I just came up with this, I don't know if anyone has this or not. But wouldn't it be great if there were tabs in Windows Explorer such as the ones for Internet Explorer? That would take down SOO much clutter on my task bar. What do you guys think?

Dude, awesome idea. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't thought this up...

Or Apple, to be honest. It can get so cluttered if you've got say 6 folders all in list view. Especially as their minimising and window switching solutions involve using shrunken windows which are indistinguishable until you mouseover and read the label.

Athlon64 2.7gHz->OC 3.9gHz, 31C, MSi 9500GT->OC 1gHz core/2gHz memory, 48C, 4Gb DDR2 667, 500Gb Seagate + 80Gb Maxtor + 40Gb Maxtor = 620Gb, XP Home

There is a program called QT Tab or something like that, it will add this functionality to Windows Explorer.

But yeah, I don't like installing those type of apps, they always seem to make windows explorer unstable. It seems like this would be a no brainer for MS to add this functionality in themselves...

Oh my God. Suggest it, now, to Microsoft, and hopefully they'll add it into a service pack, or in Windows 8 (assuming that'll be the name of the next Windows) as a totally new feature.

Seriously. I am also utterly shocked neither Apple or MS haven't thought of this. And they call themselves revolutionaries! Those liars.

Alright, I will suggest to them. I was using Chrome and was browsing through tons of open folders and was like, "Why don't they tab file browsing?".

I've never thought of having tabs in Explorer, never needed them. The only time I needed more than one open I was moving files, in which case it's easier to have multiple windows rather than tabs.

As for Apple, I really hate their file explorer. There's a program out there for Apple that acts more like Windows Explorer, but it's not free.

Welcome to GNOME about 2 years ago

And there is also a plugin/replacement for the Finder on OS X which does this

Do you need admin rights to install it?

Nope - just a normal app. It's more a replacement that behaves the same, and you can config it to close the normal Finder on startup. It's called PathFinder

Isn't that what windows 7's task bars managed to do though?

Or am I thinking of the wrong kinda thing?

Just looked into PathFinder, DavidR, hoping it'd correct a wide range of serious deficiences in Finder, and it does. Stuff like merging folders, cut/paste. Shame it isn't free, eh...?

Sounds like an interesting idea. But I still think I prefer separate windows.

There's nothing wrong with having the option though!
