For me, Doom 3 is a game I will always remember for those little touches you don't see in many games. My favorite is when you pick up your PDA at the begin of the game, the guy gives you an assignment to go see Sergeant Kelly. If you look at the screen he's using you can see whats being typed on the screen word for word. It reads:

New Arrival Processing - New Report:

"I have processed all incoming personnel from flight 4409. PDA was issued to the marine on board and I sent him directly to Marine Command at Sergeant Kelly's request. The other 2 UAC reps were sent to the conference room at Betruger's request."

Supplemental:

"I would also like to add that this new transfer is exceedingly rude. He has hovered over me reading everything I type. STOP IT"

It's stuff like this that really pulls me into a game.

Have you guy's encountered stuff like things?

I always liked the little touches in IK+, trousers falling down, worm walks across the screen, spider dropping down... lots of little things in such an awesome game just made it more 'loved'. When I see little touches like that, it makes me think that the developer put a bit more effort in. Often though it's by accident, like in Oblivion you can have goblins chase you all over the game world by nabbing one of their staff things, there's lots of weird stuff in that game if your bored enough.

I always try and add something pointless to a game. Something that people might not even notice, it's not all about debugging - sometimes even the bugs are the most entertaining part, especially with enemy characters. I mean, the first time an AI character kills the player, well you just want to give it a hug! - it's usually been through hell to get there. Making AI years ago for a FPS game was damn hilarious, having tough terrorist looking guys determined to shoot you in the left toe is pretty funny.

I think game development would be pretty boring if you weren't allowed to have a little fun, add a bit of personality here and there - it'd be pretty dull to be too good at it as well, you'd miss all the shenanigans.

I suppose it's just an iterative process. Think about it, start with something extremely simple (but extremely expandable), play it, and ask yourself how it could be improved, then try it again, ask yourself the same question, ad nauseum.

I guess after a few rounds of that, you will probably notice some big improvements.

Area 51 on xbox, When you get the scanner at the start, you scan personal on the base and they have some weird stuff on them, Diapers XXL condoms, Broken compass, ciggies, pens, shaving cream.

I laughed alot at that when i started.

I remember doing that, it's even funnier if you grab all the clan staffs, and wait on the bridge to the citadel. Wait long enough and a army of goblins come flying down the bridge.
