to hate Vista. That's why I waited until 7 came out to actually purchase a laptop.

I origionally hated vista and would burn any machine i saw running it within a 20 mile radius, but as i used it more, and more updates came it slowly became usable and is quite okay right now. It is infact quite fast and i only have 2 gigs of ram and 2.1ghtz single core processor. Although i have to admit when i used the win 7 RC it was a massive improvment.

The only difference affecting the 360 is that Vista has media centre included - Microsoft don't support media centre on XP beyond the special media centre version of XP ( = cut down XP ) - otherwise it would work just the same.

This is after an update, about a year ago I could connect a 360 to my XP Pro PC's shared storage easily.

So although it's fair play to Vista for providing that feature, it's choke and die for anyone who's using XP - thanks microsoft. See it's typical, Microsoft are happy to remove features when it benefits the sale of one of their products, to the point of stupidity.

Plenty of people have used Vista and not had a problem. The only sluggishness I experienced in the 2 years that I used it was when I had a whole lot of folders open, and the window animations started to run slowly.

Transitioning from Vista to W7, I barely noticed a difference. I guess my PC is pretty high-end though.

i liking your styling

Seriously, anyone who hates on Vista without giving a reason is just ignorant and has some sort of problem where they need to agree blindly to the mainstream audience.

Ahh thats for that, but what i mean, is like when you download a program, and run the installer, it asks you if you want to run it 3 times

Yup, I was like that until I realized what I was doing. Then I tried out Vista on my own and while it had its great ideas, there were a few things about it that just didn't work quite right. Speed, for example, was pretty horrendous, and the fact that MS switched things around a lot (where the heck is the control panel again?!) and removed the visual representations of fragmented files were just a few things. Internet connectivity sucked as well. But it was a pretty UI, I'll give it that.

I never had any problems with Vista--funny thing is, it's almost identical to 7, minus some snazzy features, and poor marketing. . Vista always ran smoothly, and as soon as UAC was off, I didn't get any "nagging". I liked it almost as much as Windows 7.

Ive been on Vista for over a year now, came with my laptop. I dont have any complaints, and I push this thing to the limits. 3DS Max, Photoshop, ZBrush, MSN, a bunch of internet tabs, and a mismatch of random folders / DBP can almost always be found running all at the same time on my laptop, and everything runs smoothly. No annoying popup messages other than a few security alerts here and there when installing certain software. If anything the annoying popups come from HP trying to install updates or asking me to perform unneeded system scans, but Im sure I can disable them, just not bothered enough to look into it.

Im sure W7 is a lot better, especially in terms of speed, but for the time being Im perfectly content with Vista. The only annoying part of my laptop is the fact that dust got on the inside of the screen and isnt covered by HP's warranty. Basically a huge smudge in the middle of the screen on the inside. I've gotten used to it now though.

I had no idea that I could connect my laptop to my XBox though. Thats awesome, as XBox wasn't able to find my laptop on the wireless network before. Now I can finally get my music on there.

Well, like i said, my XP laptop would not share the internet connection with my xbox, but my Vista laptop did also, i can share my music etc...

Vista after SP1 was pretty good. At launch it was a nightmare beyond belief.

Still loves me the Windows 7 from day one though.

Not to offend anyone here, but I can't believe how many people are still using XP. After using 7 for over two months, I can't go back to using such an outdated OS. You don't realize how outdated XP truly is until you use 7. I'm not talking about just pretty graphics, I mean in general. Things are a lot faster in 7, navigation through folders and such is easier thanks to the Libraries system and optimized search engine, and pretty much anything else you can think of; it's all been improved and works great!

But if you still prefer to run an almost decade-old operating system that's okay (and I understand the hesitation), it just surprises me is all.

I don't know (yet) how good Windows 7 runs or feels, but one off these days (probably months) i'll give it a try. Not that i've had any problems with XP or Vista do. Every 2 years or so, i buy a new machine and follow the progress. They both where and still are good operating systems. The problem with annoying bugs will always be there, no matter wich OS. It's all about business and money, so whenever MS reaches their deadline for selling their product, they WILL sell it, no matter if there's still plenty of bugs in it. They gain when selling the product, and when there are updates. Time is money, as they say...
