Hey dudes,

I'm wondering, is there a way of using my laptop display as a monitor for my XBox 360? I have a 50hz SDTV, so the image quality isn't great, but my laptop display is 1080p HD, so naturally, as a whore, 1080p HD would be much nicer to play on.

My laptop has a HDMI port for output, but having an output going into an output is an obvious fail, but wishful thinking has me wondering, is there a way around it, without forking out too much cash? (or using much technical knowledge )

Cheers.

Not really, I mean there's probably USB video capture devices, but they wouldn't be HD, and I'm sure it would lag as well.

Maybe it would be worth picking up a cheap monitor just for the 360, a CRT would do the trick as well, you'd have much sharper image quality even on a CRT.

I'm strapped for cash, so I was looking for the cheapest solution, a bit of research has found some USB video capture stuff, EasyCap only works with PAL-50 and NTSC, considering most games are PAL-60, it's useless here. And Dazzle, which has software with it that can record PAL-60, but with a few settings changed, though it seems all you get is a tiny box. People seem to be only using Dazzle for recording.

Some things from my google search say there's a HD solution, yet nothing actually says what it is.

If there isn't one, no biggy. A CRT monitor would take up too much space for me as well.

Cheers

a search revealed the adaptec gamebridge would be your best bet. i think they're no longer made but ebay had a few (and some forums say you can find them much cheaper than the current 45-90$ on ebay). from what i read, it would be a better solution vs the dazzle option based solely on the software it comes with. my dazzle software (pinnacle) won't let me set a time to start recording so i can use it like a dvr whereas, from what i read, the gamebridge software does. anyway, might be worth a shot, especially if you can find it cheap.

btw pinnacle released a new version of the recording software that allows you to maximize/resize the picture so the "tiny picture" is no longer an issue (now if they would add that timer, i'd be elated ). also, lemme add, i said "based solely on the software", but i also saw mention of the gamebridge not affected gameplay, causing lag, etc. i've never tried with my dazzle but others who've done what you're trying to do say the gamebridge is good, so...

With the other release of Pinnacle not have the Tiny Picture problem anymore would be handy. Cheapest I've found it is £30.

From further searching it seems it's possible to get PAL-60 with EasyCap, either with alternative software like Debut Video Capture (which I've already Got installed for recording desktop and webcam) or making a few setting changes. This is good because Amazon is selling it for £10.

Also, if you've got Dazzle and you want a timer, perhaps grab Debut Video Capture by NCH Software. It's a freebie.

Gamebridge seems also to be a cheap solution, though it sounds a bit more difficult to get a hold of.

Unless somebody starts yelling and raving "no no no!" then I think I'll give EasyCap a shot.

Not too bad video quality either:

I think you're flogging a dead horse, to be honest mate. I know whipping things is your cup of tea, but this is one nag that won't get up.

I recommend plugging your 360 directly into your retinas, and go from there.

I'm afraid my retinas neither have a HDMI or Component input, unless you can recommend a decent converter?

Look, I gave you a brilliant idea! It's up to you to figure it out. I can't do all the work!!

Fine, I'll head into town, nab a HDMI cable and see what I can do.

Yeh, for god sake Sepp, put some effort in for once!

I've always fancied recording some gaming vids, but I've yet to find a decent way to record HD devices that will:

A. Not take up huge amounts of space with raw media files
B. Allow me to play in 1080p and "record" in 720p (which kind of links with point A, I would record in 1080p if I had the HDD capacity)

Basically I would need something that took a 1080p source and decreased the resolution on the fly.

Post your results! I'm working with a TV from the 70's here, so I haven't even bothered trying to hook up any current-gen consoles.

I will, I'll probably order it Monday (we have to inform our Halls manager when we're ordering packages to be delivered)
