I don't scare easily, but I confess there is one thing that bothers me, spiders

I used to get the same recuring symbol in some of the dreams I remember, a large red knee tarantula, in some dreams it was on the wall, others on the floor, but there somewhere. But for several years I haven't seen the thing anywhere in my dreams, I thought I was over it, until last night. In this dream I was out in the garden just standing and looking around, nothing was happening, everything looked familiar, but then, there it was crawling over the fence, larger than life. As soon as I saw this ugly thing I awoke, which is bloody annoying because that's how you remember your dreams, by waking up in the middle of them.

...and I know why it's there

Soon after I started school our class would do the classic thing and take a day trip to the zoo. After we spent a couple of hours looking at a few monkeys, a couple of lions and one panda, we all stopped at the insect house to have lunch, another classic thing to do. While we where there eating surrounded by glass cages full of "things", three keepers where going around showing us a few of the creepy crawlies they had, one guy had a large stick insect on his arm, another had a large beetle type thing on the back of her hand, while the last guy had the tarantula sitting in the palm of his hand. When he came over, something made this tarantula twitch sideways and fall off... into my lap... upside down... wriggling like mad trying to upright it'self.

(shudders)

Bear in mind that when your five years old everything seems larger than it realy is, and this bloody thing looked like it was the size of a dinner plate

I don't remember anything at all between seeing it on my lap and being outside in the rain screaming my head off. Ever since then I haven't been fond of spiders above a certain size, not fond of them at all.

So, I ask you. What scares you? And please, no Micheal Jackson jokes

Hmmm, Night Terror. It's a sleeping disorter, kinda like a nightmare but far worse. My Night Terror is horrable, countless abstract images, sounds, tastes flooding my sences. What's worse is they keep going on after I'm a wake. I've accually got up a walk a round for a while before I relized I was awake. I've had them as far back as I can remember (1 or 2 yrs old), but lucky I only get it once a year or so.

@Arrow: Night terror, I've seen a documentery on that, very upsetting for sufferers. You're lucky in a way that you only get it once a year, some of these poor people get it every night.

I also don't like spiders. Alot of bugs actually. Not like ants, like beatles and centipides. I'm also afraid of posion and germs.
Come to think of it, I have alot of fears.

Heres a cool website of fears.

Ive suffered night terrors since I was 5, 25 years of hell. Ive given girlfriends black eyes, broken ribs, bruises when thrashing in the night. About 3 months ago I put my hand through the wall.

Ive seen sleep physcologists, and a few other doctors, they have tried meds but nothing.

There's one thing that scares me more than anything else - stupidity. As in the stupidity that makes idiot football thugs beat each other up! Or the idiots who mug old ladies for a few quid change. The stupidity of humans is more scarey than anything else out there imho.

Agreed. A movie such as Scream doesn't scare me alone but the fact that there are idiots out there who might copy what happens in the movie and go out and do it themselves is quite a frightening thought.

I hate spiders too ... there was this huge one hiding behind my bed. It was 2 inches long, had thick sort of furry legs and could run at turbo speed ... took a while to get him, had to use the vaccum cleaner .... I don't mind ants, beetles but cant stand things like those fat millipides/centipides, snakes or those thin long insects (huge locusts, grasshoppers euuuugh).

I guess these fears begin in young age mostly due to some freak experiance or something e.g. my bro is scared of heights but I'm not.

Rich - Agreed

Basically nothing scares me I think, I seem to be pretty void of any emotion along those lines, no animals, heights, etc. and I deal with pain pretty well too, so its mostly psychological stuff, but thats more being worried about something than being terrified

Although something DID scare me the other day, I was in the Weymouth sea life centre with my children and we were in a large shedlike building with "claws" written on the side, so I was expecting big crabs or lobsters... What I didn't expect however were the crabs to be 6foot tall Japanese fighting crabs (They can grow to 12 foot!) The speed those things moved with gave me the feeling that if they ever ventured out of the water (as crabs often do) you REALLY wouldn't want to be near one!

[edit] I have just tried and failed to find a picture of one, but I did find this interesting little true story

i often have nightmares, but when i sleep im semi concious so i can mostly control my dreams to make them less harsh, caus eit messes with my body (ie sweats, irregular heart beat, short breath etc). But most of them seem to be on the same subject, survival horror. Like resident evil etc, city where i live overrun with zombies, infected crazy people (ala 28 days later) and all those sorts of things and my nightmares are what i would do in that ituation, like wher ein my house i would barricade to have the safest area etc, and depending on where im sleeping the quickest route to my replica katana thingy or the large kitchen knives. as for spiders yeah i get chills when i see those huge tarantula spiders that are like 15 inches long, the ones with the really long legs and pretty big bodies, they live in these caves in the amazon i think, saw them on tv once. but smaller ones like daddy long legs i dont mind, and games like exile 2 where you find the friendly spider nest help too, "I have big pediphalps!" is a quote that springs to mind. I'm yet to have a dream where im in a survival horror situation and use my pirate skills to get out of it, guess im in for on etonight

Yes, I have the same strange phenomena as Robx in the sense that if I have "Nightmares" I realise subconciously pretty early on that I'm dreaming and its not real. I can often control what happens and certainly don't find it scary as I'm constantly thinking "This isn't actually happenning" lol

The only dreams I have that I hate are annoying rather than scary, I dream I've woken up. Then I dream I've woken up. Then I dream I've woken up etc. So when I finally do wake up, its difficult to establish whether I am awake or not

i have those night terror things about twice a week - crawly things crawl all over me and get in my mouth. i wake up but i still in dream world i slap on the bedcovers to kill them and spit franticaly to get them out of my mouth. then slowly i return to reality (about 10-20 seconds) and realise i must look real stupid. my wife says it looks real funny. funny thing is i aint scared of crawly things.

the scariest thing i can imagine is waking up in your coffin - i gonna be cremated.

I don't mind spiders there are a few about the room now. With so many people scared of spiders it's a good thing not to be

The things I am scared of.
Being buried alive.
Anthing alive flying at my face.
Falling on spikes/metal poles/sticks and being impailed.

I hate it when I am dreaming and I start to wake up. I start to determine what happens too much and ruin an otherwise good dream.

I lived in a rainforest setting from age 2 to about 9 so they were abundant.
Im a forest or bush kid at heart but live in the city now.

A birdspider catches finches or sparrows I guess I looked like lunch or it jumped on me as i went through the web.
green tree frogs croaking in the toilet until u flushed them away.
red belly black snakes lurking in the rock wall crevaces.
possums fighting on the corregated iron roof.
bush turkeys chasing the dogs away from the nests.
kookaburras getting a cheap feed with the mince we would leave out.
We had a dubious relationship with a carpet python as well until he got run over by some hoons.

everything is mostly deadly here but you kinda get used to it, plus most of the real deadly stuff is not in the cities. Granted there is a few things like the sydney trapdoor spider and redbacks etc..

what scares me the most is the white tip wolf spiders here. The bite rots the flesh and keeps rotting it unless you have a large biopsy and even then its not guaranteed.
My flatmate got bit stepping out of the shower in queensland and it was touch n go for 6 months.

I get all 4 emotions over that. I get pissed sometimes, scared quite a few times, sometime it can be funny, but mostly it just makes me sad.

I can cope with nearly any kinda dream. I've been in car crashed, fought in wars, tactled brain eating aliens, even battled Darth Vader (hey, I was 10). In those situations I had no other choice to face my fears, so I confronted them. Sometimes I was victorous over my dreamy foes other times I wasn't. However none of it could ever help with my night terror. I'm not the kind that gets physical, I get the really bad dreams. Even after I awake it still goings on, like I never even woke up. There is no way to explain it other that it's a very intence fear. It's can't be explained other than abstract, parts are kinda like looking at something very very close to your face but you can also see it as if it were miles away all at the same time. It really mixes up your sences.

Spiders, mainly.

I actually scare rather easily. I don't watch horror movies much (IMO they're a waste of time) so I haven't got much of a 'shock resistance' as such. Spiders totally flip me out, however... I don't mind ants, beetles, or many other creepy things, but spiders...

Can any arachnophobes here tell me exactly what makes spiders so scary to them. Obviously poisonous tarantulas scare most people, but I've seen a tiny harmless spider frighten the life out of a fully grown adult. Is it something about the shape or the movement?

I used to think spiders scared me and then I realised its not actually fear. It's discust. Fear is your reaction when someone is coming for you with a knife. I can liken my reaction to spiders to someone coming for me with a shovel full of dog crap. I'm afraid I'm not a "spider out the window" type of person either. I'm a "stamp on the bastard again and again and again and again until its undoubtedly 100% dead" type of person. My theory is that, most spiders in your house are common house spiders (in the uk anyway), so if you put them outside, the bastards could well make their way back inside again. So the best option is to terminate them with extreme prejudice.

Only thing that actually scares me is Paradox drum'n'bass events. War zones, they are. Especially sinse nobody takes Es anymore. At least they were happy when they were pilled up. Now they're more likely to take knives.

Edit: Ooops. Made myself sound like a drug abuser then. hehe. I've got more sense.

"Obviously poisonous tarantulas scare most people"

Just thought I would inform everyone here.
Sorry if I seem like a 'Know-it-all'.

But all spiders are poisonous.
That is one thing they have to be to be a spider.

All spiders...
have poison,
have eight legs,
spin silk,
and have two body parts.

If they don't have all that, they are not spiders.
Such as scorpions, they have eight legs.
They are relatives of spiders.

Same thing with 'daddy long legs'
They are not spiders.
They have eight legs, but...
they are not posionous,
don't spin silk,
and only have one body part.
But once again, they are relatives.

Also...
All spiders are poisinous, but most of them are harmless to humans.
The poison is too weak.

You should be nice to spiders too.
They eat the other bugs that are gross.

There is one thing I haven't had for a long time now that also makes me uncomfortable, sleep paralasis.

You wake up fully consious and yet you can't move, you panic, you feel you can't breath either. Disturbingly I've had this in reverse, where you lie there trying to sleep, but you're fully awake, and then you feel your body shuting down for the night, the legs go first then up through the body and then the arms. Not nice.

I don't like any creepy crawly insects in general, but flying stinging bugs freak me out (bees, wasps etc) I run from them to this day and I am a grown man! LOL I must look pretty funny bouncing off of trees and parked cars trying to escape an untimely death at the hands of a deadly yellow-jacket
I think it stems from childhood when I was stung in the arch of my foot by a wasp I accidently stepped on at a swimming pool, and when I was viciously attacked by some giant fist sized bee that stung me on my calf as I ran for my life - my leg balooned up like Popeye's forearms and I had to spend the night in the infermary (at summer camp)

What a wimp

It is caused strongly by a complete and total disgust, as Fallout said. They are the foulest thing I can think of out of hand. Furthermore, their movement is simply horrific-- the way they twitch their legs-- and... urggh...

Easily confused i been trying to get my body to fall asleep and my mind to stay concious for ages but i aint been able to do it yet.

The reasons i want to do this is:

1)Astral projection.
2)Lucid dreaming.

Astral travel is when you use sleep to access the astral plain - i think its something to do with the spirit world - the other side - but i sceptical.

Lucid Dreams, however, I am not sceptical about. Basicaly its knowing you are asleep and making your dream anything you like and this I would love to do.

I've had a few Lucid dreams, one point of advice, don't tell anyone. If you realize you dreaming never tell a soul. If you do, all they'll do is say "huh?" and you'll wake up. At one point I was in a really deep sleep, were I was fully aware of everything, dream and otherwise (ussally while I'm asleep, things are a bit different, momories, history, that kinda stuff. While awake I can't remember much of the dream world, and while I'm asleep I can barely remember anything from reality). However these two 'guys' were running from me, so they active tried to shift the dream, you know when sudden things change in a dream (you along with it) but you never relize it, that's why they were doing. It took so much consitration to not forget that I woke up. I know they are very important though, I think they were the "physical" form of my night terror. There were three, but earlier in the dream I fought and kill one of them, what's more there was someone more powerful overseeing the fight, like a judge. But ever since I kiiled that guy I've never had that perticualar night terror again.

Personally I find it very reasuring that people really believe in such spitual matters, even with without scientific or religiuos proof.

Maybe so, maybe not . When lucid dreaming, your goals are very different from what they are in normal life. Don't expect to worry about tommorow's exams or your boss firing you when you're lucid dreaming.

it was blistering heat out. I have just been to the pool and went to the mall to chill with the conditioners. I noticed alot of kids were and adults were running about franticly. I noticed one of my class mates, grabbed him and asked him wats going on.
"back to school shopping, school starts tommoro"
I woke up almost parcticlly yelling and very sweaty. Ran got my flash light and checked the clander. 1 month till school, i was so releived.

but those are one of my stupid fears, fears that pull me out of wat my teacher calls my "comfort zones" things that i am sorta scared of are things that arent really physicall (e.g not like spiders, wich alot here are terified of) any one see Final Destination? I know i shouldnt get to hyped from wat I see in these movies but that would be creepy. Death stalking you 24/7, and never knowing when ur gona die?

Personnally, I'm scared of being alone my whole life. I have no chance of getting a girlfriend, my weirdness keeps me from ever getting a girlfriend, and when I'm pissed, I show it. Add all those factors in, and I will probably be alone my whole life.

It's not stalking us, it's waiting for us with open arms. You notice how it rarely turns anyone away when they decide to join him?

Two things that scare me are:

Randi's whole forum style (those needles and doctors or whatever omg, I look behind myself everytime I see it), and fallout's avatar

Okay so the last one was a lie, but randi's deal... omg.. I do not have night terror, sounds scary as hell, but after I watch a horror movie I will not sleep.. and then I will be afraid to sleep the next ngiht, this happens well over a week. I will not watch horror's anymore now.

I am also scared of bees and wasps... and yellowjackets. That type of stuff, it scares me to death (or close)..

Also, I have tried Astral Projection and Lucid Dreaming but it is HARD.. no success yet

Yeah, he was all like: "If you_hate_your_sister$=1 then goto Kill_Sister." Yeah... okay I was lying

[EDIT] Damn second page This was a reply to cattlerustler

Yes, but you dont spend 24/7 thinking about it, or you would get very jumpy indeed. I'm not afraid of death at all, but if you think about it for a while it is unnerving because it is unknown.

I would be unstoppable if I could just get started...

I agree, but my point was death is around the corner 24/7, however far off that corner is, regardless if you're thinking about it or not.

yucky topic anyway! LOL

I dont like to think about death, what happens after death, and what your sould does when you die. Never think about it when your right about to fall asleep though, you'll have nightmares that'll scare the $#!+ outta you.

@NWC Omega

Listen to me now if you never listen to anyone in your whole life.

If your mind works like mine, or you can at least reason things very rationally, you'll understand. There's a difference between smart and logic.
