Ok here goes, I'm about to replace my pc for a laptop but am unsure what to get, obviously I'll be using it for some 3d work and DarkBasic games.
The main things I need to know are, which processor to go for and do I need a dedicated graphics card.
I was thinking of dual core 2 but which model ?
If I do need a graphics card should it be ATI or NVIDIA and again which model would suit me best.
My current pc is quite dated now but has served me well...
Athlon 1 gig
256 ram
NVIDIA GeForce 4 mx 440 64mb
How do you guys get on with laptop/DarkBasic combo
Many thanks

If you have the money I'd recommend an Alienware M17X.
If you don't want to spend 3.5*10³ USD, then an HP pavillion seems like what you should go for.

I agree.

I have an HP pavilion that I bought just a little over two years ago now, and the left screen joint...or whatever makes it fold up is broken, the battery doesn't last more then 8 minutes(literally), I have to keep it plugged in. Also ive had to replace the charger once as well.

Hp makes great desktops in my experience though.

newegg.com and user reviews if you're in the USA.

I have a $750 laptop from newegg. It works great. For a lil graphics benchmark, it can play Crysis at medium/high settings, with one or two on ultra high. No lag in games that aren't crappy ports from a console.

important specs:
NVidia GeForce 9600 GT 512mb
intel centrino dual core processor (2.6ish GHZ i think?)
4 mb of RAM (3 mb usable)
300-and-somethin gig HDD
This
is the laptop that i bought for $750 with a $50 rebate. There were a couple things bad about this laptop. Crappy wireless adapter meant i had to buy an external one (which, on an unrelated note, broke). Weird and noisy CD drive means I can barely put a cd in without worrying it'll scratch the disk. Company that assembles/makes it is kind of a scam. I filled out the rebate form correctly, tried to go back and edit one field on the previous page, and was locked out and denied a rebate, and was met with no response to my e-mail to customer service.

What I'm getting at is that MSI may have some (or a) good laptops, but expect corporate jerks.

Anyways, definitely newegg if you live in the USA, and read the comments on products.

also, you can program on just about anything, to run the programs you need equipment to run games, so a graphics card that's not outdated and a mid-range processor should be just fine.

Get an Asus G60 laptop, seriously you need to look no further.

It's down to $899 now. You get a dual core processor, and the best part is the graphics - an Nvidia GTX260M. High-end graphics on a laptop for under $1000. 4 gigs of RAM and a speedy 7200RPM drive.

This is the best laptop I've ever owned, and one that I can do serious work on as a desktop replacement with no compromises.

And if you want to spend a bit more you can upgrade the CPU to a corei7.

Could you take a look at this and tell me if this is up to the job, To me the spec and price look good but the only prob I can see is in the graphics card department, ideally I dont want to spend more than £400 to £450

It can't handle many new games, the processor only has 2mb cache, and it has a chipset. You will need to install an OS, as it says that it doesn't come with one. Make sure that if you get it, and you use a router, you aren't using a wireless-N. This only supports b/g. If you are fine with all of that, then you can get it.

You could always buy an iPad

ASUS K70 Series K70IC-X1 - $800
17" screen
4GB ram
320GB HD (5400rpm)
Nvidia GeForce GT 220M (1GB)
C2D T6600 2.2GHz
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

SONY VAIO FW Series VGN-FW590FVH - $950
16.4" screen
4GB DDR2
500GB HD (5400RPM)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (1GB)
C2D P8700 (2.53GHz)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Was there a particular price range you wanted to stay within?

Do you really need a laptop?
£400 in desktop terms would get you a
AMD Athlon II X4 620 (2.6Ghz Quad)
ATI HD4670
4GB RAM
22inch Screen
500GB HD

...which would be much higher performance than that ebuyer budget one

Its a space issue mainly, I only have a small house and for various reasons (the missus) I need to downsize my computing, my pc's a bit old hat now anyway (my gfx card isnt up to running DBPro) and I like the idea of some new tech so am taking the plunge.
I just want to make sure that the laptop I choose is equivalent or a step up from my pc, I know the ram and cpu will be but will I really need to spend more to get better 3d graphics, the GF4 mx440 only has 64mb.

Sony VAIO is the way to go.Dont go buy a HP laptop,I have one and pretty much sucks, the cooling system is horrible.ASUS has some nice ones too.

Any laptop you can buy these days outruns your pc by far,my oldest computer(8 years old) is 2x better than yours so yes,you are quite behind.

It used to be. It's not any more; Sony seem to have switched to making beautiful "designer" machines with components intended to fail. That's my experience, anyway, given that two of the three people I know who bought them had a failure two or three months after the warranty ran out. Toshiba, Panasonic, Asus, Levono(sp?).

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

I also don't recommend VAIOs, Probably an Asus, like others have said.

I have upped my price range and I'm looking at these 2 at the min, what do you think of the spec/price ? any comments, could I get a more powerful one (graphics as well as processor)for the same or less money and if so where ?
Dell Studio 15 (N0055803) @ £529
Samsung R580 @ £525
Ive put a similar post in another thread, hope thats ok, want to get plenty of opinions

Also I've read that windows 7 32bit cant access more than 3 gig of mem so is it better to go for 64bit ?
