I want to start off making 2D games, so which one is the cheapest? You can reply here, but it would be cooler if you email me at mercenary@mail.com

I want to make 2D games, like the old Mega Mans or the old Final Fantasys, and I was wondering what the cheapest program there is for making them. I just want to make one in 2D, then let my friend play it and have him tell me what he thinks, than I would probably make it in 3D if he liked it.

You got MS Paint on your computer?
Use it.
Anything better costs money I'm sure you dont have.
So either use MS Paint, or program your own paint tool.

...

Sorry for being so serious, but I'm irritated at the moment.

Again I have to say you are not very clear, but its better than your first post.

If you mean Art program, yes MS paint is the cheapest (cheap as free), but your game will probabaly look very assey (excuse my french). I would RECOMMEND (*cough***cough*) photoshop though.

If you mean Programming launguage Dark Basic Classic would be respectivly cheap. I would RECOMMEND (*ahhhem*) Dark basic pro though. Its not that much more expensive

Try Pixia, it's free and has a more art oriented feel to it than MS Paint.

Hmm Paint shop pro is quite cheap, and if you can get Corel Draw 8, it is about 10 years old, that will be very cheap also. Corel Draw 8 is excellent!

Personnaly, I make crap in Paint, then enhance it in PhotoImpression for it to become Super Crap! Thats why I'm practicing 3D modeling, I much better at it then 2D.

try Adventure Game Studio (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk). It's a really good free program, and you don't have to learn scripting to do the basic stuff.

But is it as powerful as DB o_O With DBP you can do ANYTHING as long as you learn "da codes" (heh, couldnt help myself) It is a programming language, thus, anything is possible.

I use Illustrator 7, Photoshop 5 and sometimes MSPaint for my images. but best bet if you want a sprite then just use MSPaint, it may not support all the other stuff but at least it fast and easy to use, You near enough need a degree in using Illustrator. lol.

Man, I used to love making crap myself. I'd take the brown brush and have at it. Then I'd have all terds bounce around the screen and turn off the "refreash rate" to have them smear all over my monitor. You could almost smell the aroma contaminating my sisters room. MAN YOU ARE SO FULL OF IT TODAY MAN - in a hilariously cool way.

ive downloaded a program called pmotion from cosmigo. it looks and feels like the classic dpaint for the amiga. i find it excellent for 2d images using 256 colour pallete. it allows for animating, onion skinng, brush effects, grid set ups.
I can thoroughly recommend this program for all 2d work

I just started using VicMan's Photo Editor, it seems simular to some of the other photo programs I have used, but its only a freeware version, so they dont let you use any pictures larger than 1000x1000 pixils... but I dont care, I can just split pictures larger than that, and I dont do pictures larger than that any ways...

Sorry I rambled on to long.

You want to create games that have that special 2D retro feeling then I think that using Photoshop and such to make the media are not the best programs for that task. I mean Photoshop is a very good program but it's hard to get the 2D retro style. Photoshop is good for more good looking realistic things. Use iDraw a very good program to make pixel images in. You can ad across and down values so you can see were to paint you characters animations. MS paint is hard to get the feeling to it but you can if you know how to use it right. but with iDraw there allmost impossible to make an image that doesn't look retro.

Edit: Link to download

Size: 592k

It suppports formats like .bmp and .png if I remeber right. It was a long time since I used it but it's a really great freeware program.

Err, what is the problem in Photoshop?
For pixel art, use pencil instead of brush. No antialising and it's pixel perfect. Then just zoom up to level you want and keep the info window on... you'll see the x/y there. (if that's what you meant)

For programming language, PlayBasic (by uwdesign) seems to be interesting. It's not done yet, though. But still... it's targeted for lower spec 2d game. (you can create games with only dx1 requirement!)
