Hey, I've been round a year or so now, but I still don't understand why the forums are referred to as Apollo?

I think Apollo is the forum software, developed by...Richard Davey? Not quite sure, but I'm fairly certain it was developed by TGC, and is unique to these forums.

Just like AndrewT said - It's the name of the forum software I wrote for TGC back in.. hell.. a long time ago. 2002? Something like that.

Indeed, it's forum software. I'm not entirely sure what it's written in, I would like to say ASP or ASP.NET, but there are a few things I would probably add to it to make it better if I were you, Richard. For starters, add a quick-quote button.

What's so hard about highlighting the text you want quoted and hitting the quote button?

It doesn't tell you who you're quoting or where the post is, this is quite a basic and useful feature. Though I personally find the most annoying issue with the forum post field is how it scrolls to the top whenever you click any of the buttons(in FF), this is exceptionally annoying when you've written a long post and insert something in the middle of the post as it takes added time to find the section you were editing again.

Sweet. I didn't know you could do that. I've always copy+pasted into this window, highlighted, then hit quote! Two keyboard combo presses and a few mouse clicks saved!

Judging by some of the error page URLs / the text they show, I'm thinking it's just plain old PHP

Well, no offense to Richard, this forum software is in major need of some modern features. SMF is currently the most stable forum software that is free, and has everything you could think of.

And Thraxas, in my experience on the web, and owning sites of my own, convenience is everything. Users don't want to have to highlight, paste, or do whatever, they want to click a button, and have things ready. Just because you don't see a problem with it, some of us might not like having to go through extra tasks to achieve what we want.

I prefer this over SMF, whilst SMF has more features, I feel this forum is superior in the way it's structured and I prefer using it. I think SMF could be better laid out - for a start it's clunky with its buttons.

If Rich wanted to, he probably could add the extra features and release the forum software, but I don't see a required demand for extra features.

The benefit of having a customized forum is less spam bots. vBulletin and other popular ones attract too many bots that know how to easily bypass captcha(a terrible invention) and spam all over the forum.

It's not really a terrible invention considering it has taken years for spammers to be able to reliably and quickly skip/spoof CAPTCHAs

Oh yes, I forgot, you're working your way towards usurping Rich. Cool to see new features gradually seeping in.

I haven't touched the code on this forum for nearly 4 years now - feature requests should not be directed at me

The advantages this forum has over a generic off the shelf one is simply the vast array of moderator tools built in. It evolved around the style of community here - a process that took several years, but settled down quite nicely.

There are loads of things I wanted to add to it, but just never did. Personally I would probably start it all from scratch if I did it again - refined db structure, php5 to the core and jQuery. But hey.. that's someone elses job now

It would be stupid to make it public. The forums are coded into TGC's site anyway, so it would require more work to modify them to be independent than it would be to make a new version.

I'm not working on it in any other terms than trying to fix and add a few things here and there (like the syntax hiliting). Rich did a good job on the codebase from what I've seen of the code

@Profit - Considering you have been warned multiple times about following AndrewT around the forum and posting stupid messages, either mocking him or repeating what he has said. I am banning you for the length of time you have been "harassing" him.

See you in 4 months.

I'm not actually sure that would be a good thing, some people have different sigs for different occasions and it would make sense for them to stay after the post.

I think the only thing these forums need is a tag to embed youtube videos...

I agree with Mad Nightmare. Embedding youtube videos for WIPs or Full games would be good but I have a feeling it would just be abused in Geek Culture, with a new thread popping up every 2 mins "ZOMG check out this awesome video. LMAO"
