Hey, I'm quite annoyed now, my internet is going ridulously slow, it takes at least 10 seconds for google to load up, and then it doesn't show search suggestions because it is so slow, I'm on a vista laptop, and my wireless strength is 'Poor', my router and laptop are where they always are.

Problems started two days ago, and I installed Vista service pack 2 today, any ideas why this could be happening?

^^
Not normal, I normally get about 3.24mb/s download on this test

Wow. That is Slooow. Even 3.24Mb...Do all people in England have slow internetz?

Only thing I can think of is to try reseting your router\modem...or maybe an upgrade to Verizon FIOS.

Yeah, megaBIT, not megabyte. And compared to what I am used to...

I love Verizon. They are giving me 10 more Mb per sec than we paid for...for both upload and download.

I know! I'm only supposed to be getting 5 Mb\sec, not 17...funny thing is, my friend, who has cable and gets about 15 Mb\sec down always has slightly better ping than me.

^Not bad, this is what I get in halls at University.

From long distances (Los Angeles):

My University's firewall stops me from doing a PingTest.

Your wireless would likely be the culprit - at my other home, I get poor wireless signals in one part of the house (my bedroom ) and it can mean an awfully slow internet connection.

Weirdly good upload speed here in Durham Uni

EDIT:

I retested, as I remembered they allocate a max. bandwidth per room (and I was downloading a file at the same time with the previous test)

A bit better, at least:

I didn't know that changing the DNS could have such a big effect. How much of a difference did it make?

Yeah, we upgraded from Verizon DSL not too long ago. What a difference.

It upped my ping score from a D to an A. I don't know how involved the DNS is in routing the connection but it seemed to make a big difference.

Newcastle UK I'm actually on Virgin Media, and have been for about two years now, but it still says Telewest, I think it's something to do with virgin replacing telewest...

Hmm...I tried changing mine to Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and it seems to have slowed me down by about .75 Megabit\sec, unless that is coincidental. Does anyone remember the name of Google's DNS scanner that finds the best DNS for your computer?

O.k. Tell me how in the world I can get my internet to be at least half as fast as that.
What is this fiberoptics thing and where to get it?

Well I dunno, I guess it depends on where you live. In Sweden they've made fibreoptic internet available in most big cities. I had the option to choose from 100 mbit down and 100 mbit up or 100 mbit down and 10 mbit up. Since i hardly upload anything i chose the 100 mbit down and 10 mbit up option, although I do get 60 mbit up for some reason >_>

Fibre is a type of cable which uses light( Yes light!) to transfer information. We all know how fast light is now dont we!, thats why it is so fast, im not sure how you can get it General Jackson your best bet is to check all the providers that can provide internet to you. I dont live in America but im pretty sure Verizon fios is fibre.

I'm paying $70 USD a month for my internet, and as you can see I'm in the bottom 5 or so on this topic.

Thats an insanely low price for those insanely high speeds!

It costs about $70 USD a month for FIOS internet\phone where I live.

Wow, sorry to bump, getting real slow connection again, and I'm desperate to pin this one on vista, ive restored my router to factory settings, and I'm getting a 'good' connection. However, that is not reflected here... any ideas? Using Vista service pack 2

Try plugging your laptop into your network with an ethernet cable before running your next test.

I wouldn't just blame it all on Vista without running proper tests. There really is no definite way of knowing whats causing it though. It could even be your ISP leeching your internet...

Ok, It's back to a usable speed now, not quite amazing though, I will run the tests when I get time. Thanks

Ok, After reading your post, I went downstairs, unplugged the router and modem, and plugged everything back in properly, I moved the router to on top of a desk, went back upstairs and tested... it seems to be fixed

Eek. It's pretty slow compared to other peoples (sometimes it goes down to 0.3Mb/sec dl and 0.01Mb/sec upload)

EDIT: Ping test:

It was a "B" yesterday lol
