Hello fellow TGC forum,

I recently purchased a 160GB hard drive replacement for my PS3. I read an article on GamePro about how to install the new hard drive, but I am unsure of how to copy the information over so that I can put it on the new Hard Drive. I tried using my 4GB flash drive to transfer the files, but the PS3 said I need to have atleast 26GB hard drive to transfer the files.

Alright, I head to my local PC shop and pick up a 320GB external hard drive. I try to get the files transfered onto the hard drive, but the PS3 doesn't read the External hard drive. So, I google the problem and find out I need to install fat32 format onto the external hard drive. I do it and overwrite the original software settings on the hard drive and reconnect it to the PS3. Dang, the PS3 still doesn't recognize the PS3. Any ideas, help would be greatly appreciated?

No, I don't have a double sided USB cable unforunately. I wish I did, but I was looking at them on the internet and for a double sided USB cable that is afforadble I would have to order it from Hong Kong or somewhere like that. I have found an article on the internet about using an Ethernet cable to transfer Game Data Saves from one PS3 to another. Has anyone ever tried this before?

Thanks,

Not possible. USB spec states that there must be a server and a client. If you run a USB cable from one machine to the other without anything inbetween they'll both supply power and try and be the server and either blow each others' power supplies or it'll just not work.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home
Air cooled, total cost £160

How would they both supply power Nex if they are connected to each other? Man, blowing a PS3 sounds bad, I hope I can get the Ethernet cable to work.

A USB port supplies 5V at a varying ampage. There's no specified way to connect this to another USB port. And no specified way to receive 5V through USB. So the result is unspecified and will probably vary. Some systems might be fine, others will have power supply problems.

There's only one type of USB. Server-client. That's the design.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

so for a ps3 controller, the ps3 is the server, and the controller is the client?

thats interesting, tyvm.

That would be correct.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

i have a question actually

my external hard drive has its own power, it uses a usb cable to connect to my pc, which obviously has its own power.

how does that work?

The controller that connects the hard drive to your PC will be powered by the USB port and the hard drive will be powered by the power brick.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home
