I'm used to Google querying my spelling on a search item (usually because I've accidentally misspelt something) but today's offering was weird.

I searched for should bark be removed from firewood. Google's response was to suggest:

Did you mean to search for should barack be removed from firewood.

Perhaps our US forum members could cast light on this weird suggestion?

xD that is random.

Oh and bark doesn't need to be removed from firewood as long as it's not like peeling off/wet/mouldy.

But even then all it'll do is smell more and make more smoke.

At least it didn't suggest "should barack be removed from torchwood."

There's something in this room that makes you can't speak well.

One from the IT Crowd:

"If you type Google into Google you will actually break the internet"

For "why", the top I got was, "why do men have nipples?" Interesting question, I'm surprised I've never explored why.

I typed in why and second was "why are black people so ugly?"
then eighth was "why are people racist?"
xD

There's a lot of "why is [animal] going extinct?"

I still haven't found a google whack

"Why are canadians so proud of their country?"
hahaha

"why are car bodies not made from magnesium?"
"why is my poop green?"
"why do dogs eat grass?"
"why does my eye twitch?"

Seriously, has ralph wiggum been online?

In the womb, all humans "start off" as female. Testosterone is what essentially turns you from a female into a male in the womb.
I looked it up years ago.

why does my eye twitch?"

Fun fact - Everyone's eyes move back and forth rapidly (without our knowing). The human eye would not be able to see anything if it was looking at a fixed "scene". So when in Jurassic Park, they say "The T-Rex's vision is based on movement", you can think "as is ours".

The T-Rex simply lacks these micro "twitches", that allows us to see stationary objects.

Again.... I don't know how I know this. I watch a lot of Documentaries!

Oh I thought the T-rex's vision was based on it's brain capacity. - So something like the velociraptor (or us) can identify prey as something that's got eyes and flesh for example. Whereas a t-rex would just see trees the same as people until people moved. - Mind you, that would mean the t-rex would be attacking trees every time the wind blew... xD

I think when people say their eyes are twitching, they're generally referring to their eyelid rather than their actual eye Dunno whether you've experienced it, but a twitchy eyelid is the most infuriating thing ever

I can imagine. Although my eyes "leak" all the time. I have blocked tear ducts, so when the eyes clean themselves the water doesn't drain away through the ducts, which gives the illusion that I've started to cry.

Although that can be incredibly irritating as more water is secreted when walking around outside (as the eyes must dry out quicker), I can hardly see where I'm going! But it must be such an odd site for a man to be walking around Tescos, tears rolling down his face.

It might well be, but I know if it weren't for the micro "twitches", that we wouldn't be able to see anything (unless we started moving our head or eyes)

They should include that in Jurassic Park 4, just a T-Rex in the background chomping away on a tree.

Fun fact: When your eyes water when exposed to chopped onions, it is because your eyes are literally burning. Not stinging, but actually being BURNED by acid.
Onions are very high in amino acid sulphoxides, which causes them to release sulphenic acids when cut or bitten into. The sulphenic acids are then converted to syn-propanethial-S-oxide by various enzymes and released into the air.
Like most acids, syn-propanethial-S-oxide damages flesh by drawing all of the moister out of it, which generates heat and kills cells. When the acidic fumes hit your eyes, the acid creates the stinging sensation and your eyes start to water to dilute the acid and rinse it out.

So what if I talk to myself? Its the only way i can have an intelligent conversation around here.

Why is it scientific explanations are always so much more frightening?...I'm never chopping onions again! Boo hoo hoo!

To think I was going to put onions in my Fajita tonight...sigh...life is full of disappoints, at least that's what my mother said the day I was born.

The one after that brought back memories of a long train journey with my then young son. At some point he asked in a loud voice: "Daddy, why is the sky blue?". The previously noisy compartment immediately went quiet while I mumbled some incoherent reply. This was quickly followed by "What makes the rain?". I finally managed to divert my son from these searching questions by pointing to some rabbits in a field. The compartment thankfully then lost interest.

If I ever get reincarnated in the same situation I'll make sure I've got my laptop or whatever so I can do a quick Google search for such awkward questions.

Perhaps some of the fun and uncertainty of life will be lost?

light is refracted in the atmosphere. Blue light is refracted at a different angle than the red light. This also explains the sunset being red. What I really want to know is why are rainbows circular???

[edit]
wait, googled it. The water droplets reflect the sunlight at a certain angle, so the only water droplets that refract the sunlight directly towards our eyes are the ones lying in a circle from our field of view.

[edit2]
even more intriguing, why is water blue?

eh? They totally are circular! Go outside with a hose on a sunny day, and put your finger over the nozzle so that the water comes out in a spray. There'll probably be a rainbow if the suns right, and it will be circular, definitely not parabolic. Why would it be parabolic anyways?

Also, looked it up, water is blue because it's colored that way (absorbs red). simple as that I guess.

You're right,
Quote: "The angular distributions of protons channeled in a tilted 111 Si very thin crystal together with the corresponding rainbow patterns are considered. The proton energy is 10 MeV while the crystal thickness is 121.1 nm, corresponding to the reduced crystal thickness of 0.15. The tilt angle of the crystal is varied from zero up to the critical angle for channeling. The angular distributions were obtained using the numerical solution of the proton equations of motion and the computer simulation method. The rainbow lines were determined by applying the theory of crystal rainbows. The analysis has shown that the evolution of the angular distribution with the tilt angle can be fully explained by the evolution of the crystal rainbow. We have discovered that the crystal rainbow effect turns into the well-know doughnut effect in ion channeling for the larger values of the tilt angle. The interior of the doughnut is the analogue of the Alexander's dark band, which occurs in between the primary and secondary meteorological rainbows."

It's all there.

that's talking about a beam of protons hitting a silicon wafer. I think that's just talking about a rainbow analogous to a standard "meteorological" one.

That was just for tests, to explain it's natural shape. A water droplet is usually about a nm or µm thick, so the tests were close to natural rainbows.

i've been exhausted to the point that, even with my eyes open, nothing registers. ie, i can't see. maybe this answers that?

the eyelid twitching i had a lot of over the last couple months. was driving me insane as they twitched even as i was trying to fall asleep. i thought, "well, it's about time i need glasses". after thorough testing, it appears my eyes are fine. the twitching coincided with my return to work and a couple particularly windy weeks (i work ouside) which followed 3 weeks vacation where i spent a lot of time at the computer so i'm writing it off to that & the wind. oh, and thraxas, if you should get the idea of putting ice packs on your eyes (like i did), don't leave them on for very long
